  • Ojas Parvatraj Tambde is a 12-year-old boy with environmental sensitivity and scientific temperament from Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Ojas’ journey began amidst the COVID-19 pandemic when he observed a surge in electronic waste (E-Waste) due to increased reliance on mobile phones, laptops, and computers. This alarming trend prompted environmentally conscious Ojas to investigate the fate of this hazardous waste in his area of Dadra Nagar Haveli devoid of authorized collection centres and recyclers.
Ojas’ journey was marked by scientific inquiry. He conducted a comprehensive survey among students from various schools in Feb.23, delving into their knowledge of E-Waste and their family's disposal practices. Additionally, he meticulously traced the journey of E-Waste from homes to recyclers. An extraordinary aspect of his work was his ethical analysis, which he incorporated into his efforts as part of the Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Science Talent Search Competition. This ethical analysis illuminated the environmental unethics of disposing E-Waste through unauthorized channels, serving as an eye opener for students and their families.
Ojas did not stop at identifying the issue; he proposed innovative solutions. Despite the absence of collection centres and authorized recyclers in Dadra Nagar Haveli, he encouraged students to lead the change. His strategy encompassed educating parents and neighbors by students about the perils of disposing E-Waste through unlicensed channels. He advocated for E-Waste reduction, reuse by repairing and donating and safe recycling. For ensuring safe disposal he suggested collected e waste over period of time should be given to Croma Electronics (a Tata Enterprise, at nearby town Vapi) committed for safe recycle.
Ojas’ remarkable journey culminated in his presentation of all this work as action research project at the third level of the highly challenging Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Science Talent Search Competition 22-23. Ojas’ outstanding performance earned him the highest marks, the Gold Medal in the 'other' category (all Indian states excluding Maharashtra) and the prestigious title of Balvaidnyanik. His accomplishments were personally acknowledged and commended by the Honourable Administrator of DNH,DD & Lakshadweep Shri Praful Patel.
Ojas’ dedication to environmental betterment extended beyond personal achievement. He led and founded a Science Club in his school, Mount Litera Zee School, Naroli. In collaboration with the NGO "Wild Life and We" and the Science Club launched the "E Waste Warrior Challenge: Educate, Collect, and Safely Dispose" campaign. Fellow students educated their peers about E-Waste and its proper disposal, creating a ripple effect as these students, in turn, educated their parents and neighbours. The campaign extended its reach through social media, discussions, poster-making competitions, and quizzes cantered on E-Waste.
The impact of the campaign was substantial. It effectively educated over 15,000 individuals about the hazards of E-Waste and collected about 277 kg of E-Waste, all of which was duly handed over to authorized recyclers for safe and responsible disposal.
Ojas’ commitment to environmental sustainability did not end there. He presented his findings to Collector, Dadra Nagar Haveli, advocating for the establishment of authorized E-Waste collection centres at big electronic shops. In the interim, he recommended sending E-Waste to the nearby Croma Electronic (Tata Enterprise), known for its commitment to safe E-Waste recycling which give certificate and plant a tree in the name of doner.
Apart from this he has achieved international, national and Gujarat & DD zonal ranks among SOF science, mathematic Olympiads, National Science Talent Search Examination, Green Olympiad, ISRO competitions.
