I’m guessing that many of you are dressage divas to the marrow! I know we’ve got riders from all disciplines in this lovely community, but if you’re like me, it’s dressage all the live-long day, and every single day!
So it’s really important to mix it up and keep things interesting for our super willing horses.
Cavaletti were invented by the Italian Cavalry officer Frederico Caprilli, (who invented the modern jumping seat) and they are incredibly good tools for our horses and our riding. They help improve our horses’ back, gait, strength, suppleness and elasticity. So let’s get working with some poles already!
This week’s video takes you through a cavaletti exercise I love called The Cloverleaf, and you’ll see why it’s called that in the video because we’ve got the drone out to film from the air again.
So firstly, when you’re using ground poles or cavaletti, always start off slow and go through the exercise at a walk.
Start with a single cavaletti, then build up to two in a row.
For the Cloverleaf exercise, lay out 4 cavaletti in a box shape.
To ride the exercise, you need to…
Come down straight over the box.
Change direction and make a loop.
Then come down straight over the box again but perpendicular to the previous line.
Change the direction again and repeat ad nauseam!
This is a great exercise for horses who rush cavaletti that are laid out on a straight line as asking them to bend after every traverse of the box takes their mind off any potential rushing!
Make sure to alternate your direction as many times as possible and keep your horse guessing.
Some important things to remember as you approach the cavaletti:
    Keep your horse straight
Come at the middle of the pole.
Keep your eyes up, fix them on a point in the point in the distance that keeps your head tilted up
Maintain the same tempo all the way through.
You can also use the poles for a canter exercise.
    Trot through the poles
Make a bend and ask for a canter.
Canter a full loop and come back toward the poles the same way as before
Trot over the poles once more.
Change direction and ask for canter the opposite way and repeat the exercise.
If you don’t have raised cavaletti, ground poles will work too.
Watch the video where Natasha and I go through the cavaletti in the trot and canter exercises, and let me know in the comments if you find it helpful!

Thank you for addressing cavaletti for dressage. I love to do cavaletti and small jumps every Tuesday. It’s my horses favorite day according to a horse communicator (totally unprompted). 😊

I’m always looking for new exercises to do with ground poles. Thank you for the suggestion! My horse enjoys working over the poles and it’s a nice distraction for him when he is amped up about something. Thank you again for the great videos. Keep them coming!!

I think I will try this today. My OTTB still gets really excited whenever we canter and has a hard time settling down into the trot or walk after he's cantered. This exercise should help him focus on his work, rather than getting excited about running away with me. Thank you 🎉

I love using the square for cloverleaf pattern and then using smaller circles and coming into it and out of it on a circle, so just riding through the corners of it. Can use the box to come in at trot and halt between the poles and then a turn on the forehand and out. So much you can do with just that simple square. I even have a pole out on opposite corners which are raised one end and low jumps out of the other two corners. Should be doing pole work for horse and rider at least once a week and if you are alone, this square is easy and quick to set up and put away afterwards. Even 6 poles out in a straight line are great for riding over all of them and going on a circle to just take in the last 3, spiral in and do last 2, spiral in more and do the last one then leg yield out to do last to before leg yielding out to do the last 3.

Another of your consistently informative and helpful videos! 2 Q's: realizing that one size does not fit all, approximately what distance is recommended between cavalettis for the average 16H or taller horse trotting over them? Also, from the air it looked like the distance was greater in one direction than the other and Natasha took 2 strides one way and 3 the other. Intended? Even if not, would it help to have one direction spread a little farther apart and then adjust your horse's stride accordingly?

Poles are typically 12 feet. The box/square would be 12X12. This works for most any size/stride. If you have a medium or small pony (13.2h or under) you may have more trot strides in between the poles but since this exercise is just trotting - cantering away but trotting over - the distance will work for any horse. :)
