    The nvidia quatro card connector is for a special cable that splits it into 2 DVI ports. Dell used these back in the day. I have a ATI card that has that same connector and even the cable that breaks it out into 2 DVI connectors laying around somewhere in my retro shit.

      Yup, I have a few of that exact same card and few of the those "splitter" cables in my pile of retro crap somewhere too.
      They existed to SFF machines a dual screen setup. In an ancient time when having 2 flat screens was still more of a luxury than the norm. Beyond that, those cards are garbage lol

    Seeing you play Counter-Strike on Windows XP just hit me straight in the balls with nostalgia.... made me really sad actually. Nostalgia is so bittersweet because it's amazing to see how far we've come thus far in our lifetime but you also have this pit in your stomach missing those days where we got to see the BIRTH of the computers, the internet, and video games and everything was groundbreaking and innovative. I remember feeling euphoria and genuine JOY back then... and now it's very hard to feel that. We've hit a peak now where everything is either an improvement on what we already had or incremental updates.
    I started playing Counter-Strike in the early Beta versions before it became a retail game when it was still just a Half-life mod. For me personally, I still played it after retail and the release of The Orange Box... but quit the whole scene when CS:GO came out. Which is crazy because I used to be HEAVILY into it and my CS clan even placed 16th place in the CPL tournament in Texas back in the day. I literally had times where I didn't sleep for 2 days straight practicing with my friends all night. One I knew in real life and the rest were friends I only knew online.
    I'd stay up all night, go to school, come home and play again and not sleep again. I would start hallucinating I was so tired It was so unhealthy but some of the best memories I have.

    Had a stack of about 8 of these. Inherited them from work. They used to be all running different license servers with a few redundant boxes on standby. It was quicker to not fix a dead server, but to pull the whole workstation out. Replace it with a clone, and get back to work, while the old host is being investigated. We had them stacked 4 machines high. Like a stone age render farm. The cases were nice and solid. We build furniture out of them, upon which we could sit, set up laptops and monitors. They lasted over a decade, being plugged in and running pretty much 100% of the time. Only mechanical hard drives failed due to standard wear, but the power supplies all held up. No bad caps, even though some bulged a bit towards the end. At this point, PC's from the XP era all need recapping. They've all dried up. I have one mobo with a Dallas clock from the Pentium days. Bet it's dead. Sealing a coin cell in resin with a timer chip, is like welding a car's gas tank shut.

    • @blackterminal
      @blackterminal Před 6 měsíci +1

      I have a old Commdore PC with one of those chips. I cut into it and wired a coin cell holder. Though sadly I have not tried to turn it on for years.

      @@blackterminal Hehe. I have a monster dual machine that I built on an Asus CUV4X-DLS with 2x 1.4GHz Tualatins on Korean socket adapters. Since the motherboard is not pin-compatible originally, I wasn't sure if it was going to work. On some forums I read about people running Tualatins fine, but there were few, where they said the board fried. So, I never had enough courage to actually turn it on. It sits assembled, waiting for the day when all of my other retro boxes are dead, and I have no option, but to finally flip the switch.

      @CakePrincessCelestia Před 7 měsíci +2

      Great tool that I didn't know yet - always used WSUS Offline Update. With that you can download all the updates though a portable installer and have them ready on a USB drive for all the Windows versions of your choice. Just run the installer on the machine that needs the updates and it will go though the whole process automagically, including the reboots. Always loved that thing even while having an internet connection, simply because I didn't have to rely on the utterly slow Microsoft servers that would take ages to serve me a bunch of updates and wait for all the hundreds of thousands of update search processes in a row anymore.

    suggestion: invest in a ps/2 keyboard and mouse if you intend to work on more retro machines. and the weird text you see during installation is because the 4:3 video output is being stretched wide on your monitor. its usually a setting you can do on your monitor. if not, a cheap tiny period accurate 4:3 screen can be nice for when you want to try out retro games.

I tried to do the BSEL mod on a xps 410 I think. Dell has some self test or either that I did it wrong. It would not post. So your system might not post either. Worth a try tho.

    Imagine getting WinXP in 2012 and using it until 2019. Wow! And I thought using a CRT until 2014 was weird, which I did. Never was able to justify paying hundreds of units of money for a worse image just to get wide screen and a slightly higher res, which is why I held onto my iiyama 22" for so long. Eventually, the electricity bill was the main deciding factor besides the thing showing that it has been aging for a while with the image quality slightly degrading over time. That CRT's wattage was all the way through the roof given its size.
    BTW you could also have run a repair install to get that preinstalled XP up and running again. That routine was pretty darn solid back in XP already.

    I got a P 390 in like 2014? It was a C2D 2.4GHz + 4GB (4x 1GB). No HDD but other than that it was fairly in tact.
    It was an upgrade for me back in the day, I had athlon x2's and a phenom laying around.
    I knew my dad had a dead system with a Q6600 so I took that CPU and upgraded my PC. Sucks the 390 didn't support higher FSB since those could be "upgraded" with a pin mod/tape. I swapped PSU and threw in a 7870 eventually and then upgraded that to a gtx660. I don't think I managed to get to 8GB of ram on that thing due to money, but I'm pretty sure I did hit 6GB of mixed ram. Good times.
    It was my first system with an SSD too! 120GB! hah, that was always full.
    I'm currently still a bit behind but way ahead. Running a 8700K + 3080ti in my main w/ 32GB. I have a 7900X + 64GB (microcenter combo) built, but it's at my dads house and I live 24 hours away (on plane) currently so I have to see how I can get that here.

    Happens so, that I tend to use my Win XP machine more than my main rig. Probably because I am 52 years old and my favorite games are from this era. And I seriously dislike emulators.

    Just got a similar model for free. Dimension 9200. Swapping in a q6700, 4GB of RAM and a GTX960. Should be a fun XP machine.

      These old XP machines esp the dell ones are cheep as chips. No one is really doing retro xp stuff right now and were in the golden time when everything is cheep as dirt. This will change as years go by because the old socket 7 stuff was cheep as dirt years ago and then suddenly because people wanted to build retro machines got expensive. Sadly this was after many of the boards and compoents are now in landfills. I myself have 2 p4 and a quad duo laying around to mess around with XP and 98. All of my stuff I got for free and saved from ewaste.

    It boggles my mind how this only costs you 46 bucks. Where I'm from, I got a 500GB for a bit more, and it was used. A system like this here would cost thrice as much, plus shipping. :(

    Just throw in an Audigy or X-Fi and you'll be in EAX heaven for ears. Also, maybe, a boot SSD. ;-)
    Using an 8GB GDDR2 1000 Core 2 Quad Q9650 Gigabyte EP35-DS3R 2GB GDDR5 EVGA GTX 750 Ti SB Audigy 0090 PCI based system triple booting between XP Pro 32-bit, 8.1 Pro 64-bit (with Classic Shell Start Menu) & Zorin OS 17.1 retro rebuild myself. (Also with SanDisk X400 128GB & 256GB boot SSDs, 1TB & 2TB WD Black Storage HDDs).
