The man was 45 when he scored the very first Star Wars. At an age when many artists are considered past their primes, he was just warming up.
45 is considered baby age for film composers. Tom Holkenberg mentioned that when he first moved to LA at 45, one of the things that boggled his mind was that everyone thought he was young.
@@DealerCamel I see what you're saying, although some of my favorites such as Elfman, Zimmer, Horner, Arnold, etc... already composed their first popular works in their early 30s. And JW himself was already scoring during the 60s. Perhaps it's the profession itself that deserves more recognition since composers in other mediums tend to fizzle out earlier. Would Paul McCartney had been better off transitioning into making film musicals like Alan Menken in his mid-40s? I don't know.

A conductor doesn't tell the orchestra how "high" or "low" they should play. That is written in the sheet music. What a conductor does is interpreting the score and preparing the orchestra for how it should play the piece that isn't immediately obvious from the sheet music, steering it in a direction so that it becomes one unit, not a bunch of different instruments. Maybe he wants a certain timbre, or specific dynamics and so on. At the performance, he keeps the tempo, and indicates when instruments or instrument groups should come in, or emphazise certain parts. He's like a sports coach that holds the orchestra together, before and during the performance.

He wrote this when he was 43 years old. Old enough to be admired for his willingness to totally buy into a universe which at that point stood in line with all kinds of variations of Flash Gordon. But also young enough to be admired for his ability to create something that archaic.

To be fair, he does know the song fairly well.
They also probably know it very well.
I was in student symphonies in high school and college. I seem to remember that we tried running a piece without our conductor (the conductor would have had us try it as an exercise). Certainly doable, but with a reduction in quality. An orchestra takes up so much space that the speed of sound starts to matter. I can't remember exactly what happened when we tried.
The orchestra stays together is surprising? Really? I’ve played in concerts like this, definitely not at this scale but a conductor is more for the Audience than the people playing, it’s really easy to look at the book that tells you what to do that is literally right in front of you, and if you practiced you don’t need anything but to hear the song from people around you
The orchestra is probably made of fans. They probably learned their instruments on this.
It awes you and attracts you to see the movie.

I watched one of these concerts where audience was packed with kids who were upset and somewhat angry they had to go boring concert. Well orchestra played trick on the kids. They burst out with Star Wars with drums up front and symbols up front and the most exaggerated bombastic Star Wars music ever. Kids loved it! They never get to see how music is played.

I think what's always most interesting to me about this piece is that it's so iconic for the Empire (being retconned as the Imperial Anthem in Solo) but it didn't even show up until partway into the second movie. It's nowhere to be found in A New Hope.

When I was in middle school, there was one year that the school band (of which I was a member) was invited to march in a local parade...a vote was held to decide whether the band would play the Imperial March or the "Rocky" theme during the parade. I was one of the (unashamedly nerdy) band members who voted for the Imperial March but the "Rocky" theme ended up winning the vote. I remember plodding along in the parade and noticing that nobody along the parade route seemed especially interested in the music we were playing. To this day I am convinced that the Imperial March would have invigorated that parade!
So sad. Your school didn't get to experience this Badass song (neither did my school)
