  • Hey All! This is one of those films that is the definition of epic. There were so many things happening in this film that (for a time) I had no idea what exactly was going on or where the story was going. But it all came together in the end beautifully. Awesome movie!

    The final scene where Claudia smiles directly at the camera is the most touching ending to any movie I've seen. She's the most broken character, and deserved to find some ray of hope.

    You really have to rewatch this a few times. You are brave to talk about it after one viewing! Aimee Mann wrote most of these songs for this movie and they are great!

      I didn't know she wrote the songs specifically for the movie. PTA always had great soundtracks.

    Great reaction! Just found your channel, watched " Sleepers" and "Boogie Nights". Just as a side note. Lived through the 80's in Hollywood. My husband and I worked for Hustler and knew Larry and Althea Flynt.

      Hey thanks for watching with me! Was the theatrical version also 3 hours?

      It was. First time I saw it there were a handful of people in the theater. Second time I saw it a week later and the theater was empty haha.

      @mikewatchesstuff Paul Thomas Anderson has said he wished he had edited this down a lot. I love it all but more people would maybe have seen it if it wasn't so long

    One of my favourite movies of ALL TIME! Really enjoyed your reaction. There aren’t much reactions of this film out there. Glad you checked it out.
    It’s really amazing I have new insights from your comments and takeaways from this film. Magnolia is really rich in fine detail that way, which is why I love it sm!

      Hey, thank you for watching with me and for leaving a comment! I wasn't sure what people would think of this one, because I was so confused in the first half of this movie I feel like. But in the end, hopefully I was coherent :)

    The reason why in the final scene Jim's voice is muffled beneath the song, although we can understand what he is saying, is because the most important are the lyrics of the song. The camera is on Claudia's face while she is listening to Jim and the lyrics reflect her thoughts and wishes, particularly in the chorus, "But can you save me?, Why don't you save me?, If you could save me", and when she realizes that the man she's fallen in love with is indeed going to save her, she breaks the forth wall, looks straight at us, and we get that glorious smile that makes for one of the most beautiful endings I have ever seen on the screen. Magnolia is one of my favorite movies alongside Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood For Love and Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Parts One and Two and Bram Stoker's Dracula and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life and John Ford's The Quiet Man and a few other's. An absolute masterpiece. I watch it lots of times and sometimes I watch just the dizzying and absolutely frantic and genius first half an hour, my favorite intro to a movie alongside the first three minutes of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

  • @gggooding
    @gggooding Před měsícem +3

    The intro is all stories from "Ripley's Believe it or Not!"
    As is the frogs falling from the sky (kinda...it was fish in Kansas, I think).

    Someone holds up a sign with an Exodus number whatever the number. The same way signs with Bible quotes at football games. That quote is the one about pharaoh and the frog curses

    • @gggooding
      @gggooding Před měsícem +1

      The bible verse is hidden throughout the movie. The wires against the wall in the intro, on street signs, other places I'm forgetting.

    Exodus 8:2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country.
    82% chance of rain
    The rope on the roof of the building by the suicide jumper forms an 82
    Part of Frank's phone number has an 82 in sequence
    One of the door numbers has an 82 in sequence
    There's quite a bit more I can't think of right now. You caught the "Exodus" sign right before the first frog drops, I never caught that before!!

    Haven’t seen this in years. Great call out to “Requiem for a Dream” I think they’re both great, but I can never watch Requiem again. I have seen this more than once which adds to the experience. Great Reaction.

    In answer: I _don't_ suggest Liquorice Pizza for a reaction. Its sort of a love poem to 70's LA without much of a plot. _I_ enjoyed it a lot, but I like weird, arty stuff more than most everyone.
    From PT Anderson I *highly* suggest The Master and Punch Drunk Love. I think you'd really dig both those.

    I'd love your reaction to "A Ghost Story." It's a completely different kind of film but seems to hold to some similar themes.

    So I'm sure u did a deep-dive into this film. So u can go through all the times 82 is referenced. Exodus 8:2 is the frog pestilence. 82 is EVERYWHERE in this film, at least 10 times. On the plane that fights the fire, vines where Stanley jumped, times, humidity, booking mugshot, etc.

    The poster was nice and nice pictures and not much info. Old ladies thought it would be great for their groups. In the first thirty minutes about one tenth of the audience walked out in a huff. That terrible language pissed them off. This was especially true in the South. They saw a Magnolia and couldn't help but think of moonlight and magnolias of the old south.

      You know, ironically, that's also the reason I never thought to check this movie out when I was younger. Just the title of the movie alone sounded like something I wouldn't be in to

    Do you like movies from the action background, older of course 70’s 80’s Like gator, gone in sixty seconds, bullet, stick, for a few , Dirty Harrys ? I know you get a lot of suggestions ,just offering a few more.. I like your let it breath style, a three hour movie ,and reaction over an hour is great, a lot of reactions take godfathers down to 25 min.. just not for me. Keep it up. Glad to see the old ones get dusted off

    Didn’t watch _Boogie Nights_ at the time, but did see this one in the theater. *Loved it.* Bought the soundtrack and got the VHS- which I still have, haha. Such a wonderful film, with great performances. 🩶
    Edit: 38:33 I forgot that they re-enacted that scene in _Barry._ 😂 Not funny here, but hilarious in that context.
    52:10 Well… 🐸🤭
