My Top 5 Hydrangeas in July

  • We are many who love Hydrangeas and I have a lot of different species and varieties in the garden.
Here I will show you my Top 5 list in July. I’m making a presentation, telling about the different hydrangeas and how I prune them.
I grow the Hydrangeas in my borders among perennials and love the structure they give.
In the video I'm telling about:
Hydrangea paniculata ’Great Star’ (‘Le Vasterival’)
    Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’
    Allium ‘Mount Everest’
    Epilobium angustifolium ‘Album’
    Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla'
    Hydrangea paniculata ’Wim's Red’
    Hydrangea arborescens ‘Ruby Annabelle’
My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

I particularly am fascinated by the Hydrangea aspera Macrophylla and would love to find one for my garden. To my surprise the first Hydrangea you featured is one I have in my garden....Great Star is one of the most beautiful plants in my garden, I have a standard (tree) form of it, and it is just gorgeous in bloom! I also have a huge Annabelle which I have found does not flop much if you leave some old stems in amongst the new growth, it is growing in the ground. My next purchase will be Hydrangea aspera "Macryphylla...thank you for the tour of your top hydrangeas of July!

Off topic, but were those sanguisorba blowing around by the fourth hydrangea? I think so, and I was so glad to see them. I have them new in my garden this year and was a little disappointed to see that they are not more red. But seeing yours makes me embrace the very dark color more. Mine are not as open yet as yours. I really love the idea of those little orbs floating around up high like that. I love when I can put tall airy plants like that at the front of the border and they make a kind of layer you can look through to see the more solid plants.
