  • MEGAN DOES PATTAYA - Golden explosion gives us famous attraction in Thailand - Fabulous 103fm
Set in beautifully landscaped gardens, surrounded by open pavilions and ponds, the Khao chee chan buddha image was completed in 1996, it stands as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coronation of the late King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as King Rama 9.
As the largest carved Buddha image globally, it mesmerizes visitors not only with its sheer beauty but also with the fascinating story behind its creation.
Construction began on April 24th, 1995, with the shaping of the cliff's surface through controlled explosions to provide a suitable canvas for the carving. Once the surface was completed, laser beams guided workers as they meticulously traced the Buddha's form onto the cliff face. It took around 2 weeks for the workers to abseil down the cliff at night, following the laser beams and drawing a white spots in a line with plastic paint. They were then connected into lines during the daytime.
Once the painted lines and the shape of the Bhudda image was completed, the carvings were then done using concrete saws and explosives to create the deep grooves. Next, the grooves were filled with white cement and stones to form white lines on the cliff. Upon completion, the white lines were not clear, and the Buddha image couldn't be seen. The current King of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, or King Rama 10, then suggested the use of golden mosaics. Each golden mosaic piece measures 2x2cm and offers a radiant shine to the image from miles away. Once decorated with a golden mosaic, the image was then coated with a chemical epoxy solution, to save the beautiful image from weather damage.
Khao Chee Chan is located just off Sukhumvit Road, close to the Silverlake Vineyards, and is open every day from 8am-6pm.
