‘One of our own,’ fatal shark attack claims life of city lifeguard

- On Sunday, Honolulu Ocean Safety, Emergency Medical Services, Honolulu Fire Department and Honolulu Police responded to a fatal shark attack on Oahu’s North Shore.

I was saved by ocean safety on maui, Aloha, to all who dedicate to saving others. RIP.

OMG! This is so tragic. Its stunning in that we rightfully consider our Lifeguards as guardians and heroes. I am very saddened by this though I never met the man. This will while this will be painful for the entire community on O'ahu and well beyond, he obviously set a great example of how to live with and love the ocean.

Damn. I knew Tamayo when he was a little kid! LIke, little-little. We lived in Punalu'u next to Kaya's store, and Tamayo and his mom and dad lived in the same little cluster of houses we did. It was like ... out of the houses maybe 1-2 had a working telephone at any given time. It was very humble times back then.

No one ever said sharks won't attack if left alone. Who's messing with sharks? Most people are attacked swimming or sitting on a surf board with no idea there is a shark below them.

If they actually are it's likely because there are more and more people enjoying the ocean and there may be more and more sharks as protections have been in place for some time now.

I personally saw a 9ft tiger shark in the waters off Kahuku Pt. swim toward Malaekahana Park in 2002. Sharks are everywhere. Some people are lucky while others not so.

I remember talking with Tamayo while waiting out in the lineup at Pipe one afternoon. He told me, “I’d surf Pipe third reef any day over a big day a Teahupoo.” He told me that he had a major wipeout where he almost died at Teahupoo. RIP Tamayo.

I've been making it a habbit to thank our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for EVERYTHING. Recently in Episode 7, of The CHOSEN, Jesus ressurects Lazarus. The Show is a show mind you, but it hasn't strayed to far from the original script. Anyway, Thomas has become very upset by this miracle, asking "why?" and the way Jesus then explains it to him, I feel is somewhat of a fitting response. Basically God's ways are higher than ours so, it would be difficult for us to understand using our human brains. We just have to believe and have faith He's doing all that he does for our Good, because he loves us ALL. And because He is Good. AMEN
I thank God the Father of creation for sending Jesus, I thank Jesus for enduring what He did on the cross for ALL of us unworthy sinners, and for sending the Holy Spirit, and I thank the Holy Spirit for never leaving us, and staying with us to help discern God's TRUTHS. I thank Jesus because, He, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one, and Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.
I don't know how else to explain it, Jesus is the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, the one we call the ALMIGHTY. So I will continue to THANK him for everything, because that's why, what, and how I believe. I pray it doesn't take a life or death situation to start developing a real relationship with Jesus, but for some, that's like the only way seemingly, but regardless of how often we break His heart day in and day out, He's always gonna be there, amidst it all, and no matter how far we think we have strayed, He's willing to forgive us, and lead us back in the right direction, because He is the Good Shepherd, always tending, and ever mindful of His flock.

Nah....I think it's awesome they had her cover this because she personally knows him, and the community. Her reporting gave this story so much more of an inside look at the whole situation, in a very personal intimate level. I liked it, and appreciated the DIFFERENT approach, as opposed to just a cold out of touch reporter stating the facts.

I witnessed a shark attack on Kona (it's on the Discovery video). The shark sign went right up. There were no warnings from the hotel about how to avoid sharks, and there were a lot of turtles there. And shock of shocks they ignored the area being roped off, like sharks care.
Unconscionable they don't at least educate people. My friend who lived there said when they stopped doing bomb testing in those waters the shark population grew like crazy. But that isn't good for tourism.
Prayers for this man, he lived as he loved and sometimes the good die young.
