I watched her interview with Adrianne at CBC in Canada. She is one Filipino we can all be very proud of. Fearless, credible, ethical……. Thanks so much for doing what you do. Much appreciated. BTW, I bought the book here in Vancouver and it is a great book. For anyone who wants to hold the line for freedom, I suggest to buy her book as a Christmas gift to friends and family.

Filipinos are highly vulnerable to social media addiction, being hyper social beings and emotional people that always crave some type of belongingness -- being more collective in nature where freedom of having one's own thoughts is frowned upon. If only we can take a break from groupthink and learn to think for ourselves and not be pressured to join social media. This happened to me when a friend visited me in the States and asked me why I was not on Facebook all the time, as if I was the only one not on Facebook. This thinking puts a stigma on people who are not part of a group. I remember when people told me once in PH why I didn't know a certain celebrity and they instantly trolled me for my ignorance.
This is dangerous thinking when not being on trend, on point, on social media, you're considered uncool.
The positive thing is that once you belong, you're treated very well. You cannot be different, though.

A great interview. Filipinos who don't fully understand why Maria Ressa has many cases filed against her by the previous government and by some individuals, must watch this interview. Her situation is not new. It's also happening against credible, awarded journalists, worldwide.
Secondly, one must understand what social media has done to people participating/responding to comments in Facebook posts, etc. Technology in big data has become the fire host. It spreads anger, fear and hate. It has become addictive to people and that changes human behavior. The emergent behavior because of social technology is MOB BEHAVIOR. And that has polarized Filipinos: good vs bad, yellow/ pink vs. red/green, for instance.
In our case in the Philippines, the majority of people are the silent ones who don't know what's the truth anymore. In fact, free speech in social media has stifled free expression.
I will buy this book. Ressa is absolutely articulate. Thanks to Karen Davila who asked the great questions. Thank you, Ms. Karen Davila! Great job!
On a global scale in true democratic countries, cyber libel is decriminalized. This where the law on freedom of expression in our Bill of Rights in our Philippine constitution has become weaponized; that's why our outstanding journalists aren't vocal enough anymore to hold corrupt government officials accountable or else they'll be jailed or killed!

The point is all sorts of views should be out there. Even Ressa's view should only be one of the many. Any democratic government (the last time I checked the Philippines is still a democracy) should benefit from a social media that does not discriminate. Let the best arguments win. If your set of ideas is not represented then work harder to be heard. In the end, the most felt by the people should ultimately be entertained subject to the government's wisdom. Governing is delicate. Our leaders must be sensitive to the voice of the people whether it has basis in fact or none at all. However, To run around the world and suggest that the Philippines is a dictatorship is irresponsible.
On a legal note, Im sure Ressa will eventually be vindicated. But next time she should be fairer and more objective. The people need journalists like her. Our press is alive and vibrant. The people demand that the press must be free but at the same time it must be fair.It is too late to control the press. We are a people made and forged by a free press. But the free press should be more educated in global finance, international investment and economic competition. Their journalistic writing should be mindful of the government's grander strategy. It is advantageous for the philippines to have a free press. In general, this will strengthen us down the road. But once again, it is also the job of the press to inform our people about our relative position in the global stage and be constructive, too.

I am more offended with Duterte killing human beings without due process, disrespecting women, supported corruption. What did Duterte achieved? He did not even solve the traffic in Manila. He was actually weak because he cannot stand criticism. As a public servant in a democracy, journalism and opposition is a big part. It is nothing personal, it is about check and balances. He shot down a tv station because he is vindictive and insecure, at the expense of thousands of jobs, in the middle of pandemic. He seemed to Elbe able to do whatever he wants. This is because there was no opposition and the courts are weak. A statement that Philippines was a dictatorship during Duterte admin is arguable. Happy holidays.

@@tinatingson8564 happy holidays to you, too mam.
Almost 80%of the Filipinos will disagree with you. That's democracy for you. Duterte was a fine president. Great, in fact, but not perfect. Duterte allowed the exercise of free press, in general and resticted few in particular. To his mind , abs - cbn was an extension of the oligarchic control over the nation's body and mind. True or not, he still used legal means by not renewing the franchise. He was not like he sent the army to the abs cbn's doorstep and shutdown its operation. There's a subtle difference. Yes Duterte should have been more tolerant of criticism but that's not how he was built. It was his flaw as a president but he had other endearing qualities though.
By the way the court was not weak. It was their way of operating by being mindful of the realities on the ground then. Also, Duterte did a lot in terms of partly breaking the oligarchy and by starting big infrastructure projects. He did bad in some in fiscal management and in managing the debt and also he didn't do very well in foreign relations and this could be his biggest failure but his economic performance was not too bad, although it could have been better. On balance, Duterte understood, on fundamental levels, what it takes to make this nation tick. He overwhelmingly favored the ordinary Filipinos and the people felt that. And the Filipino people will be forever indebted to his efforts.

@@tinatingson8564sorry, but i don't totally agree. I did not vote for duterte but I saw some good things he did for the country. He was not a perfect leader. He made right and wrong decisions as a leader. Well, that is being human. However, he did what he thought were right as a president of the country. He did what needs to be done.Try to look beyond the negative things you saw. How did he handled the war in maguindanao? How did he boost the moral of the AFP and PNP,? how did he handled the pandemic?, the infrastructure projects he accomplished through out the Philippines despite the pandemic, the drug war tho it was very controversial. I've seen the good effect of it, there was order and safety among urban poor barangays. I knew it because I worked in an urban poor community. The ayudas and the free transportation they provided for the filipinos, even the price control of commodities during the pandemic. The ntf-elcac was an effective program to end local communist's activities and maybe many more. His government was not perfect but he knew his priorities and what needs to be done. 80% of Filipinos are thankful of him. For your information it's the congress who shut down abs-cbn not Duterte but it happened during his presidency. Abs-cbn has lots of violations which up to now they have not settled. 🙄🤔
