A mighty impressive result! Considering that the Z28 has less HP, more weight, manual transmission and RWD, only two seconds slower than the Porsche ( and 2 faster than the BMW) is very impressive.
I think engine in porsche even being a smaller liter size i think weighs MORE then z28's engine. Also porsche needs dual turbo chargers to make most its HP.

Protector of the Republic I know right. That's the best argument they always come up with. Sticky tires this and sticky tires that. Its like the mustang guys complained that give the mustang IRS and... but are now complaining that te mustang gt weighs about as much as a regular camaro. If these guys get te same tires and performance suffers they will whine that the tires offset the inertia and balance, messing with the axle drive shafts and transmissions. That is what lets you know these are kids on the other side because kids always make excuses and dont accept reality like adults!

Kudos to the camera crew - excellent variety of camera angles... Was also cool to watch Randy Pobsts shifting and foot work with upshifts and rev-matched downshifts ;-)
So many channels seem to think that music is the best filler for the parts where there is no one talking.....you guys are not doing that and I love it. Let us hear what the car is doing and the telemetry is all the better. Awesome!!! Can't wait for the winner and perhaps a 2015 Mustang GT!!

We are living in unprecedented times for automobiles. Enjoy and respect their unique capabilities instead of fighting it out on the internet. Z28 or GTR? If someone wants to park either one in my driveway and toss me the keys that'd be just fine by me. Also, layoff the country bashing. No need to add "Japanese" or "American" to every negative comment. This car, is just a shot across the bow of other sports cars manufacturers. Its based on a Holden Chassis that is close now to 10 years old, the Alpha Cadillac's and the upcoming Camaro based on the ATS Chassis are at least 900 lbs lighter.
Hopefully, GM makes another high revving hand built high displacement motor like this one. Man this Engine can sing.

I have never liked Muscle Cars because of their track abilities. However, I am impressed with the Z28. And it gives that kind of a performance for a fraction of the price of a Porsche 911 Carrera S. I know that 2 seconds can mean a lot on the track, but seriously, how many of us are track drivers?

I drove a shuttle van in '99 during college; it had essentially the same radio display as in this 2014 Chevrolet. One would expect some advancement over 15 years.

I don't usually post comments, but as a gear-head I just can't understand why there's so much anger at a great car. It's a focused track machine with a phenomenal engine, a superb suspension tune, and exotic brakes. No one cares if you're neighbor's uncle has a faster BMthis or Porschthat, just appreciate a purpose built weapon.

Yea that funny how that is all they got to say, when it doesn't need a super charger or turbo to make that hp where all the tiny engines in like bmw or gtr need turbo's to make the same power. If i remember right some those v6's and straight 6's even weigh MORE then this 7 liter figure that one out? LS motors are known to be very tough engines and can take a bit of power.

I hear and read all this mocking about a $75,000 Z28. Give credit where credit is due. This is an iconic American Muscle car purposely built for the track. The engineering is brilliant along with an awesome engine sound. Professional drivers had nothing but great reviews on their driving experience. At less than half the price of the almighty 911 Turbo, the track numbers are extremely close. Great job Chevrolet!

Hey Motortrend when the GT350R comes out I would like to request a head to head between the GT350r and the Z28 please. Also trow a regular gt350 track pack in the mix as well.

I wish this showed more of what Randy was doing at the wheel because I've never seen a Chevy look that smooth at the limit like that. This thing has to be a handful, if only by what the numbers indicate.

Test drive one and you will have a big smile in your face. The sound is amazing, the shifter is perfect, the throttle response is immediate, no lag like turbo cars.

All the cars I have driver till now have been manual transmission. I just wanted to know how the paddle shifters work, like what type of difference there is in feeling while upshifting and downshifting... Like is there any possibility of using half clutch , if there is a clutch ?
The Z28 is the best track car of the bunch. It's meant for the track, it can do laps all day unlike the others.
Porsche couldn't supply at GT3 maybe, I think they wanted to prove with stickier tires the Turbo S could be faster than the Z28

The Porsche weights 300 pounds less and has more horsepower and torque. That's why it was faster.

MrKeyboardCommando Lol...but no. Porsche recalled all that were made pulled the engines. Replaced all the wiring harnesses, tuned them and gave them back. There hard to come by. Go to a dealer you'll see.

Hmmm, I honestly expected it to be quicker.
It was only 1 second behind the Viper T/A at VIR, and faster than the Turbo S at both BarberMotorSports & VIR...
But here it's only about a second quicker than the GT500... dissapointing
This is more of a HP track. Longer sweepers allow faster cars to stay in speed.
Barbara has the most turns/corners of any track in the US it seems. Leguna has a very long strait unlike Barbara. 12+ turns/corners at Barbara will slow any car.
Hell INDY cars are slowed down there.
VIR is a little more technical like Barbara. Has to 2 long straits and about 3+ miles long. Barbara and Leguna are about the same distance at 2.3 miles long.
At the end of day still a Camaro. People forget how bad the old Z06 was in it's time. Put these same mods on a old Z06 and new Cup2 tires. Would easily tie the Viper ACR time here.

People coming up here comparing the Camaro to the Nismo CLEARLY don't have a mortgage, bills, insurance payments and definitely don't have a woman. In the FANTASY land of make believe you can afford another 50 THOUSAND dollars and buy a Nismo. But out here in the real world, you are just talking. Plus, anybody looking at a Z28 will not be looking at a Nismo and vice versa.

Next yr. will have much better cars. Hopefully a NISMO with this N-Pack Track stuff is here. Maybe 650S,Huracan,918,GT3 and Z06 + new Viper TA 2.0 in this test.

The test is called the best driver's car. Not the Fastest car test. Z28 and 911 Turbo S are the favorites. I another knew this last month. The tuned NISMO video is out but he says doesn't like the car in certain aspects.
If they put these mods on old Z06 like GM should have, easily same time a Viper ACR.
Z28 is still a Camaro at the end of the day.

Is there a reason that the 911 is so much faster? Something does not add up. In all other comparisons both the 911 and the z/28 are much closer than that. Does the Camaro have fresh tires or is that the track has some pretty good straights that favor the 911? looking at the G-meter looks like the Porsche is pulling some serious G's around the turns. It just doesn't make sense.

Yes, he does quite few laps here. Z28 tires probably take the longest to get in heat. There is a gauge on dash to tell the temps.

Camaro Z-28, BMW M-4, and Nissan GT-R,? If I had the money, I'd buy all three and drive'm all enjoying everything each one of them has to offer. I don't dig Mercedes, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, etc. because I know my place and those are way too expensive for me and I am a realistic person. Anyways, good job guys, and keep the good work!

Thought the Z/28 would do better for what it's intended to do.
It's still a Camaro not the old Z06. Put these same mods,shocks, and new Cups tires on old Z06. It runs what the Viper ACR did sometime ago.
GM left a lot of time on the table with that Corvette.
The Z06 will and always better then this Z28.
Next new Z06 will set a record if the 918 isn't here.

i'm afraid the Challenger is a little too big to be anything of a sports car, its more of a grand touring car for its size and weight standardly, we'll have to wait for them to build a totally different model that is smaller and more agile with wheel base, 1st gen like Barracuda maybe...
I agree with you 90%. The challenger is mainly so heavy because of all the sound insulation and comfort tech that it's got. I'd be willing to bet they can easily drop 500+lbs out of it. That then drop in their fire breathing hellcat motor, I think it be a competitor.
Even though this is "stripped out" it still weighs 3,800 pounds

It's funny that they talk about the Camaro being big and heavy, but the Nissan GTR actually weighs more than this Z28. Also, the GTR has 100 more horsepower, AWD, computer assistance, costs a significant amount more, and only got around the track 2 secs faster than the Camaro. I was sort of shocked.

I think it is a bit unfair that they don't enter the lap at the same speed.. the alfa 4C for example began the lap with 100mph and the Z/28 with 108mph.. which is a pretty big difference imo
