  • Can I Donate Colored Hair | Wigs for Kids FAQs
Welcome to Wigs for Kids, where we receive countless questions from people who generously want to donate their hair to change a child's life. One common question we often get is, "Do you accept color treated hair?" We understand the desire to contribute, but the answer to this particular question is no, and we want to explain why.
When creating beautiful hairpieces for children, we use virgin hair. This hair has not undergone any chemical treatments, such as dyeing, and it possesses essential qualities that are crucial for our wigs. If we were to accept human hair that has been dyed, it would lead to certain issues.
One significant problem is "inversion." Inversion occurs when the hair cuticle, which has been treated with color, reacts to body heat and causes the hair on the outside to rise, leading to bald spots on the top of the hairpiece. Additionally, this inversion creates discomfort for the child, as the colored hairs get tangled on the inside.
Furthermore, colored hair can cause inversion into the wig's base, creating knots that are impossible to comb out. This greatly hinders our wig-making process, and we meticulously assess each hair donation to ensure it meets our requirements.
Our goal is to provide children with hair systems that are beautifully smooth, natural-looking, and comfortable inside out. This is achievable with virgin hair, as seen in the hairpieces we create. Using colored hair could lead to significant problems for the child wearing the wig, especially in rainy weather or during shampooing.
While we do not accept colored hair, we are always eager to receive donations of beautiful virgin hair. Length is essential too, as 80% of our recipients are little girls who desire long hair similar to their friends. Longer hair donations make a significant difference in helping these children feel like themselves and live a beautiful life inside and out.
If you are considering donating your hair, we encourage you to wait and grow your hair to its longest length, take good care of it, shampoo and condition it, and then follow our video guide on how to properly cut and prepare your ponytails for donation. Your contribution can make a tremendous impact on a child's life, allowing them to look and feel beautiful. Thank you for considering donating to Wigs for Kids and helping us change lives, one wig at a time.
