    Peter Martin's numerous scandals finally came to light. Of course he will deny it until his dying day. If it was just 1 or 2 people you could think they were just bitter about something. But a lot of people that worked with or knew Peter Martins said the same things.

    So strange watching this video after reading a New Yorker article about how abusive and misogynistic Martins is. Quote from a NYCB dancer about Martins: “He hates ballerinas. He hates beauty. He hates Balanchine.” Everything in the video now sounds hollow.

    Having just read Bernard Taper's "Balanchine", I am thrilled to see this man, Peter Martins, continue his legacy. The way he works with the dancers and adapts the choreography to their particular skills is straight from Balanchine's playbook.

    Out of anyone to say Martins is carrying on Balanchine's legacy (or was) is his wife? Geez. What a tremendous disappointment he was in so many ways. And he started with everyone pulling for him - audience, press, everyone. What a glorious dancer he had been. I read his book and one of the strangest things - he is the only person I know who praised Balanchine for his administrative skills. Nothing in Martins' dancing prepared us to know that he was a violent person (had to read Kirkland's for that). His book was written as pretty much a letter to the board "Give me the job." So he emphasized his enthusiasm for administration. Anyway. Whether Balanchine wanted Martins to succeed him is murky. Anyway, Martins got the job apparently over Joseph Duell, who was on Kirstein's list. After Balanchine died, I spoke with people close to Kirstein, and they all said, "The company is going to die without Balanchine." No, it didn't. And for that, we can thank Martins. And the audience. We weren't going to let that happen either. Such a shame. He danced with such beauty - power that was submerged into beauty while still totally masculine. But his ballets, although with quite inventive steps, were cold because they didn't reach out to the audience. Hello? We're here, too. They were mostly studio ballets. He did have a knack for redoing the classic ballets, though.And for creating events and bringing in other choreographers. Well, history will tell. But...we still have NYCB here. And for that, I'm grateful. It could not have been easy.

      @@emhu2594 Yes, it's very very painful. So many out there for centuries who have used women, but...at the same time...created works that break boundaries and move people tremendously. So I can't throw his work into a bin. I think he was a tortured soul, but also a predator, yes. I have a difficult time with him. Even when critics would go on and on about his "Muses" I suspected more was happening. I had the same issues with the recent mess with some male dancers - Amar Ramasar and Chase Finlay. I loved them both. I always cheered Ramasar. I was heartsick when I heard what he had done. . I was in the audience for his farewell performance but I had no idea whether to applaud or sit on my hands. He is so gifted. But I also want to knock his head against a wall. And it wasn't just these men. It was all over the art.Many arts. I find this very difficult and heartbreaking. I love this art form and I am glad that women are taking leadership roles in forging new paths in it.

    Let’s try again NYCB, with new leadership announced for this company why not begin with a new video that doesn’t discuss the abuser who has hurt multiple women throughout his years as the former artistic director? Take down this video and other videos that feature men who hurt women, maybe that will help to demonstrate that NYCB really is ready for change.

    • @thehappyelephant8868

      I agree that what these men did was HORRIBLE (especially Chase Finley my gosh what a sicko, he and Amar even sound like creepy players on the NYCB videos) but I do not think that their entire history should be obliterated. I mean we still talk about Balanchine and perform his ballets even though he was notorious for how he was sexually active with many of his dancers and would decline them roles and promotions if they didn't comply. There have been many people in history who have done great things: both bad and good. We should not accept awful behavior but at the same recognize that in human nature there is a mix of both good and bad; do not judge someone entirely on what was wrong with them. I think we should appreciate the beautiful art that these men have already made and just not praise them as people or allow them to continue in their roles.

    • @marysheeran519
      @marysheeran519 Před 5 lety +5

      @@thehappyelephant8868 A most painful thing is how to view people whose work you have loved, who are in fact geniuses, but whose private behavior is something you cannot accept. It is truly awful. I loved Martins' dancing, and however you view his choreography, he kept the company together for decades when everyone expected it would die after Balanchine's death. But he also dismissed any principal dancer who had worked with Balanchine. His was to be the voice of Balanchine at NYCB. Now, several of the "old guard" have been invited to the company to work with dancers on ballets they danced for Balanchine. And you notice a difference, a vivacity, in their discoveries. So far as Amar and Chase et al, that too is painful. I "discovered" Amar in the corps and was a prime booster, but it was difficult to watch him rejoin the company. Yet, he was wonderful. One hopes that the idea that women are here to serve men - it's in the culture - starts to disappear but I wonder. STill, how do we view people who are brilliant and yet conduct themselves with behavior we cannot abide? And that, alas, includes George Balanchine.

    So sad about how his career ended. While the allegations were horrible they were not proven even though they very well could be true (at least in part). I think the best analysis on the matter is by a former dancer of his Kathryn Morgan. For anyone interested check out her video. It is fair and honest. It doesn't assume anything about either side of the matter but just states the facts and her and other dancers experience and knowledge of Peter Martins.

There were allegations from so many different women, do you honestly think they're all lying?

      Kathryn Morgan definitely gives off the energy that she had to sleep with Peter Martins to get her job at ABT. Of course she can't admit it. But look at all the trauma and upheaval in her life...she is manifesting victim energy and she doesn't know how to cope with it. It has taken a huge toll on her physical and mental health. I feel for all the victims of this serial predator and hate everyone who enabled him for decades and gaslighted his victims. He is a sicko protected by a bunch of sociopaths.

      @@emhu2594 What on earth are you talking about? Kathryn Morgan does not and has never worked at ABT, and it's unbelievably insulting to claim that she had to sleep with someone to achieve what she has. You clearly have NO idea what you're talking about; you're not a psychologist, and it's extremely hypocritical to say that you feel for all of Martins' victims while simultaneously saying that someone is "manifesting victim energy". If you're insulting Kathryn because you think she defended Martins, go watch her video again because you clearly didn't understand it the first time.
