Set in the world of King Arthur, Sonic and the Black Knight is the second of the Sonic storybook games, succeeding Secret Rings. The gameplay twist here is Sonic uses a sword (controlled with the Wii's motion controls) to attack enemies and progress.

The best display of Sonic as a person is in this game. His personality and voice are spot on like a homing attack.
Darkky What he told Merlina was actually pretty deep.
He’s far too aggressive with Calibur at first though. I would have written him to be more sarcastic and passive-aggressive with him, instead of just being a stuck up jerk like that. Also, I would have personally preferred a bit more back talk from Sonic just in general throughout the whole game

@@tracytron7162 to be fair, Calibur was being “aggressive” with Sonic as well. Sonic isn’t a generic “nice guy” and will snap back if someone is being snarky towards him
I randomly remembered that this game was a thing. I spent a lot of time playing it and I don't regret it.

I just realized that at 1:52:10, “It doesnt matter” version 1 starts playing as sonics theme. Epic callback. I miss the times when continuity existed

This dialogue from Sonic at 1:56:20 is the exact reason i will never turn away from this type of character and franchise. Especially when going to slay a Dragon to help villagers that one cutscene. This is the true side of Sonic. Always serious, can be cocky but never gets thrown of by other mishaps which makes him not act serious. He has the heart of a hero showing his care for others andsaving the day by his 'own rules'.
His character is outstanding in this game.

I remember playing this game when I was 13 and it definitely didn’t deserve all the hate it got. Like many video games, the controls took some getting used to at first but it was fun once I got the hang of it. A sword definitely suits Sonic. And can we just acknowledge that Sonic actually killed someone at at 1:11:00?

@@tiruliru1189 I know right? What were they meant to do? Play the whole story of King Arthur and the knights without having a sword with them? Oh BuT tHeY cOuLd’Ve JuSt NoT mAkE tHe GaMe! Yeah, but they already made a first part of the Sonic Storybook games and were planning on making three. They couldn’t have just stopped there. And with the mistakes of Secret Rings they made this INCREDIBLE game and I love it to this day.
The only reason they didn’t make three was that the games weren’t doing well. They just gave up. I’m disappointed really, I wonder what that game would’ve been? People say it could’ve been the Story of Robin Hood. So maybe Sonic was going to be an archer?

@Jeeses99 I agree with you apart from forces. That game was a disappointment and it lacked a lot. If they and got rid of classic sonic and the custom character and focused on sonic and infinite it would of been a hell of a lot better.
Secret rings was also quite good.

Forces has a great story worth for a anime, because it was like a anime plot. The problem was execution and all that talent, work and time was wasted.

I also didn't like how there was barely any 3d parts and the only parts that were 3d it was just running in a straight line and boosting for a little bit and I really like the boost games but wow that was boring. It would work for an anime that was probably what they were going for tbh. The levels needed to be like generations and unleashed combined.

I liked the cinematics in this game.
Fun fact: Mentions of a connection between Sonic and the wind have actually been a thing all the way since the early Archie comics, and correct me if I’m wrong but the first mention of it was in an issue from between 1997-1999, but I remember for a fact that it was sometime during or soon after the fall of Robotnik's empire arc
This conection to the wind was also made in the original japanese dub of Sonic X. At the end of the Mettarex arc, Sonic was described by the villain as "the one that controls the wind".
Yup it's also referenced in Sonic 06 after Mephistopheles the evil hedgehog stabs & kills Sonic Amy or Elise whichever one says they can still feel he's presence in the wind

Lol now I’m imagining Sonic as some kind of demigod or otherwise holding some kind of special control over the wind due to supernatural/mythical events.
One of the better Sonic story arks I must admit. I like how Sonic had his own super Sonic form in this world, let alone that this is one of the few later games that even ends with super Sonic

I swear the story, theme, plot and tone of this game were amazing! Jason Griffith (and the rest of the 4kids voice actors) did a great job voicing Sonic and the characters before they were replaced by the new cast, this is truly a great way to end the Dark Age of the Sonic series
Not really the final game where Jason and the 4kids actors voiced was in the Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, after that Sega’s new cast with Roger and the others made their debut in “Sonic Free Riders”

I love rewatching my old favorite games. This game was so much fun. It was an arm workout in itself. I love the myth of King Arthur and I loved Sonic the Hedgehog so of course this was amazing to me as a kid. Still is.
Sometimes I forget how powerful nostalgia really is, but this game does not have to rely on nostalgia to still be one of my favorite games, like some others do.

This game was honestly one of the best games I’ve ever played, especially for how old I was 10, and now I’m 18 and about to graduate… it feels good looking back at this game. It was really something else
Sonic: Merlina, every world has its end, I know that kinda sad but, so that's we got to live life to the fullest with the time we have. At least that's what I figure.

The last time Sonic was cool was this game, his personality is great in this, he's cocky sure, but he knows when he has to do things, after this Sonic became annoying and arrogant, hopefully Sonic can be a good character again

@kian7406 You're correct. The Pontaff era generally character assasinated Sonic the Hedgehog, amplifying his flaws while downplaying how heroic he can truly be.

This game holds so much nostalgia for me. This was the first game that got me into the Sonic fandom, I used to play it with my cousins. I only today remembered the name of this game, and it’s just brought back so many memories. Sonic and the Black Knight will always hold a special place in my heart.

This was the last canon Sonic game in my opinion. The Sonic games that came out in the 2010’s, they’re non-canon. All those games did was damage the lore, rather than expand on it.
I completely agree. They even flanderized the characters too much and I cringe whenever they speak.
I can't even stand the 2010s characters. Orbot and Cubot were unfunny comic-relief characters (although they are better in IDW and Boom TV), Deadly Six were the worst villains to ever exist, Lyric was a wasted potential and Dodonpa was not good. The only good characters are Sticks, Boom TV cast, and maybe Infinite, but even then they have problems.

This game was sooo close to greatness. The graphics are great, sound is awesome, I like the story despite its simplicity, and the level design and movement was good. The one thing that absolutely tanks it is the main gimmick with the sword, it slows down the gameplay so much and feels so janky. Really wish they implemented it in a different way.

Played this game when it came out. Me and my older brother would have a blast on this. We got this and unleashed at the sametime as well. Really love those days, this was a great game and idc what anyone says, I enjoyed it.
I had both this and Secret Rings and I got Colours later down the line.

este juego si fue genial , aunque era de rieles y sonic iba atras o corria hacia adelante , el control era muy comodo , habia mucha accion porque explotaba al maximo el uso del wii mote como espada , la musica de crush 40muy buena , graficos muy buenos y realmente era un juego que duraba mucho mas de 2 hrs , al jugarlo de 5 niveles diarios y disfrutar cada momento del juego me duro dos semanas , por alli vi que le pusieron un 6 o un 5 pero se merece como minimo un 8 y ademas que se tenga en cuenta a los fans con sus dibujos fue un bonito detalle de sonic team

English: This game was great, although it was on rails and sonic was going backwards or running forward, the control was very comfortable, there was a lot of action because the use of the wii mote as a sword was exploited to the maximum, the music of crush 40 very good, very good graphics and it really was a game that lasted much more than 2 hours, when playing it with 5 daily levels and enjoying every moment of the game it lasted me two weeks, there I saw that they put a 6 or a 5 but it deserves at least an 8 and also that the fans are taken into account with their drawings was a nice touch of sonic team

@@gishgoyim9170 Yes, but honestly, if they had a chance to remake it: it would be now. The switch uses motion controls way better than the Wii did. And also, they can ‘improve’ it since so many fans thought it had flaws. Imo i think this game is perfect, but to remake it on Switch would be a whole experience. What if they’re planning to do their own 3D All-Stars like Mario did? But it would include the three story book games? Including the last one that never came out.
