- well what can you say about a man who seemily did it all? amazing stories that unfold here on news reel items from around the bay area in the 1960's...we start with kesey outside ' the winterland ballroom' after the upcoming 'acid graduation test' was cancelled by bill graham who basically was fearing for his licence....so with the grateful dead and anonymous artists of america billed to appear it was moved over to the prankster warehouse over on harriot st. in the SoMa district where just a few hundred turned up instead of the several thousand kesey hoped for at winterland...the dead in turn didn't make an appearance instead playing 'california hall' and only the AAA playing what was to be the final test in san francisco...next we have kesey and other's promoting the trips festival at the longshoresman hall 20th january '66 in union square with bewildered locals looking on....then a bloody and battled looking kesey after being arrested may 1st '66 but not before his lawyer leading him abruptly away when he starts to speak!...then kesey and his girlfriend 'mountain girl' (carolyn adams) arrested after a rooftop chase....then a rare look at kesey giving a speech at berkeley's greek theatre may 12th 1970 which i hadn't seen in full before....i hope you enjoy this collection i've edited together that many have never seen....

This footage is from soon after Ken and Carolyn were arrested for smoking marijuana and in order not to serve time agreed that they would no longer say anything positive about LSD and I guess marijuana. That's why he is being so evasive with the press. He can't say what he actually thinks without going to jail. I'll repeat that, he would have ended up behind bars for saying what he believed, a prisoner of conscience.
I didn't see your description of the footage until after I posted the above. But what I wrote still holds.

Ken served 4 months which was far less than what he was threatened with. Leary on the other hand served 7+ years for not much more that what Ken had, & Leary was tortured. Charlie Manson was next to Tim in Folsom in August 76. Manson helped Tim in figuring out how to navigate & survive in that Steel Chateau.

We should neither be romanticizing and glorifying drugs nor demonizing and criminalizing using potentially useful and beneficial consciousness altering substances. We should also not be blind and naive to the sometimes serious and irreversible possible harm and damage they can do as well.

It was dirty and trashy with addicts in the streets in 1970s. No tents though.
We drove through Height-Ashbury and golden gate looking for my cousin who ran away from home.
