Lady K, you've nailed a niche in the sailing YT world, and I'm impressed with your content 👏 keep it up! I've watched countless hours of your videos and can honestly say that you've contributed so much to my families sailing dreams. Your hustle has been noted 📝💯 thank you.
Thank you!!
Been subscribed for long time. Just wanted to say thank you!! Been dreaming about sailing, overthinking it also. lol. Well, 53yrs old and listening to your advice and information I’ve purchased my first boat. Ericsson 32. Excited, nervous and ready!! I’m also now a patron. Please continue on. Including YOUR dreams.
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much!
Sailboat 22 feet with galley, 5 berths, seawater toilet, swing keel, 8 HP Yahmaha two-stroke outboard engine and everything else you need: rope, tools fender, gas bottle and and and $ 1000. Invested in a new German handmade sail genoa, electrics and other 1500 $. I am happy. My first sailboat. I'm sailing on the Elbe river Germany and the Baltic Sea
Sounds cold!
@@humblestever24 Great name btw! =) But I guess you don't like compliments lol.
@@UncleJoeLITE Here on the Elbe the season is from spring to autumn. I often go to the boat and go sailing for two or three hours in the afternoon. Sailing on a river is very interesting because of the current.
Sometimes I can do 11 knots over the ground when the wind and current are good. You will then need to carefully calculate how to get back to port at high or low tide.
The Elbe between Hamburg and the North Sea is a river with ebb and flow.
You can also plan longer tours at the weekend and go to the Baltic Sea during your holidays.
Greeting Andreas
@@segelnmachtfun We have no rivers you can navigate more than maybe 20nm from the coast here. Not many harbours either, the land is too old &, well, see above.
Happy & safe sailing, I often envy you Northern Hemisphere-ers
_The Elbe-Neisse was key to my history major paper, 22MAR45 to 01MAY45. General Busse used a little sailboat in part of his 1000km journey home home after the war._
If one lives on the west coast of the US, Cal 20’s are great cheap first sailboat and often can be found on facebook or craigslist for under 3k. Most are part of clubs which comes with a built in community. That is what we did, and I couldn’t be happier with our purchase. We’ve learned so much from our fellow club members and the boats are pretty simple.
Sweet!!! Practicle Sailor You Tube Channel!!!
If I may suggest, put the link in your pinned comment...
Tim ! I keep telling you I'm to old to start sailing ,ok I've wanted to for over 45 years, it's just to expensive, So this morning I can't sleep and what do I see on FB ? A Free Mirror Sailing Dinghy, ( no trailer) no problem, I have a trailer, I use for my Canoe, ( not on the trailer as the Canoe is waiting for a fiberglass repair, so I drive for an hour, "Canberra" People love to give away, or sell stuff very cheap. So "we" ( wife and grandson) at the man's house, Great little craft, Load it up, thank the man, Have Dinner at a nice restaurant, So home and I'm watching videos how to rig a " "Mirror" looks super hard ! Let you know when we take it to our favourite l lake ( Dam actually) I'll let know how it goes
Sailboat bargains are easy to find here in MN especially after August. We have a 3 month sailing season, 5 if you don't mind a little cold. I have bought several late in the year, fixed whatever needed fixing and sold them in the spring. Best deal was an Oday 23 on a trailer, OMC saildrive, and a few extras for $1500 but no sails. It had been sitting in a barn for 20+ years. Put new tires on the trailer and found a set of sails from another Oday 23 for $200. Now I'm off to subscribe to Practical Sailor channel.
Love my Westerly Centuar. 26' . Idiot friendly, 6' headroom, 6 berth. Yanmar 29hp engine. Bilge keel. Built like tanks. Just love her.
Excellent suggestions, especially the smaller sized to learn on and take home. No slip or mooring fees, keeps the goal of actually getting out there easy. Thanks Tim!
I don't understand people who buy a 34 footer as their first boat either. Learn to sail these smaller boats first imho. Some people can afford to hire a skipper to teach them - I call those folk "rich but..." lol.
Love your channel and have been a subscriber to Practical Sailor for a while. Easily the best resource out there for the DIY sailor or anyone that maintains a boat regardless of percentage of elbow grease they contribute.
On the "adventure". If the sellers weren't people I think that would be fun. I'm convinced a fair amount of the good things in my life have resulted from trying to follow the golden rule (Luke 6:31, etc.). Aim for fairness and let the adventure happen on the water.
Amen!
Thanks Tim, great episode good info it gets me thinking
Lover your videos. Looking forward to the next one.
Love this! Needed this! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Big Big Congratulations 🎆And I am heading over to Practical Sailing NOW!
Another great video Tim! I'm one of your mature dreamer fans, and you are getting me excited about sailing on my next house move. I am heading over to your new site. Thanks again. Marty
Love your content. Sailing on a budget is my plan since I don't know if I'll like it. Heading to Practical Sailing now!
I bought a boat super cheap from fb marketplace. I have no idea how to sail or even why i want to. I'm afraid of the water and don't swim that good but for some perverted reason i have always wanted to learn to sail! What the hell is wrong with me! Anyway i got a com-pac 16, trailer, motor and new sails all for under $1000. I figure if i don't like sailing I should be able to sell it for what I have in it.
Me too except i live in L.P..of the crummy state of michigan and even when i lived in indiana i have thought of getting or building a '26 ben seaborn T-bird. Again ive never sailed anything in my life. My dad always had bass rigs.
Your video describes me. My currrent first boat is an 81 WWP15. Will learn on her and then move up to a 22-25 footer. Keep up the great vids!
Adventure video sounds awesome
Tim, congratulations on Practical Sailor. I've been following Lady K for a while now and like you practical advice. I agree that a small trailer sailor is a good step onto bigger cruisers and also agree with you that being crew on club racers is a good addition too. It provides experience in all types of weather. Our Kirby had 5 crew (we could do well with 3) so quite often one of us would be "pimped out" to help on another boat that was short handed. That gave me exposure sailing different boats. Most clubs have a "help wanted" board so to speak.
Top notch Tim.
I have purchased several cheap sailboats examples Cal-25-2 2500 Sail ready V berth Q Berth Head Diesel serviceable sails. Great boat. This is most likely the best pocket cruiser for the money. Catalina 38 paid 16 flipped. Santana 35 interior shot Super fast mono points high enough to give you nosebleed. 7500 still own this one doing refit to take to gulf.
Worst possible boat cal 25 flat top. Any Catalina that is is subject to Catalina smile. Many boats 82-86 terrible blistering due to changes in resin.
Once again, a superb video for us sailors. Heading to the PS video right now mate.
thank you so much for your kind words!
Hey good advice! getting a cheap sailboat for experimenting sounds good I like the $1500 trailerable sloop sailboat for playing with my family.
I bought a Seafarer 26 on a trailer for $3300.Nice shape, crisp sails, shoal draft, great capsize ratio, 6' 1" headroom.Solid glass no coring. Whats not to love. Was able to talk the guy down and that's really all the money I had. He loved the idea I was going to cruise the great lakes with it. They are out there. Thanks for the video
Yep. I found my Catalina 22 on Facebook! 1000 EUR. Thanks Tim 🔱⚓
Fantastic!
Master of the "cliffhanger"
Practicle Sailor You Tube channel!!! Sweet!!! B be first subsciber!@
sounds like a good plan...go get that boat can't wait to see that.
Congratulations!
Keep it real.
Thank you! Will do!
People will be DAMNED surprised about how expensive a "cheap" sailboat will cost over time.......💸💸💸💸💸💸💸💸💸💸💸😭😭😭😭😭
Not necessarily. Buy the wrong new boat and you will have the same problem.
That's simply tuition. I bought a $1,500 Able 20 back in the 90's. Sailed it until the sails needed replacing and sold it for $800. I got at least $2,000 worth of fun out of it.
It doesn’t have to be that way. For boats this size there’s plenty of second hand parts, sails and lines for sale. Anti-foulingis expensive but you don’t require much. If you need mast repair you can simply drop the mast with some help. It all depends on how expensive your berth and/or storage are going to be. (don’t know about insurance in the US)
I found a free ericson 28 on FB marketplace. I passed. It would have been less money to buy one in decent shape. The only two things that one had going for it were that it floated, and it was free.
Thank you
I like this video as it can really get us poor folk sailing and having a huge BLAST!
I called on an ad on Craigslist and talked to the owner; he mentioned that a broker was going to list it soon so I went to the Brokers site and found the boat. The pictures the owner had put up was when he bought it new. The pictures from the broker showed the boat was in terrible shape. The picture from the broker actually showed the diesel halfway taken apart. With three different metals on the exhaust Loop. I think they went and fixed it with parts from the Home Depot. Some barn find😮
The cheapest part of owning a boat….is buying the boat 😉
I love your content!
Cheers
Consider doing a short video recommending a USCG Approved Safety at Sea Course. Perhaps you can get schools etc to subsidize it. This ensures buyers are better prepared for various eventual emergencies at Sea, one of which could be running around or how to avoid it. People also might think it difficult to capsize say, a 30 footer, but all you need to do is sail with waves at the wrong angle and turn sails wrong and either get rolled or "pitch-poled." These happen all the time to even those who have taken sailing courses.
I’ll check out the practical sailor channel 👍😎👍
My 1st sailboat was a Catalina 27 got it for $6500 and for four years I took that thing and learned how to sail out of deep River Connecticut. I took that thing around the outside of Cape Cod Newport Cuttyhunk Block Island, watch hill, Rhode Island Montauk well worth that money
Bought my mcgreddor 1989 26d for $3500 perfect first boat to learn on the lake
I once wanted to buy a 50'+ live aboard. So I travelled the coast asking every sailor, in every harbor, a series of questions. The 1st one was always... "How much does it cost you?" ... and invariably I always got the ~exact same~ answer..., "Every penny I have!". [lol a& grin]
I still dream of doing that tho. [smile]
Trailers quite often need the bearings repacked/ replaced. "Bearing Buddies" are well worth it, they can be easily greased..
Excellent video. You Rock.
Nice job Tim this is the perfect time of year for this kind of video, tax season.
You got that right!
You can either get a great deal on FB or someone elses nightmare. You definitely have to be very discerning on FB when you are reading the ads. Getting a great deal is awesome but you could also be getting someone elses endless project with hidden agenda. I like that you are exploring the lower budget folks (like me) though, there are lots of places I would love to see you explore like sail boat listings...
Sensible 👍👍
Buyer be very aware on Facebook Marketplace. Whole lot of scamming going on there.
Thanks again Tim this was an inspirational vid for a non sailor wanting to learn on Oneida Lake
Glad you enjoyed it
@@LadyKSailing
yessir I really do enjoy your channel. Started watching when you basically just started it and am pleased to see the success you deserve
thank you for watching!
That would make a great video
I sold a sailboat on FB Marketplace. Easy peasy.
Rosa Lee is a great boat name, but I’m biased! ❤cool little boat
Ed B. is smiling in Hotlanta. Great shout out.
Yes good idea for content. Price should be about 100k. Find good deal and buyer will come and get it Im sure. Great Video.
I wouldn't restrict a search to $4500. Boat ownership is extremely diverse. There's a really good chance you will come across someone who loves their boat, for whatever reason can't use it as much as they'd like. They have enough money to keep paying the costs, but they just can't use it. So it's time. A young sailor comes along and says, I really like your boat, I would like to buy it, but I only have $3000 -- Is there any possible way you could consider...? Try to go see it. Maybe the owner needs the garage cleaned out, the gutters fixed. (When I arrived in Los Angeles penniless, I 'earned' a Volkswagen by painting a rental property. I even got some pay. ) Sam Holmes was given a boat for free by someone who was happy he'd fix her up and sail her. And if anyone uses this just as a ruse... Poseidon saves lightning for grifters.
Wow,… I might have $10Gs - in my sock drawer - great segment,… I mean it!
I just bought a 38 morgan for 2500 needs a little work but everything works
Would be great to hear about sailboat rentals. They tend to be very expensive. Why there are no affordable ones for one day rental?
I’m friends with the guy who listed that 22’ Catalina, Lance, in Jacksonville. We’re both Navy.
Nice! We never could agree on a price so no harm done. Tell him thank you!
Hi Tim, i have a video request if you're open to it. I have been doing a lot of research about the Gemini Catamarans because it ticks so many boxes on my list. Is there any way you could talk about them as an affordable catamaran cruiser? i know they have their limitations but i really think they fit your channel profile. Here or in Practical Sailor? Thanks.
That is a good pitch and not to be rude, but "lowballers" are also a bit of a pita too. Cheers LKS and thank you for all you do brother, stay salty.
The most expensive sailboat I’ve ever owned was one someone gave to me free
Hi Tim we're getting ready or wanting the spring to purchase a boat's just what you're speaking about on this video 25-ft seen them for 3 for what brand name for a first-time boat would you suggest thank you so much
Honestly, whatever is nearby and reasonably priced. Any sailing is good sailing. The laser, Catalina 22, things like that are very popular.
@@LadyKSailing thx tim
Ok, I have to let you know of another source of super cheap boats: keel boats on lakes. Here in the finger lakes (NY) keel boats in the $1-$4000 range can sometimes be found for next to nothing, or even free because the cost of shipping makes it not worth bothering for buyers. Essentially, it’s an unliquid (illiquid?) market. If the 30 people on that lake shopping that season don’t want it, suddenly the boat has no value. And yet, the owner is facing thousands in slip fees for another season if they don’t get rid of it. My last boat, a Catalina 27, I got for free and sailed it for 2 seasons. Then, I got a sweet Chris Craft Cherokee 32, for… free! My marina had to “crunch” a couple boats last season because they couldn’t get rid of them😢
Interesting. Are the Finger Lakes connected to the Erie Canal?
@@allancook1890 I’m not sure if all of them are, but the two largest, Seneca and Cayuga, are. Also lake Champlain. I’m sure there’s other examples in the US. Places like Florida have zillions of boats, but also zillions of buyers.
@@Horstdelorenzi so, someone with a bit of time could get a boat and float it to the Great Lakes or Tide Water. Save on shipping and have an adventure. That does sound too bad.
🍻
I literally saved that Catalina 22 in Jacksonville yesterday
Yeah??
Noooo the first classic Mac on the channel, and it's been messed with by a moron. This is something I ran into constantly when shopping: The more accessible a boat is, the more of them get ruined by people who have no business owning them.
It seems the difficulty with an older boat that may require a marina will be getting insurance, which is required now by most marinas. Even if insurance is potentially available, it likely will require a survey that may be an added expense, and the outcome may not go so well with an older boat. If someone is shopping for a "cheap" boat, these are added expenses that are likely not in the budget. Sadly, depending on one's perspective, if the goal is to increase exposure to sailing for the masses, insurance can be seen as having harmed the sport (note that insurance companies will also even dictate what waters can be used or place other restrictions). In recent times, this is not only the case with sailing but many other sports/activities as well. In addition, it is worth noting that I was once kicked out of a marina simply because I had an old boat and a "rich" guy complained to the marina management. I hope that was an isolated incident but such things can happen to an old boat owner. Nonetheless, I had more than enough fun with that old boat to make up for the bruised feelings. Just a heads up for awareness of these issues for any one looking at a "cheap" boat and thinking of using a marina at some time.
Some people just dont appreciate the old boats. I have the same problem with some old cars that i have. Old haha. 1 is a 1979 trans-am sitting on my driveway. Used to be my daily driver.
believe it or not, some of your viewers are in Europe :) 👋⛵ just saying! Amazing what in on offer form 3 - 4 grand
Ha. A roadkill of the sea Chanel would be great. Buy a cheap boat. Take it to a destination fixing it as you go. Then sell it.... that would be awesome
What if the Catalina 22 w/trailer owner said "yes" to your offer of $3k? Would you have then gone down there to pay and pick it up? Just wondering how you would conclude an experiment like that. I like the ideas you give in this video about the low cost of sailboats just kinda iffy on your methods.
Awesome first boat at my marina Catalina 22 3000$
😮
excellent!!!
I have caught the sailing bug, and with no experience, it's taking all my self control to not drive from alberta to bc and buy a boat 😅
Tim I'm seriously looking into working on some boats to see if I should buy one.
My question to you is.
Is there any demand for a red seal Chef on a sailboat?
On a megayacht sure!
Thank you 👍
Hey Tim, I've been seeing articles & news casts that talk about it becoming more difficult to find places to "live aboard" your own cruising boat without paying marina prices. But, then again, people like to make drama. What have seen/heard?
Live aboard marinas typically do not adventise that they are such. It's always on the DL. Find a marina where other poeple live aboard and go there. It's hard becuase no one wants too many live aboards so they don't mention it - it's all very hush hush. Or live on anchor?
When buyers send me a story i send back a longer and more tragic one.
How about this: We buy my first sailboat for $2K, and you can write from the perspective of an experienced sailor, and I will write from the perspective of a newbie. Of course, you have to come to Florida to do it.
Deal!
Still waiting for that laser sailing video....
Season is coming :)
If we buy a trailerable boat like these in the US, how easy is it to bring it back into Canada? Are there steep import duties to pay and taxes?
The same as bringing anything acorss the border. They will want the value of it so they can collect duty. People do it all the time.
Where in Florida are you? I'm in Stuart and would be interested in an in person consult ✌️⛵
I'm not in Florida right now
I've often had people say to me; "I think I want to learn to sail. What kinda boat should I buy?". Makes want to slap 'em. I usually respond with; "If you thought you wanted to learn to fly, would you buy an airplane first?" Get some experience with seasoned sailors and find out what you actually want to do on the water.
How does one contact you for consultations? Thank you !
ladyksailing.com/consults
Can any keelboats be towed by a small 4 cylinder car, like a Toyota Corolla?
Yikes! What's the towing capacity of the car? 3500lbs? The Catalina 22 is 2200lbs, ad for the trailer and we're at 3000lbs. My bigger concern would be the trailer wagging the car. You'd have to take it VERY slow. Might be safe to just buy a laser or CL or similar. Could tow those with a bicycle.
@@LadyKSailing Ok, thanks for clarifying!
That's why they're called B.O.A.T.'s. Bring on another thousand!!😢. But you got to love them. Cx
My first sailboat was a Danica 16 its designed after a Nordica16 I bought the boat here on Vancouver Island and had loads of fun with it. It was on a trailer so I could bring it home and dunk it in the chuck or a lake anywhere I wanted. I even took it off shore on the west coast - next stop Japan - so to speak.
czcams.com/video/0Ay34OxiDVI/video.htmlsi=h1gtUKLlvnNrsyyJ
In Florida sailboats 16 feet and up require registration. You will get pulled over. Any story that does not involve registration papers being handed over for both trailer & boat individually is a LIE !!!!
B.O.A.T. Enough said…
Keep watching the adds on FB and Ebay, long before you want to buy.
You start to see patterns forming, what's legit, and who's scamming
Same with cars, I watch loads of adds, even if I'm not intending to buy.
If something looks super cheap, or even right priced, and it's being re listed all the time, there is probably something wrong with it.
You wouldn't know that, if you've only just started looking.
Genuine bargains come up all the time
It's even better if you happen to know the boat, from your local harbour, and have been watching it for years.
Some Guy with a couple of kids, going out a few weekends a year, isn't trying to pull a fast one, he just wants to move it on and buy something bigger.
Don't forget ebay that's where I got my boat
Somebody get "Rabbit" Pitts to sell a sailboat.
hahahahah wouldn;t that be something!!
Don’t you mean that it’s like wanting to make pizza if you’re in Connecticut? Shout out to Frank Pepe.
Sadly good old magazine is gone
Good Ol Boat yes, it is gone now :(
An Ericsson 32 asking $4k. If solid??? Room for sails or maybe an engine? Probably a dying atomic 4, they didn't come with a diesel. If that is a "new" engine, tons of $ for the rest. Boat on trailer looks like a Rhodes 18, unlikely most had keel, not all.
Love how you can bullshit as easily as me on marketplace. I'd be more inclined to say ''Hi, im rich and tight as F@$k. I just want a cheap boat so my kids can relate to common people. I want to be the best dad I can be. How's 3k and I'll swing around in my cayenne this afternoon?"
I love your videos. Just an editing thought though... more boat less face on all your videos. There is nothing that can replace the over worn truism... a picture paints a thousand words. You offered insight and details are valuable and trusted, but it is with our eye that we can do our own "survey" as we watch... key word here, watch what you are presenting. Let us see more of the object of the discussion... and your analytics will go up! You have worked hard to get to the point you are. Yet, I would bet that you could reach (pun intended) farther, faster with more images on this image driven format.
thank you for the suggestion!
Could you please make a video on insulated sailboats? I know Hallberg-Rassy makes them; who else does? Thank you, I'm trying to educate myself as best as I can before making a purchase. You know what I'm saying? I'm trying to be a new Practical Sailor: www.youtube.com/@practical-sailor
Good snow and more like it . People don't need a 35 foot for their first boat . Learn how to sail and buy bigger and upgrade that boat
"turboed" boat is "dangerous". Funny I would think people would have been dieing every weekend for years in races across the country. Sailors have been putting bigger sticks in boats for years with no problems.
Hint if you want to continue as an editor for Practical Sailor: Stop lying when you are boat shopping (your story to the Florida seller). Practical Sailor is reputable and should not want to risk that.
Not sure I agree with this one… It's just one bit of cancer that must be replaced. After another pretty soon you could've bought a nicer, more ready boat for less and money by far. Save your money spend it on somebody else's almost completed project.
Please, for the love of God, don't become one of those channels that uses the thumbnails of the overly shocked and surprised person. That is SO over done and an instant turn off to me. I have loved your channel for a long time and really appreciate what you bring to us. PLEASE don't let this thumbnail style become a part of that. I won't even watch this video because of it.
I agree - was just experimenting :) Also trying new things to see what works
@@LadyKSailingYes, I get that. It will be interesting to see. Apparently these thumbnails must get views because people use them, but I'm curious to see if others feel like me and think this is overdone across CZcams. Either way - best of luck on the channel and your very cool new job!
$3k and not sure you will like sailing... JOIN A SAILING CLUB! FFS SMH
If it were so easy to get home made trailer registration why doesn't seller have one? All Lies!!!! All stories are LIES !!!!
Who hurt you?
