  • In this video, I showcase the Nord Stage 4 keyboard by demonstrating selected sounds from a very old, yet very iconic song called “A Fifth of Beethoven,” written by Walter Murphy in 1976. The song features sounds from all three sound engines; organ, piano, and synth. This is the first Nord Stage 4 video released from My Keys to Music in what I hope will be a long line of content created using the Nord Stage 4 as the centerpiece for future performances and training.

      @MRFThorne Thank you! Ya, I thought the tune was perfect as well. As I was thinking about my first video, this song suddenly popped into my head (no idea how or why). From then on, I couldn't let it go, so I spent the 13 hours necessary to create this video which ended up being less than 2 minutes... But it was worth it! My daughter loved it too, which means the world to me since it's not exactly easy to impress a 15-year-old with music created in 1976 (or in 1808, depending on how you look at it). Awesome video Mark! Looking forward to all the forthcoming content. Rumor has it that the new samples for the Stage 4 won't be available for the Stage 3, is this correct?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      Hello @carsonlilley2310 thanks for stopping by and for your question. So Sample Library 4.0 is compatible with the Nord Stage 4 and the Nord Piano 5 only. Library 4.0 samples are not compatible with any earlier keyboard like the Nord Stage 3. Furthermore, as of this writing, the Nord Sample Library 3.0 samples are not currently compatible with the Nord Stage 4 either.
      So, if you own a Nord Stage 3, you have access to all the version 3.0 library, which is fairly complete at this point.
      If you own a Nord Stage 4, you only have access to the version 4.0 library, which is not complete at this point.
      If you make your own samples, however, using the Nord Sample Editor, you can prepare a sample that is compatible with any Nord keyboard that can play samples (for versions 2, 3, or 4).
      Hopefully, this answers the question! Nord says we have to wait for the 4.0 samples to be complete. But even then, they won't be compatible with earlier versions of Nord keyboards.

So far it's been great although "Scenes" work a little differently than I was expecting. They don't allow you to completely change things up, but rather just turn the engines on and off. You'll still need to switch programs if you want something completely different.

    Hey Marc! Do the samples and organ section sound better than on the Stage 3 in your opinion or sound the same? Congrats for the great content!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      Hello @hugoandrademusic the organ sound you are hearing in this video is actually generated directly from the Organ engine of the Nord Stage 4. No samples are used per se. The organ engine "models" the properties of a Hammond B3 (as well as other organs such as the Farfisa, the Vox Continental, and the Pipe organ). This organ model is based on the same engine (or at least the same foundation) used in the Nord C2D organ (which is no longer being made but was revolutionary in its offering). The Nord Stage 3 and the Nord Stage 4 both use the organ modeling from the same "C2D" cookbook. In other words, you will be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the organ sounds of the Stage 3 versus the Stage 4. Included in that family is the Electro 6. This is all a very long story to say that they sound the same.
      Now with all that said, I still need to put them side by side to verify that claim. Also note that although the organ engines came from the same ingredients, the Stage 3 and Stage 4 have slightly different effects units, so when you include effects as an important finalization of the sound (the icing on the cake, so to speak), you will, in fact, get different results between the keyboards. These differences are a result of the frosting types, not the cake itself, which uses the same exact ingredients. Hope these analogies make sense!
      It's also important to note that although, from a sound standpoint, the Stage 3 and Stage 4 organs sound the same, there are notable features between the two. For example, on the Nord Stage 4, there is a very important Bass + B3 offering which provides a variation for the organ splitting the sound so that you have a B3 bass sound on the left side. I have found this to be handy at times, as it's a feature on the Electro 6, and I've used it several times on various gigs to enhance my key bass performance while leaving the synth engine open for other things. Another difference is the fact that on the Stage 4, the rotary speaker can be "stopped" in a specific position which means your rotary can provide some nice options for you while it's not rotating. The Stage 3 has only a single "stopped sound effect" for the rotary speaker. But the elephant in the room is the fact that all the Stage 4 keyboards provide both physical drawbars coupled with LED lights so that you can "have your cake and eat it too". Having both of these options at the same time is not available on any Stage 3 keyboard.
      With all things considered, if I was really on the fence between a Stage 3 and a Stage 4, I would not give too much weight to these differences in the organ section. Instead, the big differences are more evident on the synth side of things, the way the layout and workflow are presented, and the availability of having all 7 engines on the same panel at the same time. That's where the money shot is. Of course, there are dozens of things to talk about when comparing the two keyboards - this is just the tip of the iceberg. I plan to do a comparison video (or several) at some point in the near future.

      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 8 měsíci

      Great question @MehradPiano - have you ever used a Nord keyboard before? Even if you haven't, I think 1 to 2 hours should be enough to know how to do the following:
      1) Navigate from program to program (patch to patch)
      2) Turn on and off the individual sections/layers and mix their volume.
      3) Learn how to do a basic split (if this is something you need).
      4) Navigate to the different presents which is where you'll likely find ready-made presets for the sounds you mentioned.
      1 - 2 hours should be more than enough time but you'd be wise to read up / watch videos ahead of the show so that you can walk in knowing which buttons to push when you get there.

However I have a problem: my piano sounds stop working on the lowest 8 keys after 1 hour playing. yes, weird problem. It works ok for 1 hour, then after that (if I am playing), the lowest 8 keys don`t play the piano notes anymore. If I leave the keyboard turned on, it keeps working, This is terrible and annoying situation since I need to sell it before I can buy the new model. @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello @rafaelthekeyman9646 Hmm, this is very strange indeed, and I can't say people have reported something like this to me. It feels like it's a hardware issue. If you turn on the organ, do those same 8 keys work? What about the synth? You can try to update the OS if you haven't already done that. Since it happens over time, it feels like something might be loose? Is it still under warranty? Are you located in the U.S. by chance? The reason I ask is that you could potentially sell it back to a retailer as a trade and they may take it as-is. I just did something like this with Linda Marie Music here in the States. But either way, with any kind of issue like this, someone is going to have to fix it - either you or the next buyer which will certainly eat into your investment a bit. 😢

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      @kruimel66 Welcome to the channel and for your consideration of a compact. The keyboard feels very good - dare I say great. But I'm a touch biased at this point, having played mainly Nord boards since 2017. Prior to that, it was Roland and Korg. The keybeds used in Nord keyboards (with the exception of the Nord Grand) are actually made by "Fatar" who make keybeds for a lot of the other brands too, so I think you are in good company there. Most people (not all), really enjoy the semi-weighted waterfall offered by the compact version of the Stage. The only time I hear people being critical is if they are really wanting a weighted feel or if they have played piano all their life. In those cases, the semi-weighted doesn't cut it for them. So, I think it really comes down to how refined your palette is for the weight and resistance of a keybed, and this might be something you just have to test if you can at a retailer. If you were to test this, you could get a close approximation of the feel testing a Stage 3 or an Electro semi-weighted. I cannot really tell the difference in feel between all of these, even though they are technically slightly different. I can tell you that in a blind test between a semi-weighted waterfall between a Stage 3, 4, or an Electro, I would likely pick the Stage 4. I can also say that the Stage 4 board is slightly less "noisy" than the others mentioned - not by much, but slightly less. It could be because it's brand new too... Best of luck. Feel free to keep the questions coming if you have them.

      Thank you for your comment. I often debate the same thing when I'm making these videos. What I attempt to do is bring up the volume on the keyboard loud enough so that you can clearly hear the board as the dominant sound, but I also don't want to lose the spirit of the song I'm presenting nor do I want to diminish the impact that the song has on the overall presentation. In all fairness, I do tend to isolate the keyboard sounds only on many of my videos - especially if that video is oriented around training someone on creating a sound or learning something hands-on. This video, on the other hand, was mostly made for "entertainment" purposes and as a celebration of a long-awaited keyboard for me personally. In the videos to come, you'll hear plenty of examples where all you hear is the keyboard only. Although, when it comes to "hearing the sounds of a Nord keyboard" - the CZcams community and the many retailers and distributors have already covered that aspect at length already. Stay tuned for more comparisons, training videos, and videos on integrating your Nord keyboard into other devices and software. 👍🏻
