It's about a man who is going to be hung because he murdered three people and he told his love to flee because she was going to be hung as well. Then in the end she wears a necklace of rope side by side with him. But they changed it to necklace of hope on the radio for some reason.

Then it says "if we met at midnight in the hanging tree" so they're using the hanging tree as a place to meet up without being seen. And if you had seen the movie you would know that they changed it to necklace of hope so it could be used as a promo for the rebellion.

For those of you complaining about the remix, there is a reason radio stations are playing this version rather than the original. Most radio stations won't play songs with a slow beat so they try to get a more danceable version of a song that will appeal to their audiences.

It gives me chills to think about if this was somehow showed in the books. Imagine it, Snow ordering a remix like this to be made, making it loose all meaning. Making a club song when it is about death, rebellion and sacrifice. It's about what Katniss faced. The pain of the games, and the rebellion that would never heal. And Snow making it a jingle, because he can't have people thinking.

To me its actually a bit funny, a random ‘capitol’ person just remixing the song bcz in the books they’re literally clueless about whats actually happening, yeah its a bit sad but its not that deep that it takes the soul out of it, thats what i felt when i first saw the movies because the way that katniss thought and her perspective and memories about it was what made the hunger games so interesting, and having no narration for the movies also made me think that it “took the soul out of it” but the movies were still great and you can see that even if its different its still good

The first version was powerful, the paused words made me cringe, real sentiment, a man waiting for his love in death, sort of what would happen once the rebellion started, a music calling out people, giving them hope in the moments darkness looked greater then the light, this version is what Snow would turn the rebel symbol into, a dancing meaningless music.

I don't understand the hate about it being too commercial. This song isn't something the Capitol would have made - it's something the rebellion would have made. In the film they already changed the song to make it more marketable to appeal to more people. Because that's what the film is about - the media and how to market a rebellion. The Hanging Tree becoming marketable, getting radio time and therefore more visibility to more people who will hear of the film (and therefore the original song) is a good thing and fits in perfectly with the themes of the film.
