When last have you walked around PENAL proper? If you are from Penal, but now live abroad do you think the main center has improved, stayed the same, or in need of an upgrade?
I left Trinidad when i was 11, im 45 now, watching this video brings back my childhood memories. Home will always be home. Watching this video makes me want to move back as an adult now. Thank you for this video.

JB, that is an abandon cinema. There were two back in the day , the other one being on Clark road. This one played Bollywood movies, the other played Hollywood movies. I watched movies in both in the late seventies.
Ray, thanks for filling me in. Cinemas were such good place to be back then. Even though they still have them now as multi-cinemas it just isn't the same.
@@JBsManCave with the failure of the agrisector & oil , the advent of big mall shopping, the prevalence and ease of transport, market towns do not thrive. The population may buy potatos but not big ticket items. So stores are really now just sheds
Bertrand, good observation. This is why I always mention in my videos that each area should come up with its' own 'attraction'... something that makes it unique that will invite people from elsewhere to come and experience it.

That was my old stomping ground when I was very young, good memories 😂😂. In your blog, I am looking at today, of course so much has changed. 36 years of change, looks clean and maintained. Houses and buildings are humongous. I went to the Penal Presbyterian School and Church. The two Cinema’s one Indian Sunbeam, and one English Regent was owned by 2 brothers, I worked at the one in Clarke Road Junction for a summer as I lived close by. I get a nice feel of Penal. I was going to ask what time of day you came there because it just seems like a pleasant city. But you answered that. I hope they do some beautifying of the area. I never went down south when I lived in Trinidad but you really encouraged me to go there when I go back.

When I was there in November Penal did look very different. My dad was a teacher in Penal Junior Sec for a long time. Seems like South suffered a lot when the oil wells started being shut down and oil prices dropped. Central seems to be where most of the action is in Trinidad now.
I visited relatives in Clarke Road many years ago. I was wondering whether there was a Hindu temple or Catholic church in Penal. The place seems quite clean. JB you mentioned that the people in the south are friendlier relative to those in the north. I did some job training in San Fernando many years ago and found there is bit of a cultural difference between the north and south. For example, they use words we don't use in the north. People outside big cities tend to be friendlier than those within cities. Thanks for the video. I believe videos like yours will be achived in the future and become part of a historical record
@@JBsManCave Is it possible to do a walkaround the UWI campus? It's a beautiful envronment apart from the buildings. Most universities here in the UK lack that aesthetic environment. Some universities also in the US where I attended university. There are certain trees in UWI that are quite old. I think it's a great place to capture on video

Went i was small growing up with parents going to siparia church on good friday session my dad use to pass throught all around south include penal and it was nice then wow real old fashion then but fir one thing you could stave you akways get food selling to buy and that make penal so special but then that was it till big man now i never come south again and thats was since in the 70s

JB the green house at 14:40 looked very similar to the one in Siparia yesterday. Also seeing the market really reminded me of going to the market with my mom when I was younger. This was the San Fernando market.
A good few Indo centric towns had cinemas and 10AM (on a weekday) Indian movies were a thing. Housewives would have that as a regular social activity. We had one in Fyzabad and I think they had one in Debe too.

The question you initially asked is the same question a lot of us are also asking! Guyana is going big into oil now, hopefully it will be spent wisely there.
@@JBsManCave, Guyana has already gone on the wrong foot and will end up worse off than Trinidad. At least Trinidad has some development but Guyana is being poorly developed. Billions are being spent and they can't show where the money is going. A lot of corruption.

Yes...Regent cinema was my grandfather's and Sunbeam belonged to his brother.
Penal market served Point Fortin, Erin, Siparia, Barrckpore a big circle ...it was a huge weekly event
