I love that both of the top 2 most popular videos this College's Engineering channel has is literally just John Carmack being filmed talking. Is Carmack our era's Isaac Newton? I think he's in the discussion. Almost no one today has brought together a vision of so many areas of scientific expertise to fundamentally change industries. John Carmack *requires* hardware acceleration to play Quake3, revolutionizing gaming, creating the GPU industry, massively influenced Microsoft's approach to DirectX, creating a huge leap forward in how software interacts with hardware. That GPU industry inadvertently extinguishes the existence of one of the most wonderful and epic heavy lifters of all time, Silicon Graphics, which we should all have nothing but respect for, but whose approach was made obsolete by Carmack, Nvidia, ATI and 3DFX's pursuit of $150 GPUs to play Quake3. A few years later CUDA is unveiled, and from it modern Machine Learning makes the leap from theory to reality, all borne out of this GPU industry, along with computer vision, self driving cars, and now OpenAI. This reminds me of the similar flurry of technological advancement that directly followed Newton publishing the Principia which unleashed Calculus on the world.
@@ProHumanity his speeches are charming, he radiates passion for knowledge ( the 'unscripted' live videos he made for oculus, now meta, are fantastic and really honest... not marketing speeches ) He would have been an incredible professor
The Honorary Degree should be rescinded and exchanged for a full Ph.D. His full body of work and his level of intelligence has long since surpassed that of the average college professor.
Alarming that the few occasions over the last twenty or so years that I have come across John's recommendations, they have been the exact same each time. Focused hard work, and knowing things in depth.
Great speech. The only thing this speech was missing "after you have done the same boring task 50 times, you can automate it because by that time, you understand the requirements well enough".
This is by far the best graduatiin speech, and one of the best life advices I have ever heard. Thank you for posting this, and thanks to Carmack for the great advice and all the fun hours I spent playing ghe great games that he created (or took part in their creation).
Been following this dude since the 90s. It sadden me greatly when Armadillo went into hibernation, but thankfully others picked up the torch and carried it to undreamed of heights.
You certainly cant say Carmack has not accomplished a lot over the years. How much he changed the gaming industry, building rockets, and stuff work into VR.
ladies and gentlemen...the master of the antilife equation, earth stranded nihilant, the binding keeping reality together, hyper genius and actual juvenile dlinquent creator of skynet....Carmack!!
I love John Carmack and i love that to see someone who actually deserve a Honorary Degree, gets it. But i think his advises here... is exactly what took him to divorce, so ... i think you can always do what he does, thake everything th its core... you will be better for that, but i think as humans beings, we need to try to find the balance between actually living and working.
I used to play the game back in the 90's and made the same mistake. I thought it was called I.D. Software. Then I got the 'Masters Of Doom' audiobook and heard Wil Wheaten say the name of the company correctly and I felt so stupid. Oh well.
Yeah, divide between poor and rich bigger than ever. Pollution of the planet reached maximum awesomeness. We have the cold war coming back. The planet's resources are getting scares, even sand is getting scarce. Increasingly more nations become autocracies. The future is awesome 😎👍 I wished I was that naive.
Good God I could listen to Carmack talk about the properties of paint as it dries and I'd be entertained. Great man.
Perhaps the best man
He is an oratory wizard.
It's weird seeing a person get an "Honorary Degree" who actually deserves one

Wow. It's very different to hear motivation from an actual accomplished guy than a professional late night motivator. Thanks John
Funny thing is that he recently said he was often called a Late Nigt Show motivator by hes peers on younger years. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The only person who could give advice with the disclaimer that "this might be sub-optimal advice".
"Fill your products with give a damn" right on.
Carmack really is one of the geniuses and legends of our time.
ABSOLUTELY !
Fucking. Legend. I feel so grateful to be alive in the same time period as John Carmack.
Such humble and generous person. Thx for countless hours of fragging fun :-)
The Honorary Degree should be rescinded and exchanged for a full Ph.D. His full body of work and his level of intelligence has long since surpassed that of the average college professor.
This is why Carmack is such an amazing game engine designer.
John Carmack was a huge inspiration to me in working to get my CS degree at UMKC. Giving him an honorary degree totally makes sense. :)
From Bafta awards Jonh D Carmack: "So, thank you very much for this onor, but I'm just getting started"
"Fill your products with give a damn."
This ^^^.
attend a year
drop out
come back for the honorary degree
I'm actually jealous of the depths of his obsessions.
you forgot step 2: be a genius
@@glenneroo3193 Not just genius, highly motivated and driven as well. With a good work ethic.
The fact that his disclaimer states his advice might be "sub-optimal" I think qualifies him to give advice

It's like he read the script one time - and memorized it. amazing

I like looking at the approving old guy in the far right.

Much love for John Carmack!
It's like someone told him to: Just relax, say something brilliant, and also make it seem super easy
I love how you say I self identify as an engineer. That is a wonderful way to use that statement. I self identify as. Well done.
Ever wonder what doom guy might look like? That's him, John Carmack is the doom guy.
Honorary degree doesn’t deserve you, John Carmack!
Excellent Analysis, Thanks John
Based speech by Carmack, well done
He is down to earth and the concept is better explained here than in Jobs' speech.
He is a nice guy. I am now a fan
Congratulations John!
"Fill your products with give a damn".
gives me chills

Brilliant!
You can tell that guy on the far right of the frame is intently listening to everything John is saying.
Confirmed founder of PC-MR
living legend!
Great motivational speech.
Wise and to the point :)!
That was a really good speech
Embrace the grind
The baby crying on the back really annoying , people should have manners to take their children outside to let the man speak 😒
I agree. Inappropriate to being unmuzzled beings into a commencement.
Awesome!
Interesting insight, thanks
From eye-dee software...
And somewhere in a dingy little conference hall, John Romero was still talking about Doom.
Hit the nail on the head. I've never seen a better example of someone living on past glory.
And now he released a new map pack for Doom. Funny.
There's literally a video on my recommended that is this.
Glad to see snoop dog (4th from the right) among these beautiful minds.
😍❤️
Anyone came here after my recent comment on this speech ?
Hola Elon, me pregunto si juegas con Gpt-3? un Saludo.
Fucking genius
anyone here from dogelon tweets?
Eloquent as always
0:20 "EYE-DEE software"... seriously?
Tbf, many people say Eye-dee Software, instead of Id Software. It's not exactly the worst spelling.
I also called the ''Eye-dee Software'' to begin with

That dean didn't do his research. It's "Idd" Software. Not "eye-dee" Software.

Great visionary, great speech damn that baby didn't want to stop crying in the background.. how distracting
The person with the baby really needed to be there, I guess...
Hahaha love that he burned all newbs who can't do it from total scratch 🤣 don't get me wrong can barely even claim newb status on this end.
Ow man, why would someone bring a baby to an event like this.
Because they have a baby
It is awful. Parents need to be slapped.
Feynman is still my hero. Carmack took these epaulets. czcams.com/video/Dkv0KCR3Yiw/video.html

John and Elon should work together for a brighter future.
It's "eed" Software, not "eye-dee" Software! Somebody didn't do his research, ironically.

Its Id, as in ArachnID

The speech is good, but the outfits are so cringy it hurts. Reminds me of the mad cultists of the free masonry.
He actually should start his own university giving others degrees.
