  • A new era begins in Greater Manchester this weekend - with bus passengers in the driving seat.
For the first time in almost 40 years, private operators will have no say over routes, fares, frequencies, timetables and overall standards, giving power back to the paying public. Franchising - beginning on public services on Sunday - marks the biggest shake-up of bus services here in a generation.
It's the first step for the Bee Network - Greater Manchester's bold and much-needed plan for an integrated, London-style transport network - and a drive to reverse the decades-long decline in bus patronage.
The Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester has released this archive footage of buses over the years - from SELNEC to GM buses - as the Bee Network begins in Greater Manchester.
Which buses do you remember travelling on?

At least these operators had a timetable and some buses you could set your watch by them.

well, around bolton so far the bee bus network is a failure on a massive scale, there is no timetable live or otherwise, drivers are staring at pieces of paper guessing which buses theyre meant to be driving and the bus station is filled with people complaining that theyre between 30 minutes to a hour late for work and still have not caught a bus, others are in mass agreement that they couldnt think it would get any worse last week, but they were proved wrong this morning, a bus route that was meant to go to every 12 minutes had a gap of 45 minutes between buses .... so yes ... i am glad i borrowed money to get mountain bike as waiting for scheduled buses this morning has been a joke.
