  • Her destiny made headlines around the globe: 1998 abducted on the way to school, Natascha Kampusch had disappeared without a trace. On August 23rd 2006, eight and a half years after her disappearance, the 18-year old girl succeeded to escape from the prison of her torturer Wolfgang Priklopil. Ten years after of her dramatic escape ORF presents a new documentary, following Natascha Kampusch on her difficult way back into a normal life. 50 minutes consisting of exclusive interviews and touching archive material as well as intimate scenes of her private life allow the viewer to sympathize very closely her attempt to fight against conspiracy and hostility. "During the past decade, I only felt free in a few moments. After I've returned home from captivity, I returned into a life in prison - a prison full of judgments and convictions." ORF's Chrstoph Feurstein has exclusively interviewed Natascha Kampusch, her family and friends., gaining insight into her daily life and accompanying her during her riding lesson, at work at a goldsmith and her return to the place of her captivity - the house of Wolfgang Priklopil - for the first time.

    If I was a victim, I would never do interviews. People will say terrible things. Of course she developed a relationship with her captor. He took her when she was a child. He was the only person she communicated with. People criticizing her because she lacked emotion. Her captor made her that way. He would get angry with her if she cried. This women will never be able to escape what he did to her and he’s dead so she can never tell him how she really feels about what he did to her.

      her story shows that whatever you do, haters are going to hate. It's the reason why so many women and men who are survivors of abuse/rape don't come forward. Because if you cause a big scene, cry, get angry, etc. people say "he/she is too much. Tone it down! Stop complaining!" But if you don't show your emotions, people don't believe you or think you're messed up... It's an impossible situation to handle, especially when you're in such a vulnerable position, where you couldn't possibly have the energy to defend yourself.

      People always want someone to blame, some way to find fault, and someone to ultimately punish. The kidnapper killed himself and thus denied people an opportunity to dole out that desired punishment, and so a certain subset of paranoid, conspiracy-minded people (Like Il Tenore in this thread) will then turn on the victim and try to find ways to blame and punish them. Multiple investigations have tried to find evidence of other culprits/perpetrators/partners/compatriots, and have turned up jack-fucking-squat. Give. It. A. Rest. Grow the hell up, and let Natascha Kampusch live her life in peace.

      I remember a group of journalists one time, debating about the possibility of her having been pregnant while she was captured. She didn't initially open up about having been raped (obviously because it's super hard to talk about this), but people always speculated that it must have happened, because what other reason what someone have to keep a young girl in a cell? Police had found a string of hair (that later turned out to belong to Natascha herself), but at the time people thought it could've been from a baby... So they assumed the baby must have died and debated whether she had a part in killing it.... which is sooo immeasurably offensive! (Even if there had been a child and it had died, she couldn't possibly have been held responsible, since she had no control over her own life, let alone that of another human being). What puzzled me most about this group-tear-down was that it was a woman who did all the victim-blaming and a man defending Natascha. I learned there and then that being female doesn't automatically make you an ally and that it doesn't even necessarily mean you understand her circumstances (oppression, physical and sexual violence, starvation, physical weakness and various kinds of abuse etc.). People are either compassionate, or their not, but it doesn't really have that much to do with gender. However, it was still shocking to witness.

    5:01 Natascha briefly smiles as her friend recounts the feeling of missing her after she's been taken. i saw that smile, and i saw it quickly dissipate all in the same second because she spent so many years locked away wondering if everyone had forgotten about her. that was a brief moment of recollection that people wouldn't just "forget" about her.

  • @valhalla1240
    @valhalla1240 Před 6 lety +179

    You can see that a lot of what she does now, in order to heal, has to do with a bit of a rebellion against all the rigid rules she had to follow under Priklopil's regime. Being able to move freely in his house, touch whatever she wants to touch, sing loudly and make noises, experience her body in a self-fulfilling way, eat what she likes, etc. She's constantly breaking through the bondaries he set for her, which seems like a great way to compensate for the developmental arrest he caused her. She never got to spend the formative years of her life to actually shape her own self and she's kind of still discovering who she is, beside him. It's a necessary tool to build a strong sense of self to overcome this traumatic past. She needs new, diverse experiences to look back on, in order to not be forced to simply identify with the captivity and obedience that wasn't really part of her, since it was forced upon her and not her choice. I think this is really clever and a lot of people that have gone through traumatic experiences in their childhood could make good use of this.
    one other thing: reporters really need to stop referring to rape as "sexual approaches or contacts". There is a fundamental difference! If it's not consensual, it's rape. I take personal offense in this ignorance!

  • @reineshadow
    @reineshadow Před 6 lety +164

    Seeing how people reacted to her being strong despite her experience enrages me. Just because she's not in a puddle of tears, people thought she was lying, and was even part of the scheme. Just because she didn't fit the proper mold society thinks a victim should be in, she was judged and humiliated. They are no different from her kidnapper; only in the guise of freedom.
    I am so inspired by this woman. I only saw her story today, and I am amazed at her inner strength even in such a tender age...and now that she's an adult, I still admire her resilience despite everything that is happening around her and the stigma society has placed on her head. Good job, Natascha.

And the aftermath shows us she's strong in a sense that she is attempting and trying to cope. She's getting help and trying to get better. That's inspiring and that are sign of a strong person. I don't see where you're coming from with all that, because all in all is the focus on Natascha and the fact that she's still with us here today, getting better by the day, and she's out there making a difference and telling her story.

    She was kidnapped for 8 years from a young age. Its not like she had a sheltered childhood then suddenly went through some traumatic event and is being interviewed the next day. What happened to her became her life for eight years. It would've become rather normal for her. Why should she be a mess. I'm not downplaying what she went through. It must've been hell for her but all the people thinking she should be in tears don't seem to realize that she's had eight years under him where it probably started to feel normal. Probably even developed some complex bond with her captor and maybe even cared for him somewhat so her memories of those eight years wouldn't all be hell. If she didn't snap and kill herself during those eight years she sure as hell isn't going to be a blubbering mess ten years on. During those ten years her kidnapping is probably all anyone thought about when people met her. She would've told this story a lot over the years to a lot of curious people. She's not going to break down in tears every time she tells it.

    I mean, she did, but how was she supposed to learn a healthy way of dealing with food when she was in constant fear of hunger from 10 to 18 years old? The same for emotional coüing? How was she supposed to learn a healthy way of handling her emotions when she was locked up in a basement for 10 years and got beat up by a psycho?
