Wow...that was epic and kinda lucky! Was cool to catch up and see the Camry in the flesh at AJD today. It was funny watching the perplexed looks on some people's faces!

Lucky no one's face was over that cap, never seen that one before. I think we know now why it was parked... Would be interesting before the engine goes for scrap for a quick tear down to see how bad it really is in there.

When it fires in the exhaust timing is too late, and when it shoots from carb or strugles to turn over the timing is too early. It is normal that the fuel mixes with the oil if it wont start (fuel clears the cylinders from oil so the rings wont seal good) and i am pretty sure that the explosion did not go through from pistons side bc it is hard to get past valves, so it has gone through oilchanels in the block.
When i put a dizzy in i check that nr1 is tdc from timing marks and check that the dizzy points to nr1 piston. Its hard to get it running while adjusting so easy to start from close to right timing, love your videos keep up the good work 😁 sorry bad english, i am glad that you post allso the fail parts that all can learn and se even if you fail it doesnt mean that the project is over.

Do a compression test on each cylinder

I see noboddy is commenting for this so..
real soloution is... Pull dizzy out.. Take the plastic timing cap off the top of the gearbox theres a arrow pointing down on the metal threads that hold that cap. Turn harmonic balancer till arrow meets a O on the flywheel in gearbox hole.. (or pull spark plug number 1 and turn motor till piston 1 is rocking at the top of the cylinder). Dizzy has a fine little line mark on the lip where the cap meets the metal of the dizzy (so take dizzy cap off). Line should point somewhere between the head and the timing hole of the gearbox (dizzy rotor should also point at this line when inserted)... Might have to turn a little flat head looking shaft a few times (its the oil pump shaft) inside the hole that holds the dizzy with a long nose plier to get the dizzy pointing between the head and timing hole. From there It will start

Interesting, however the dizzy can only be installed in 2 ways, we tried either way and also spun the dizzy to either extreme and everywhere in between, theoretically trying all of the options.. i think
I would try what you have suggested but taylor has taken his parts home again, thankyou for the info :)

I have a 1978 model. The GLD badge were originally n/a 1.5 diesel & later models 1.6 diesel.
Engine code CK for the 1.5 &
Jp for the 1.6 later models.
Very economic motors. Sort of bulletproof..
I'm sure that 1.6 petrol/gasoline was not part of the package lol..
Btw the cylinder head you have there if it is a 1.6 should have solid lifters with shims... Can be ported, polished with double valve springs and bigger valves and a 268° degree camshaft combined with a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold (can be put on a 1.8 or 2l block) will scare the majority of modern cars
