This Is A DISASTER! UNBELIEVABLE AMOUNTS OF FILLER - Shmee's Financial Disaster!!!

  • Shmee150's Porsche 914 really is a financial disaster! This classic car is hiding all sorts of bad repairs and lots and lots of filler! Unbelievable amounts of filler. We are on the road to restoring this abandoned project and didn't expect to see this!
We are at the stage now where the paint needs to go and we need to see what metal fabrication we need to do to straighten the car. Not only is it crash damaged, but it is also bent like a banana. This may have been why this classic was abandoned as a project, and this, along with the crazy amounts of filler is why this is a financial disaster. Nothing we can't sort though!

I think they are mainly focusing on the corrosion they are seeing, who ever did the body work and paint on it previously didn’t replace the door skins or the sheet metal they just put filler over the rust and painted over it.

Back in the 60's before most of you were born, a magazine called Car and Car Conversions i think, took a good looking Ford Consul circa1960, and stripped it. The result was the car folded in the centre, the entire structure having been made by filler. In those pre test days it was common practice....and the results were horrific. Ever since then, i always preffered to buy rot i could see, then repair it. This brings back the devious minds of some people with no scruples. Nice content though.

THIS OLD VW BUS HAD plaster'es edge beading hammerd to a rough shape and i si""t you not cement / underbody seal for a main chassy and the body remined me of this day i had to tell the poor guy he had just bought the most expensive polished freaking lemon on earth .
. the saddest thing to be honest was the thing had a flooked engine [ it ran in 3 of the 4 cylinders but i never had the heart to tell him .
I JUST GAVE HIM A WRITTEN REPORT 3 A4 SHEATS LONG . and told him to take it back . 2 weeks later this guy returned to my garage and gave me a bottle of johnywalker black label .

The big giveaway is that the safety comments come whether the video shows the use of PPE or not. It’s trolling but they would say, “I’m just trying to help!”.

I have a large vacuum dust collector for my woodwork hobby. Attached to that is a big mouth Shute so I imagine that you could have one mounted on a stand that you move nearby to suck the dust rather than putting the health of everyone at risk when the shop is to be cleaned, you’re handling the crap a few times now. What a journey, thanks for sharing.

A family of mice had made a home under the rocker! I ended up getting it bent back to shape on a jig and welded by one of two; ... that's right two people who could really do this in the US at the time; .. apparently. The shifting of these cars is so compromised it ruins the driving experience. I have no idea how they raced them. For me it was not worth restoring, although its modded OEM engine had 210hp and was pretty fun. I sold it, it went to Hong Kong and I DON'T miss it. Prior to the bodywork the 914/4 cylinder weighed 940 kg / 2,094 lbs. After the paint and body work it weighed 1133 kg, 2500 lbs. .LOL

At today's prices, most people simply couldn't afford that much filler on just one car. I'm also concerned at the condition of some of the metal surface under the filler, as it doesn't appear to have been appropriately treated beforehand. What a mess, not to mention lugging all that extra weight around. Looking forward to seeing this repaired properly, the way it should have been done the first time.

An arid/dessert origin car is always the best choice. Canada not so much. The amount of salt used to combat ice in the winter, just eats cars alive. Next time Tim will look in Arizona, Nevada, southern Cal., etc. An "actual" good choice would not have looked so pretty with the paint job and all, but it would've been essentially rust-free.

Too bad you don’t have a separate tear down area or bldg.to keep some of the dust, dirt, etc.off the other cars.great video as always,y’all definitely have your work cut out for you.curious,yo still have your full time day job,or just in the shop.do not understand what possessed people to do all that work instead of fixing it right.the time spent had to be unbelievable to do what they did.great job.just continue doing your thing.😎😎😎👍👍👍

I'm far from a panel beater but even I would be ashamed to have done that work. No excuse at all for that much bog on the panels. This is a good example of why you need an electronic paint thickness gauge to inspect any car you intend to buy.

That is the type of bondo which is used a lot in the states, i had a Black 2.0 4 cylinders and the doors would not shut properly because the car due to rust, had lost its structural integrity and that was in 1992!, i also brought a BMW 3.0 CS COUPE, Just like the orange one they've got in the garage, that was even worse then the Porsche, of course both cars were built by Karmann and there were a lot of rumours at the time that KARMANN was using really cheap ungalvanised steel at the time, still i wish i kept the 914 as it was like a go - cart... endless fun

  • @jeff1176
    @jeff1176 Před 3 měsíci +1

If whoever did that repair had done it right the first time round, it would have been cheaper in the long run. Man hours working all that mud and the cost for the filler it would have had less time and labor cost. I've seen work like that done here in the states. It's been a while but I've seen whole wings made out of the stuff and very little metal.

Acid dip. saves hours and removes filler in a shorter period of time. The bit that gets me is that someone down the line paid huge bucks for a 'high quality' restoration and paint and got totally turned over.

I bet that car will be a heck of a lot faster now with the tons of filler removed... Who does that type shoddy work so we know never ever to go to such a place.
