- For the past 175 years, organ builders Henry Willis & Sons have been preserving sacred sounds. The company has been in the business of building and preserving organs since the Victorian period, when founder Henry Willis became famous for creating some of the grandest organs around. Today, they are responsible for having built around 2,500 organs, and restoring thousands more.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

And to think that people think that the violin and piano are the kings of instruments. If they are indeed the kings of instruments then that makes the organ the emperor of instruments. I remember hearing the organ in one of the cathedrals in the city I live during my time as a piano student and it shook me to my core. Since then I've gone on to finish a degree and several diplomas in various aspects of organ performance and haven't really looked back. The piano and violin can move ones soul but none can shake the very foundations of a person's soul like a well-maintained organ in a great acoustic, it's beyond incomparable.
this totally reminds me of Mr. Rogers taking us to the saxophone and guitar makers. pipe organs are sooo fascinating to me. thank you for making this.
Bring back this beautiful instrument to every Catholic mass
Michelle irby, catholic mass does already
Building organs is saving lives.
This channel has such a high production value, it’s sad that it doesn’t get more views ):
I believe that we need more Great Big Story videos like this. A lot of videos they have been producing have been political, and what I believed was so great about Great Big Story was that their videos were NOT political, and they offered interesting and even random video topics, but they were really well made. This is simply my opinion that I felt like stating.
Wow 😮 Such beauty 😍 and such music ❤️ Love you Great Big Story ❤️
Henry Willis 4 was a character and a half, RIP .
I've been playing the organ for 3 years now and it is an amazing instrument. Great job on the video!
That would be fun to play on that organ.
Check your local church or town hall
Ahh, its fun to play on a liver. Get it?
Guy with the blue eyes is dreamy lol
Hello!! I am a huge fan of this channel!!👍👍👍
Wish you guys would cut longer videos so you could go into a bit more detail. :(
allluckyseven that's exactly what I thought at the end!
"What? Already over? But I was loving this!"
How do you get into a job like organ builder? Lol.
random bird get out
Oscar Armstrong you used to be born into it
as someone who has an organ factory within biking distance... i dunno
especially one like this which makes it in a sort-of-Amish kind of way
Oscar Armstrong start out casting or in metal work or cabinet building and then end up at an organ factory for most of them. The rest just love either music or church
Call anyone pipe organ company on the phone and you tell them you would like to come to work for them. Go there and fill out an application with either woodworking, electrical or pipe organ playing experience and you've got the job.
I learn new things about my family name all time. This is just amazing
Love the pipe organ, both classical, church and theater organ.
Used to be an H willis organ builder great job very rewarding but not very good pay or at least not when i worked for them, it was good to see two from my time still working
Absolutely brilliant
Why are these videos so short and where do we find full length features?
Organs are, at least in my opinion, the most impressive and grandest instruments created by man.
A wonderful instrument.
Thank you.
I love pipe organs! GOOD JOB! :)
I wonder if they have another type of pipe
Are there still any of the Willis family involved in the company? Or did they sell the company & the goodwill years ago?
None since Henry Willis 4's retirement in 1996, sadly.
They seem to know a lot about pipes
Absolute unit
Atheist here. I don't know if these organs have any religious significance or not but they sound great and I'd maybe go to a church one day to hear them only.
I recommend it highly...there may be one close but even worth a few hr drive if the right person is playing . . . absolutely a grand experience. (Religious or Not its a spiritual event, says a fellow agnostic-atheist
how do you think they sound like shit? it's basically just a super loud and epic piano.
@@Oscar_Armstrong >Who said they sound bad at all?
Plenty of organs in concert halls too...
Fred no change apart from the glasses comes to us all some quite a bit earlier.
F*** yeah pipe organs are dope, half to play some Johann Sebastian Bach
I love organs, need to get some Bach in my ears.
Wonderful.
Wow this is amazing. I love the sound of church organs so much ❤💖💕💓🙌🙌🙏🙏

Great Big Story OriGANS.
What do you use for the keys instead of ivory?
Unfortunately there is no plastic or other material which is quite as good as natural ivory, so existing ivory keyslips are carefully preserved and cleaned, and can last for several hundred years.
There are various modern alternatives - even the Victorians sometimes used cow bone, or porcelain, and some modern synthetic materials are a decent substitute - but old ivories are always salvaged whenever possible.

What if they get a daughter? Henry and sons and daughters?
The Willis womenfolk did play a part in the firm. The organ in the Lady Chapel at Liverpool Cathedral was largely designed by Henry Willis III's older sister.
LIVERPOOL
When reading the title, I thought it was gonna be a bong
is a Pipe Organ the worlds largest instrument? 😕
Yes. Atlantic City Auditorium Organ. Biggest, Heaviest, Loudest.
Yes! The largest in the UK are Liverpool Cathedral and London's Royal Albert Hall (in that order) each with more than ten thousand pipes.
@@carolinelancelyngreen6834And both by Willis - Liverpool was Henry Willis III and the RAH by 'Father' Willis!
Who was here because you thought it was about some kind of other breathing pipes? Wink wink
Cool art...😀
Notifications squad 😍
wonder if they're organ donors?... terrible dad joke, I'm sorry.
If you say your first your opinion doesn't matter
