  • For the past 175 years, organ builders Henry Willis & Sons have been preserving sacred sounds. The company has been in the business of building and preserving organs since the Victorian period, when founder Henry Willis became famous for creating some of the grandest organs around. Today, they are responsible for having built around 2,500 organs, and restoring thousands more.

    And to think that people think that the violin and piano are the kings of instruments. If they are indeed the kings of instruments then that makes the organ the emperor of instruments. I remember hearing the organ in one of the cathedrals in the city I live during my time as a piano student and it shook me to my core. Since then I've gone on to finish a degree and several diplomas in various aspects of organ performance and haven't really looked back. The piano and violin can move ones soul but none can shake the very foundations of a person's soul like a well-maintained organ in a great acoustic, it's beyond incomparable.

    I believe that we need more Great Big Story videos like this. A lot of videos they have been producing have been political, and what I believed was so great about Great Big Story was that their videos were NOT political, and they offered interesting and even random video topics, but they were really well made. This is simply my opinion that I felt like stating.

      @carolinelancelyngreen6834 Před 6 lety +2

      Unfortunately there is no plastic or other material which is quite as good as natural ivory, so existing ivory keyslips are carefully preserved and cleaned, and can last for several hundred years.

      There are various modern alternatives - even the Victorians sometimes used cow bone, or porcelain, and some modern synthetic materials are a decent substitute - but old ivories are always salvaged whenever possible.
