    Too much nitrogen causes too much green leaves you want potassium to get the blooms I also add epsom salt when they are growing. Calcium keeps the watermelon from getting black spot and rotting. Also slow down on the watering a few weeks before you harvest it helps with sugar build up instead of getting a bland melon full of water. This also goes for strawberries let the dirt dry a week or two before picking.

    I’m growing two small varieties for my first year growing watermelon. 1 sugar baby and 1 petite yellow. I got a early start on the season…started indoors 3 weeks early..transplanted in May. They picked up pretty good in June and I actually ended up getting two flowers pollinated, they grew for a bit…rat ate one…the other ended up splitting at about baseball size. I didn’t give up though…fertilized the plants and in July they grew like crazy, more then they ever have and now I have 4 that successfully pollinated and are getting closer to full size. I’ve been watering basically everyday a little and it seems like they aren’t splitting which is something I am worried about. Here in the PNW we don’t have the longest season but I’m think these 4 will be able to finish by October hopefully.

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  Před rokem +2

      What to do is add straw mulch on the bottom that would observe some of the moisture, sometimes in watermelon there is too much water and it's so hot. This could cause the splitting person in the watermelon.. Try the water a tad less and pruning will help alot🙏🏾🌱

    • @denisemiller8474
      @denisemiller8474 Před 2 měsíci

      @@aliceboyblue I was incorrect potassium is for root growth. Phosphorus is for root and bloom. Urea and or nitrogen ( blood meal) is for green leaves. I add phosphorus when I start seeing vines on my melons. But be carful not too add to much. I use phosphorus about every Six weeks too keep it blooming and for health. Calcium helps with bottom end rot so I add that a few times a summer while they are growing. Then stop watering a week or so before harvest. Watering too much at the end of the cycle makes the sugars sweeter in the melon. Only water if the plant is wilting. I also prune the shoots when I see one or two on the plant. Tip and cut off shoots . Baby watermelon can have a few more watermelons on the vine . You want the energy too go into one or two bigger varieties instead of growing a lot on one vine .

    'Leaf burning' with watering during middle of hot, sunny day is a myth (the fact is, the burning is so miniscule that it's truly not worth mentioning) - Furthermore, what you said about water evaporation is the true reason to NOT water in daytime. You are correct, however, with watering in morning or evening. Only problem with 'evening watering' is that it promotes mold growth. Morning is best time for watering. The rising sun/temps will burn off sitting water, thus thwarting mold growth and promoting better, healthier growth.

    Great video! This will be my second year to grow watermelon and I'd really like to get more this time. How many melons do you usually try to keep on each plant/vine? I've seen other sources suggest just (1) or (2) max per vine.

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  Před 7 měsíci

      So one watermelon plant will give you about 3-4 Mellons .. the key to get the max is to keep the plant healthy, once you see a sign of a watermelon , add fertilizer and keep adding fertilizer every 1-2 weeks .. also water is very important , stick to a water and schedule , water enough... Do a light prune at the beginning of the plant , keep the root area clean , get good air flow ..

  • @jeffmeyers3837
    @jeffmeyers3837 Před 16 dny

    I pruned my watermelons per your videos, and it stunted them for over a month. Here's what I did, you can tell me what I did wrong. The varieties are Ali Baba, have 3-4 vines each, longest vine was 2-3 feet long. I pruned off all but the main vine. After that, all growth stopped for about a month, after which it resumed growing. Nothing else changed. I have other watermelons that I didn't prune, and it seems the more vines and leaves they have, the more energy they have to set fruit, those have much larger fruit (at least twice the size). I am in a short season zone 5, frost free from May15 to Oct15. Should I have done anything different?

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  Před 16 dny

      I am sorry to hear that... So normally I don't prune out all of the side shoots.. only From the beginning of the plant maybe 2 to 3 side shoots I remove... I also remove the leaves around the main root..... The only time you could remove all of the side shoots is if you already have a couple watermelons on the main stem... So the whole idea is if you remove more side shoots of the beginning of the plant, the energy basically focuses at the growing point of the plant and that way it speeds up the ground process actually... But even if you prune all your side shoots and you have the main stem going, it is normally not supposed to stunt the growth..
      For example, I do have one watermelon plant that has two watermelon right now and two Vine at the ends. So I pruned all of the vines of the beginning and I leave the main Vine with the two side shoots to focus more energy under watermelon and so far it has been grown rapid fast... I will try to see if I can make a shorts video on it..
      Next time only prune out two to three side shoots at the beginning of the plant. Leave the rest to grow as soon as you have about 2 to 4. Melon , You could then decide where to prune off the speed of the growing process..
      Give me a day or two. I will show you how I'm pruning my watermelon right now before fall or winter weather......

    • @jeffmeyers3837
      @jeffmeyers3837 Před 15 dny

      @@Greentgarden Ok so based on your response, I think my mistake was pruning it when it was too young (before it set any fruit) and only leaving one main stem. So you're saying I should wait until it sets fruit before pruning at all right?

      The most natural calcium would be eggshells, but it takes too long to decompose ..( You have to blend it and then add it but it still take to break down)
      I use the organic garden lime works well ..
      I use this once a month.. or if I have any blossom end rot problem.. It's good to add fertilizer every 2 weeks to most plants like pumpkin, squash, zucchini, tomatoes peppers

    • @jeffmeyers3837
      @jeffmeyers3837 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Turn eggshells into liquid calcium by drying them in oven, the putting into jar of vinegar. The acid in the vinegar reacts with the eggs, pulling out the calcium into the solution until all the vinegar acid is consumed, leaving just calcium rich solution which you can dilute and apply to plants. Many vids on YT about how to do this, works great.

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You could put fresh grass clipping on the base of the stem, 2-3 inches layer .. where you normally water.. This will increase the nitrogen fertilizer and help keep it moist ..

    good video on watermelon , how do you tell when they are really ripe ? when you buy them at the store if your lucky you might fin one with a yellow spot ,the rest are all green . they say it's ripe if there's a yellow spot which is hardly yellow , also knock on it if it sounds hollow and has that little brown spot from the vine it's ripe. all three of these together is supposed to mean it's ripe. and they say they ship them all green because they don't want them to ripen before the get to the store . we know there not going to ripen after their picked. yet they seem to sell a lot of green ones, so ho do you really pick a ripe one? the fruit markets are the same. i live in up state ny.

      Make sure the tendril is brown, watermelon looks fully growing. I also look at the color make sure it's not dark green. It's a little bit lighter green , an old school knocking sound if it's hollow.. coming up soon. We'll put it a test again. So far in the past I did pretty good. Keeping my finger crossed lol

      Water every one to 2 days lightly do not over water too much...
