All I can say as a Hammarby supporter is that if you give Marti the right enviorment to focus on his playing style you got a great coach on your team. Just look at the diffrence Hammarby played 2022 compared to the second part of Allsvenskan(2023), specially after the Confrence League game, away against Twente FC. the season 2022 and first half of 2023 we played 4-3-3. but the second half of the 2023 season he understood that we couldn't play that system because of the type of players we had in our squad. So we started to play a 3-5-2 system and which meant that our gameplan got much more simple and staright forward for the players. But i still think that the 2022 season of Hammarby is one of the best tactical season we ever had in our club and of course the quality of the players helped alot. So if you want to examine Martis type of football, the year of 2022 in Hammarby is a really good measuerment of what he can do if he have the right quality of players!
    Best of luck for QPR

  • @jdog14976
    @jdog14976 Před 7 měsíci +8

One of the biggest failures of the Ainsworth era is the way that his style of play tanked the value of the best players on this team. Under Beale, Willock was the best player in the Championship and probably would have sold for over £10m. We could have sold Chair to Leicester for £8m too. That's money this club can't turn down.
If we can scrape staying up this season, recover some of that lost value and get the conveyor belt going again, that will be fine by me.

I was at the game against Rotherham yesterday, sat with my Rotherham fan mate right by the QPR dugout and came away feeling confident that we're in good hands, just from watching him go about his business. Early days but he was calm and controlled and when the players gathered by the dug out whenever physios were on the pitch, they looked engaged and obviously liking to what he was saying. Could just be players looking to impress but I liked the look of him.
I'm eternally hopeful with the Rs... but not always as excited as I am with this appointment!

People keep talking about this guy as if he is a genius. As a Hammarby fan, I was never convinced. I feel like he makes very strange decisions and doesn't utilise the teams qualities to the best ability.
As an example, he recently played formations with a lot of central midfielders. This crowded the midfield and led to that they couldn't find anywhere to play and kept getting caught out and losing possession in dangerous areas or simply passing backwards, not leading to any danger despite having possession. He felt very stubborn with this approach and kept the same idea even though it wasn't working very well.
With the quality of the players that Hammarby has had relative to the league, I feel like there should have been better results.

Hello James! Im a massive Hammarby fan and i think the appointment of Marti is a massive gamble but an exciting one. I think that your point is spot on with needing an upgrade on Begovic feet, with Hammarby Marti had easily the best ball playing goalkeeper in Allsvenskan.
At his best moments in Hammarby we created the most chances and had the most possession in Allsvenskan, he is all about total control.
But in his downfall this season he couldn’t adapt to the large turnover of our squad and to the new arguably worse players. At times Martis football looked self destructive. Just passing around the back and conceding easy goals (Mainly while playing with a 343 as to the preferred 433).
I believe you could achieve success with Marti if he gets time and gets support in the market with the technical players that his system needs.

As a lifelong Danish Aalborg BK fan, I must be honest and say that I wasn't very impressed by Marti during his time in Aalborg. On the surface, he seemed fine, but the quality of play was never truly impressive. Let me explain a bit why:
    2020/2021:
Marti was appointed during the winter break of the 2020/2021 season, following the departure of the previous manager, Friis, due to personal reasons. At that point, AaB was in 7th place in the league with 19 points after 13 games, having a goal difference of -3 (15-18). The midfield was closely packed, with AaB only 5 points behind the team in 3rd place, but also just 4 points ahead of the team in 10th place. Marti had 9 games remaining until the league split into two parts (12 teams divided after 22 games), and he needed to move the team up one position. Unfortunately, AaB only managed to secure 9 points in those 9 games, winning only two of them against teams considered weaker than AaB. After 22 games and the league split, AaB found themselves in 9th place, level on points with the 8th and 7th placed teams. So, it was a challenging start, but to be fair, the squad wasn't built by Marti, and transitions take time, so it was acceptable.
AaB then faced the other 5 teams in the relegation playoff, and their performance improved significantly. Over the course of 10 games, AaB secured 5 wins, accumulated 18 points, and scored 20 goals. This victory in the relegation playoff opened the door to a playoff game for European qualifiers, which they unfortunately lost in a penalty shootout to the team in 4th place in the league. Optimism was high in Aalborg, and the future appeared promising. The team was winning, scoring goals, and seemed poised for a top-half finish with a chance at European qualification.
    2021/22:
The 2021/22 season appeared fantastic on the surface. When AaB went on winter break after 17 games, they were in 4th place with 28 points (just 5 points off 2nd place and 7 points clear of the dreaded 7th place) and had scored 27 goals. AaB seemed to be flying high, but was that really the case? The underlying metrics told a different story. Despite AaB's 4th position with 28 points, the expected points suggested that AaB should be in 10th place with 22 points. Additionally, while AaB had scored 27 goals, the expected goals (xG) indicated that AaB should have only scored around 21.5 goals. In reality, AaB's expected goals and points suggested that they were in a battle for survival, meaning that AaB was overperforming. It was at this point that Marti left for Hammarby, AaB brought in a new coach, and their period of overperformance ended. AaB finished the regular season in the top half, qualifying for the championship playoff, but their performance took a nosedive, making them the worst team in the playoff, winning only 2 out of 10 games.
The following season was even worse, and AaB's performance deteriorated further, leading to their relegation to the second division in Denmark.
At first glance, it may seem that AaB's decline began when Marti left the team while they were sitting in 4th place after 17 games. However, the performance under Marti wasn't as impressive as it appeared, as indicated by the expected goals (xG) and expected points (xP). AaB was significantly overperforming during his tenure. It's possible that Marti brought an element of luck or managerial skill that led to this overperformance, but during his time, AaB didn't look like a serious contender; rather, they resembled a pretender. Marti's stint at AaB lasted only a year, and perhaps he departed at just the right time, just before AaB's overperformance came to an end. I don't know how Marti fared at Hammarby because, to be honest, I didn't follow his career closely but that is my two cents on his time in Aalborg.
I wish him all the best at QPR and Loftus Road. Love the content James, keep it up.

Good luck, he is a great trainer as he showed his first season. This season the management sold off 4-6 key players and replaced them with youngsters from our feeder club from the 3rd tier and then on top of that some really bad expensive recruites which failed badly. So with the material he had access to it was honestly ok this season even though it was a failure as a whole. But not really his fault.

  • @Stormy177

10:25 That lineup might be enough to keep QPR in the division, as long as the EFL don't notice that a 5-2-4-3 formation isn't actually allowed!
Seriously though, my gut said get Neil Warnock in for the rest of the season to get the team believing in themselves and climbing out of the relegation zone, and maybe even the bottom half of the table. Appoint a new manager at the end of the season so he has time to get players in and out and get the team playing his style of football. By contrast, this is a massive risk - they're appointing a manager most fans in the UK have never heard of to the biggest club of his career to date, but the club itself is skint and looking at relegation unless he can adapt to the league and get the team playing football that gets results. Perhaps their lack of funds meant Warnock was unaffordable (or wouldn't have the transfer budget he wanted), and 'promising' is cheaper than 'proven' when it comes to managerial pedigree?
Heck, I might have reappointed Michael Beale on the basis that he had most of that squad at the top of the Championship around this time last season, so Rangers clearly thought that he was the real brains behind their success under Stevie G (whose Aston Villa was struggling since Beale left). I'm not a QPR fan (my dad is), so maybe I'm seeing his departure last season with a bit of emotional distance compared to many QPR fans - the team he knew well wanted to be the number one team in Scottish football again, and he (and they) thought he was the manager to get them there. That job was the only one that it made sense for him to leave QPR for, other than a step up to a Premier League team with genuine potential (e.g. Brighton).

I’m optimistic but like you I have my concerns with the current team. Will they be able to adapt as quick as they can otherwise we are going to see some radical changes. However, I’m glad we will be more possession based and having control over games. Having a go at the opposition instead of retreating and feeling like the underdog.

The biggest improvement they can make right now is to start holding people to account. From the board downward every person has been able to get away with doing anything they want, for as long as they want. Les and Amit are gone, so I hope Hoos takes that opportunity to get the right people in place, for those people to have targets/goals to achieve (like any other business!) and are then held accountable for the decisions made. I'm bored of the manager merry-go-round of "yes sir" men coming in, and as soon as they have something to say that isn't liked from above, they're out. A long-term plan and accountability are key. Also, I don't normally watch football videos and not sure how this came up, but it's great.

Hi James, just saw this video as recommended and watched it. I'm a Hammarby Fan, and have watched every single game with Cifuentes at helm. During his first season he had a quality squad all the way threw, he lacked a good #9, but the rest was golden. I know you're in to FM so you might have heard of Williot Swedberg who had a breaktrough season that year and later got sold to La Liga. But during his first season he had the players to play his way, he used a 4-3-3 where his Wingbacks was very offensive and his CBs stood wide in attack and the DM filled in between. He used two Inside forwards and one defensive playmaker and one free roaming playmaker who filled the spaces and won the assist leuge. Both of this guys have amazing vision and touch and they switched so both of them played both roles. We should have won the leuge this year, but we lost some cruical games due to him trying to much and messed up game plans against top teams, either that or unbalanced midfield. Last season he had such a turnover in the squad, I think we lost 6-7 starting players and didn't recruited the same quality (common in lower rep leuges), he tried to stay with his philosophy but we had a really bad start to the season, during our European spell we switched to a 5-3-2 system and we nearly beat FC Twente that is a much bigger club than us in Europe. He stuck with this system all season long, it's a bit more defensive system but the wingers still attacks. He stays with his CBs he uses a DM a B2B and a Offensive playmaker that nearly plays as a 10, his two attackers was hard working, one roam more to the spaces and the other stayed in the box. He was succesfull with this system also.
    Points on Cifuentes:
    - Tries to do to much against tough opponents.
    - Is adaptable to the squad.
    - Very good leader in lockerroom.
    - Likes to play and mold young players.
    - Intelligent and find ways to make players better.
    - Passionate
I think he can do very well in English football, it is going to be a learning curve but I won't be suprised to see some Hammarbyplayers in QPR in the future.
Good luck Cifuentes and QPR, tack Marti!

Biggest load of rubbish I’ve heard in a long time. First off as a 40 year old, the manager at 41 did not grow up watching Johan Cruyff. Fox is so left footed he wouldn’t fit into new system but Dunne would? We brought Ainsworth in last season because we were struggling and we needed a different, direct style to stop our slide and stay in the league. We managed it and so he probably deserved to start the season. We now have time to implement playing style successfully. Ainsworth was the correct appointment for what we needed at the time.
