How lucky we are that inventors developed audio-visual recordings! We can't forget John Denver and others can behold him for the first time, despite his absence.
This version of St Annes Reel was arranged by David Mallet. John recorded several of Mallets songs in the late 70's including the "Garden Song" and "You Say That The Battle Is Over" wich are Mallet originals. I saw John play this in Portland Maine in 1980. David Mallet was a guest at theat concert. Wow, 31 years ago!
Boy , this song has some emotion in it . i SAW john Denver in concert in Edmonton in 1984 ... THERE CAN NOT POSSIBLY A BETTER CONCERT EVER PERFORMED ... E V E R !!!!!!!! mISS HIM A LOT

aspen1987.....St. Anne's Reel is an old tune from Canada.. It's played a lot in Ireland( and Scotland and England) It is written by a fiddler from the Quebec Village of St. Anne de beaupre, Canada....(By the way I am from New Brunswick, Canada....and I love John Denver.)
An other outstanding song by John Denver ... you are sadly missed... but what you music left us to remember you by... How ironic but my two favorite singers have the same initials .... John Denver and Judith Durham.... and they never got to sing together..... When I hear her sing Northern Lights I always think of John as it sound like something he would have written...
I guess they could do that up in Heaven, and that's where I would be if I saw that. :) John is my favorite American artist, and Tommy and Liam are my favorite Irish artists. Best Irish duo ever to step foot on stage IMO.
I have to tell you, I am from Colorado (right at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park) I spent this past Valentine's Day with my lady, in San Francisco. I woke up one morning on that trip with St Anne's Reel on my mind and in my head. BUT a good version was not really to be found on you tube. And here we are, what, 10 days later, and you have posted exactly what I was hoping for! Lovely video, even had the fiddle Hangin' on the Rack! You last shot of JD is probably one of my favs too!
@sebectec This one of my favourite songs. It is also a wonderful piece of poetry, evoking, for me, some great memories of when I was a sailor and fell into a fairly similar situation many years ago. Thank you, Dave!
I live in a town on fair Prince Edward Isle. ( Souris ) and this is a beautiful rendition. But by God she's cold out there tonight December can be like that here but a mug of rum a good wood stove and a fiddle played right can get most of us on our feet
i had the privilage to see John perform on the grounds of the Santa Ynez mission with the mountains in the background. Sadly, that was also the day he drove over to Lompoc and bought the plane that ultimately took his life
2:44-2:47 WOW! Rodeo tie-down calf roper John Denver on a mandolin!!! John Denver DOES not play mandolin, but at 2:44-2:47, WOW! John Denver on a mandolin! He does not play mandolin, I thought he only just played guitars, piano and fiddle, aren't those the only three musical instruments he ever just plays? How come he has a mandolin at 2:44-2:47, that's what surprises me?
This song always reminds me of that scene from "Coal Miner's Daughter" when Loretta Lynn's Momma starts doing her little dance jig, ha! This song always gets my feet tapping... yee haw!!

He was stranded in some tiny town on fair Prince Edward Isle, awaiting for a ship to come and find him A one-horse place, a friendly face, some coffee and a tiny trace of fiddling in the distance far behind him. A dime across the counter, then, a shy hello, a brand new friend. A walk along the street in the wintry weather. A yellow light, an open door, a welcome friend, there's room for more, And then they're standing there inside together. He said I've heard that tune before somewhere, but I can't remember when. Was it on some other friendly shore or did I hear it on the wind? Was it written on the sky above? I think I heard it from someone I love, but I never heard it sound so sweet since then Now his feet begin to tap, a little boy says I'll take your hat. He's caught up in the magic of her smile. And leap, the heart inside him went, and off across the floor he sent his clumsy body graceful as a child.

John Denver's songs have always been special to me. I love to listen to him sing The Ballad Of St. Ann's Reel . I once had a cassette with that, amoung others, on it, which I lost. I have never been able to find another Tape, CD, Album or anything with that song. Does anyone know where I might find it ?
@sebectec Mr. Mallett, I just came across a video of John performing your song live at the Aspen Music Festival with an orchestra conducted by Lee Holdridge. It was uploaded by MrASPENDENVER2 on Dec 30, 2011. If you search Ballad of St. Anne's Reel John Denver Live, you should find it. Enjoy!
He said there's magic in the fiddler's arm, there's magic in this town. There's magic in the dancers' feet and the way they put them down. People smiling everywhere, boots and ribbons, locks of hair, and laughter and old blue suits and Easter gowns. Now the sailor's gone, the room is bare, the old piano's sitting there, someone's hat's left hanging on the rack. And empty chairs, the wooden floor that feels the touch of shoes no more, awaiting for the dancers to come back. And the fiddle's in the closet of some daughter of the town. The strings are broke and the bow is gone and the cover's buttoned down. But sometimes on December nights, when the air is cold and the wind is right, There's a melody that passes through this town.
DUBLINERS VERSION OFF their album, not the youtube version, is hands down the best version by the best singer ever, but I am a fan of both of these legends who are sadly gone from this veil of tears...but still singing in heaven
I'm a big fan of John Denver, as well as a fan of the Dubliners and they both do a great version of this song. But all that said, I think my favorite version of this particular song is done by a group of young folks from Upper New York State called Basketlanding. And no bias here. I'm from Texas. I sure enjoyed this as well, though.
The only versions I like better are by a small band in Alexandria VA, that perform at Murphy's Pub and the Clancy Brothers. It is still almost a tie still with them.
Beatuiful version of this lovely song, but I dont think it's a patch on the North Sea Gas version.I'm thinking of the instrummental and video parts which are stunning. Check it out to see what I mean . Moylaw

Written by David Mallett !
oh my god i love this song and john denver singing it . it sounds so irish :) :) :)
Because it is an old traditional Irish song....
@@ralphnewbill6987 Actually the song is by an American - David Mallett, using the ST Annes Reel as a refrain, which is a Quebecois tune, not Irish.
Grew up listening to John Denver as a kid...always reminds me of those days

John recorded this song on his 1980 album, "Autograph". This is a great, lively rendition that makes me want to get up and do a jig.
I have autograph yet I have never heard this song.
It's actually a Reel but you can try to jig if you want! Musically they are two different rhythms.
Explain the reel/jig difference.@@alangiolma4278

If they ever make a movie about John's life, Jonathan Taylor Thomas needs to play John.
They made a movie back on the early 80? Mr Denver was played by Rob Low, Amy Irving was Annie, I believe. Beautiful movie.
Peace, John.

@sebectec Hi David, thanks for writing this great song. I have a partial video of John doing this song with a symphony orchestra. Are you interested?
