Last Wall Tent Deer Camp of 2019

  • It's nearing Christmas and I'm out at the deer camp for one last trip this season. We filled up the corners of the freezer on this one for sure! TN State law allows us to get up to 3 does per day. I had more than enough opportunity to do that on this trip, but I left it at 2. After all the work involved in getting the two back out, plus my gear, I'm glad I didn't get greedy with the deer meat, lol. I had intended on loading the deer in my truck, but it wouldn't start. Unfortunately, the battery had gone bad. Luckily, the Jeep is a heck of a hunting rig and got me there and back out with both deer!

    As always, you never disappoint with your videos, I always enjoy them. I especially liked the way you responded to the comment about shooting at a running deer, instead of doing like a lot of people do, getting loud and offended that someone would questioned your ethics, you remained calm, even keeled and explained it brilliantly. Some people get butt hurt over seeing something, and instead of asking a civil question about it, they respond with a snooty tone, as if they are the know all expert at what they are commenting on, when that attitude generally brings back an answer that has the feeling of defending ones self, you had the right attitude.
    I have been hunting for over 50 years, I have seen and taken all sorts of shots, for the inexperienced, it might seem some of them should have been passed up, but I know my capabilities, and if I feel it is beyond me, I don't take the shot. I also always look for the best place to shoot if an animal happens to be in thick cover and moving, find an opening, and wait for that animal to reach that spot and then take the shot, If it is running and you have the spot picked out it is only a matter of waiting for the animal to reach that spot, if I shoot at one running in the open, I have already looked what direction it is going and lead it. The last deer I shot was running, about 50 yards away and running broadside to me, I had no way to lead him because of cover, but saw he was heading to an opening and prepared to shoot there, he ran into the open, I was aimed at the far side and fired when he came into view but led him by about 8 inches. Down, dead and piled up instantly. I once had one in the past running broadside in very thick tree tops after a logging, only one opening, he ran into the opening where i was waiting to shoot, as I squeezed the trigger he was in mid-bound and his legs never held him up when they came down, dead on the spot. there have been others. As for grunting trying to make them stop, or waiting for them to stop, they don't always stop, when they have been shot at all day, they will sometimes just bolt at the slightest sound, not all deer stop in gun season like they might in archery.
    As you said, some people never progress past their initial lessons and what arm chair hunters tell them, nothing is written is stone. One needs to know their abilities, and practice, practice and more practice is what makes the difference. I actually have used a remote control car, towing a small wheel card behind it with a target on it to practice moving shots, it helped to the point i have shot running rabbits with a .22 and have about an 8 out of 10 hit ratio because of it, where before practicing it was maybe 1-2 out of 10.
    As usual, great video Wiggy, a might be in my 60s now, but I still learn from the younger generations and I have learn much from you my friend. Respect and God Bless, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

      Nice way to address all diff types of opinions , as long as your legal your ethical ,eat what you kill, or give it to someone who will, a hunter owes that to the animal, nothing wrong with shooting a running deer? Really people?? Stay safe, good luck, have a good time in woods,that's what it's all about!

      Its called the GREAT OUTDOORS,, so if ya go from a house, get on a 20 thousand dollar 4 wheeler, ride 5 0 yards from your stand, get off and walk into a little house that has a DOOR and a roof, other than the 50 yards you walked, are you in the Great Outdoors ???, No way I could sit in a little house to hunt, I would go stir crazy, if I wanted easy, I would sit on my porch, in a Leopard speedo and shoot them off my porch,

      That is one thing that has always impressed me about Wiggy's videos. They show that a working stiff, blue collar guy can still be a successful hunter without having to mortgage the house to buy expensive camo, firearms or bows. Solid, tried and true gear, patience, and woodsmanship will get it done just as well...and Wiggy shows that in every hunting video he posts.

    Excellent point about shooting at running game. From rabbits to moose, here in central Ontario, Canada if you don't shoot at running game you would go quite hungry. We also use hounds for hunting and find wounded game . I taught Hunter Safety for 25 years and there are lots of ways to become a good shot at running game. One such way is skeet shooting, I have shot more game running than standing still. Instead of finding fault with other's hunting methods (Archery, Muzzleloading, Crossbows, etc....) we need to support one another. The anti's love our in-fighting. As long as someone obeys the game laws "Live and Let Live". Steve

      Steve Wagg. I agree with you 100%!!! Me I'm not into archery hunting but I have a lot of respect for most that do. Some are such snob's when it comes to the hunting method or the jackass' that just has to comment about not being able to eat horns🙄.

    • @gregbeuer9817
      @gregbeuer9817 Před 4 lety

      The part I say about not being able to eat horns is not meant to be a jackass,it is for the ones that think you should only shoot deer with 130 or 170 inch deer and like I always say I believe in managing your heard and your land.They think you can't do that dog hunting but it has been proven several times in some of the clubs I've been in. We were only allowed to shoot 8 or better for about 3 years and it was amazing until a bunch of high dollar still hunters got together and bought the land and started shooting people's dogs.

    • @leorapsonjr9134
      @leorapsonjr9134 Před 4 lety

      @@gregbeuer9817 so you're telling me you would pass on a 170+ buck? I make no apologies for what I said, the only statement I hate more from "hunter" is... If it's brown it's down. 🙄🤦. I've only got two bucks ever! A 7 point in '15 and a 4 point this year. Lol I was probably more excited about the 4 point. On my property it's 6 or better but I'm the only one that hunts there because a few couldn't respect that and shot what ever walked in. My father in law only hunts for 8 and up, but he butcher's and uses the meat so it's not going to wast. I am currently doing the late antlerless hunt in lower Mi. Because ya can't eat the horns lol. Have a great new year and many successful hunts!

      @gregbeuer9817 Před 4 lety +1

      @@leorapsonjr9134 no way brother I am definitely not a if it's brown it's down person like I said I see no problem with managing your deer and the property my problem is one person hunts a certain way some another way all hunters need to stick together dog and still hunters people that are just totally against dog hunting have never done it in or around a group of people that know how to safely do it and I have been in a few clubs where we ran dogs and we used the 8 or better rule for three years you talk about something hard to do but we had so much fun those three years and it definitely helped with the deer heard more bucks so it has been proven you can dog hunt and grow decent deer herds and it doesn't ruin the meat from running them with dogs the worst deer I ever had was a deer in Georgia he was in full rut and had been chasing this one doe along with another buck we saw them earlier that morning

    Congrats on your harvest!!! Glad you were seeing deer there. Here in WV it was a hard season, all three seasons!! Bow season I only saw one doe and her fawn, buck season only saw one deer and young spike, and muzzleloader season, you guessed it nothing!! Even though the WVDNR said mast was as good as last year, I don't think they got in the woods to verify that. Both on our lease in Fayette County and at deer camp in Greenbrier County, we had no mast. What mast I found on the ground I picked up and cut open with a knife and it was black inside. It has been a long time since I have went without harvesting a deer, I at least usually get one or maybe two, but it has been a long time since I went home completely empty handed. If we saw deer it was when leaving and you would see them in power line right of ways and in fields eating grass. Really like the tent hunting, wish we could do that ourselves. I remembers seeing some guys from southern WV that had come to Greenbrier County to buck hunt and they had a big wall tent and I always thought that would be the way to really hunt. Great video, loved it. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year. Juddie - J & J True Outdoor Adventures

    You got some fine eating there! Here in Texas we usually don't have the luxury of hanging deer at camp, it's usually too hot. So, I got dressing a deer down to just quarters, backstrap and trimmings to an art. Immediately upon shooting a deer I load it into my truck (no field dressing) and take it to camp. I hang it with the head up and I use my truck to pull the skin off. The hind quarters and shoulders come off quickly, then the backstrap and then I trim out the neck and rib cage. Everything goes into a cooler with ice. The guts stay intact, so it's not as messy. I back the truck under the deer and cut the head loose from what's left of the body and let it drop onto a tarp in the bed of the truck. The head stays with the meat (state law). Then I dump the body where we dump all of our carcasses. From hanging to dropping the body in the truck takes about 20 minutes.

I got out of it last year because I moved and it’s twice as far to drive than it was and it got to be to hard of work to go there . Besides the timber company that we leased from had destroyed the woods and the roads where it was next to impossible to get to a deer stand . I can hunt right out my back door on my own place now where I live and can sleep in my own bed at night . My wife hunts also and it was to hard for her to go to the deer camp with me and hunt . We can sit in the same stand together or in different stands now . I saw you took two big does and their the best eating . My wife processes all our deer meat and makes jerky, summer sausage, ground meat and steak . If we take one early in the morning I field dress it as soon as it hits the ground and bring it to the skinning rack and skin it out as soon as I can . Usually within an hour . Then I’ll wash it down with a water hose and let it dry and glade over . I’ll take the tenderloins out first and my wife will cut them into thin steaks . She salts and peppers them then flour them and fries them until there brown on both sides then takes them up out of the skillet. She makes some homemade biscuits and makes brown gravy in the skillet . That brown gravy over homemade biscuits is the best breakfast you’ve ever tasted . Tell your fiancee to learn to make homemade biscuits and brown gravy and try it . Just let the steaks brown on both sides and take them up quickly and don’t leave them cooking long . It doesn’t hurt if their a little rare. They will be tinder . You want your steaks about 1/2 “ in. thick . I really enjoyed your hunting and camping video. It brought back a lot of memories. Have a blessed day.

    I was taught at a young age to practice identifying and shooting at a running target since much of the game you see in the woods will be running, mostly away. Many of the deer, rabbits and squirrels I have killed where running. I have also bow shot deer on the run with fatal results. If you are going to use a firearm of any kind to hunt you should practice to maximize its effectiveness for any situation you might encounter. That early practice served me well in my service in the Marine Corps, that is why I am still alive and kicking.

      Agreed. I've shot more deer on the move than stationary. Especially when bowhunting, they rarely jump the string or duck the arrow if you shoot while they're walking.

    Love your videos. I think it is because they are different than the other hunting vids on CZcams. Yours are very honest and have a nice easy flow to them and at the same time capturing that pure joy of being out in the woods deer hunting. Keep up the great work and those deer should make some fine eating.

    You have a really nice setup. Good luck in 2021 season. Look forward seeing the next videos.
    One suggestion I would make is to clean off a space under your feet, so you can be more quiet when you have to stand and move around.

    When I saw the notification for your video i told my daughter that my favorite youtube deer camp hunter just got 2 deer! It's great to see this in the late season. I am gearing up for the xmas hunt here in AR. Hope I have your kind of luck. I always get good ideas so thanks for sharing these deer camps with us. Nice to see your fiancee again. You make a good couple. If she cooks as well as she shoots she is a keeper! Merry Christmas!

    Wiggy, I have watched all your videos multiple times. They keep me in the deer hunting state of mind throughout the year as I prep for the next season. I love all the deer camps you've had. Why do you think this one had over 255K views? They're all awesome!

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you for your support! I think the reason this one got a lot of views was a combination of having a neat thumbnail image and also being the most recent deer camp video before the COVID-19 lockdown when everyone was at home. That's my theory anyway, lol.

      @@WiggysWilderness Got any new gear or new tricks up your sleeve for this fall's deer camps? They moved our antlerless season in AR to combine it with the post-Xmas modern gun hunt. So I have Thanksgiving as usual, and then Xmas for a full week. I hope you get plenty of time out in the TN woods this year! Maybe you'll get to do some bow hunting before Halloween?

    Thanks. I always like seeing how other hunters do things. I have since moved up to a small camper trailer but its not as fun as when my best friend and I hunted out of a 10' x 20' car canopy and slept on cots. Go figure.
