  • We met up with former MTV VJ for Headbangers Ball Riki Rachtman who gave us the REAL DIRT on his scene in Hollywood during those glorious 80s. Riki describes how he started his famous club "The Cathouse", his friendships with some of the most notorious rock stars like Axl Rose and Tamie Downe. He also offers his opinion on grunge vs metal. Super fun interview. We had a great time hanging with Riki. Some fascinating stuff here. Next week we give you Tony Harnell from TNT. Remember to subscribe and stay tuned only on 80s MRB!

I can't get enough of this channel. The hair metal bands were the sound track of my youth during the eighties. Friday nights after school I would be cruising around the small town where I grew up. While searching for the next party; bands like GnR, Honeymoon Suite, Skid Row, Night Ranger, Faster Pussycat, the list goes on and on, were in constant rotation in my car's cassette player. Nobody really knows what's about to blow up, ever. You can hope, and try to guess, but I've seen too many bands that were fantastic, and packed people in, that went nowhere. For a million different reasons. It's too easy to say it in some documentary 35 years later.

The fact of the matter is that it wasn't "The Metal Scene". It was a reiteration of Glam Rock with bands exploiting some cliché riffs / licks & tones that early Metal bands introduced. By the time that scene took off, real Metal evolved with Thrash, Death & Speed. Ultimately, when Glam killed itself through the oversaturation provided by the record labels, real metal never died and was still kicking in the underground. Imho, if it weren't for bands like Danzig, Faith No More, Suicidal Tendencies and a few others, I don't think people would've been as open to Nirvana, AIC, etc...

When Nirvana first hit I just looked at them as a new rock band with a great record. Towards the end of the scence the record companies had worked every possible angle of Metal and it was really kind of cheesy with songs such as cherry pie (which even warrant hated). people were just ready for something new. In the end it was a great time like no other that just ran its course. I feel extermely lucky to have been a part of it!

I was pissed, but I got warmed up to RIKI pretty fast, especially when THE METAL YEARS came out on VHS and you could get it at Blockbuster. I learnt of so much great music from that show that I doubt I'd know much of if not for that show. I especially loved it when they would do the block of DEATH METAL. And YES they did play Nelson, I remember stopping my VHS so it wouldn't record them again. One tape with them was enough. One of my favorite moments in the show was when I was introduced to KYUSS!!!

Kids today who discover "classic" rock bands from the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's have never known the feeling of anticipation for their favorite band's new release or ever had to wait for their favorite song to come on the radio and record it with a crappy cassette recorder to listen to whenever they pleased. Music had filters back then (DJ's, radio station program directors, record company execs, A&R people, etc.) who only let certain artists to flourish and what we got was what we got. Today, we're awash in music. There are no gatekeepers who decide what the general public hears. That's a good thing and a bad thing. Good for artists, bad for music fans who have to sift through lots and lots of bad music just to find a diamond in the rough. Another sad fact is there won't be any more superstars like Nirvana or Guns-N-Roses any longer. They were mega acts because the record companies made sure they'd capture every last red cent they could before Napster, Bearshare and Limewire put them all out of a job.

The internet killed Rock n Roll bands by making music free .
It makes no sense for a recording company to sign a contract for 4-6 band members . There's simply not enough money to share due to the absence of album sales . The only Rock/metal bands that are still around were already established 20+ years ago and they are aging fast.
This is why music is mainly a pretty faced solo artists these days , whether it's, rap , country or pop.

I have to disagree. The internet killed a lot of album sales, absolutely. What’s left were those bands that can actually put on a show. A band that can actually transport an audience by their craft, alone. Those are the bands that survive. Also, of course, are the industry darlings, coming and going, then fighting for relevance again with an army of PR. Whatever. If you can play you can stay. Those are the people who deserve our attention and $$$ anyway. Touring IS worth it. Playing IS the biggest part of what musicians do, imho.

@@MrJubal1975 you have to become relevant before people buy tickets to a show. Again producers are not going to gamble and sign a new 5 to 6 man band these days , there's no money in it.
