My worms love lettuce. Usually first thing to go. Very nice outdoor bin. It's nice to have somewhere to throw excess waste that piles up in freezer.
Traci Tekancic my worms love avocado 🥑
Love the video. Always the best! Stay well my friend.
Great video!
Watching you munching thru all this garbage is weirdly satisfying :P
Right? Same. As a kid I would have never imagined that when I grew up I would enjoy this stuff as a hobby haha. Guess we've learned to enjoy the small simple/small things? 🤷♂️
I like to turn these videos on when I’m falling asleep. Very soothing.
Great video! I see a garden in the background. I would be interested in learning about how you use the finished castings in your garden and also how you prepare your outdoor worm bins/compost bins for the winter.
I use my finished castings to make potting mixes & more recently I gave all the plants in my garden a top dressing of vermicompost. I also gift some of my vermicompost to friends who have gardens.
As for my outdoor worm bin, I always wanted to take some time to pick through my video collection to make a playlist of all the videos featuring the outdoor worm bin, from its creation all the way through to its harvest exactly 1 year later. I invite you to check out that playlist here: czcams.com/play/PLMXQWDlzK6p9-4kBGu5IOJ-72JALKmWwH.html This does not include any of the newest videos showing the outdoor worm bin since it was relaunched (version 2.0) about 7 weeks ago... Perhaps I'll begin a playlist about that bin too - but for now that's just a maybe.
Anyhow - thank you for watching!
Another great video and as always, thanks for sharing!
We have had a lot of issues with slugs the last couple weeks . We have had quite a bit the last couple weeks . Before that we had nothing.
Hopefully the two I saw aren't a sign of more to come. What kinds of issues were you experiencing?
🇹🇷👍
When will you be going into the ENC bin with a count? Would love to see yhe reproduction rate over the months.
I wasn't really planning to empty the flow-thru system that the ENCs inhabit. I thought about eventually doing a harvest of the castings which simply consists of opening the hatch at the bottom of the bag and pulling out some of the finished castings. If I wanted to get a count of all the worms in that container, then some other approach would be necessary; an approach that requires emptying the entire contents of the bag and then separating all the castings from the worms. Thanks for watching!
So the worms crawl up the tub to get in? Or is the bottom cut out?
The compost bin has a number of holes on the bottom which is where the worm must be entering. Thanks for watching!
How do the worms get in there did you put holes in the bottom 🤔 😳
There are holes on the bottom that wore through over years of use - and it must be through those holes that the worms entered :)
Where do you get your worms from? If you know a good way to catch wild worms for composting bins I would love to hear it
Until recently all my red wiggler came from someone who gave me a tub of them back in 2017 - where they originally came from I do not know. Then I noticed how many wild worms had made their way into my outdoor composting bin... so I have been extracting worms from there to populate my outdoor worm bin. My nightcrawlers I got from The Crazy Worm Lady as cocoons.
I recall seeing a video here on CZcams of somebody who visits a stable where all the manure is collected & piled up in a single spot. They were able to get tons & tons of worms by picking through the manure.
Thanks for watching!
@@A-V Thanks for the info, another thing I noticed is in a lot of your videos the food is frozen. Is that just to preserve it until you're ready to feed or does the bin somehow benefit from being fed frozen food?
Yes, freezing keeps the kitchen scraps from spoiling.. allowing for a nearly indefinite time in storage. Although leaving it to begin decomposing might actually help it break down more quickly once it is fed to the worms. However, by freezing the food it also results in the materials often breaking down more readily after thawing out. I suppose the other plus to freezing is that it ensures that no unwanted bacteria or pest make their way into your worm bins. There may be other pros & cons but hose are the things that readily came to mind off the top of my head. Thanks again for watching!
