  • This 1981 training program was developed to familiarize new Conrail operating employees with the basic workings of a diesel locomotive. However, the best part may be the cheesy "conversational" narration between the engineer and brakeman!
This presentation was digitized in 2018 by volunteers from The Conrail Historical Society, using an original Conrail training department Kodak slide carousel and JVC cassette tape from The Conrail Historical Society's archival collection.

I miss Conrail. I lived 200 feet off a CSX mainline. Conrail maybe 3 miles or less, but I could hear them and always felt Conrail just sounded heavier with more meat and bones to it.

Love the engineer, great video. Grew up watching these Conrails. Even got to climb into the cab as a kid. Engineer let me come aboard at the Avon,IN switch yard. It was a dream of mine to work there. Ended up having to settle pulling doubles in trucking but I never forget these trains were my first ❤

I know my Uncle Bill who was a conductor does, and probably my father who was hired as a conductor through Conrail then got absorbed into Norfolk Southern.

1:37 The wave of nostalgia we're currently experiencing was nowhere to be seen in 1981. This assessment of the steam locomotive was frank and accurate, at least from the perspective of the operating department.

i think conrail's management failed to shake the cheesy 70s style off
