    She really sells this song live with 100% commitment and skill. It’s a great song anyway but her live performance…wow.
    If you haven’t seen it already you should watch or react to her cover of ‘La Rondine’, her deceased father’s song from the covers night at San Remo. It gives another side to what she’s capable of and it’s truly stunning.
    Queen of charisma; Angelina Mango.

    It weirdly reminds me a lot of Stromae? Which is an amazing thing!!! She could definitely win the whole thing, it feels very modern, it can cater to all generations with its reggaeton vibes and she has an amazing vocal. I am so confused about how Ukraine can be above this masterpiece. The structure of this song is so complex yet easy to listen to - truly genius. I wish Angelina a win because we rarely get something so unique, especially coming from South Europeans that rarely serve a modern folkish sound! And without any staging, she is like a magnet - you just look at her fully mesmerized! I actually think this is the least divisive entry yet, all the reactions are utterly positive and I can't see her being outside of the top 3. So far no one else is even close to me, second place being Norway💅🏻

    actually, her mum (Laura Valente) is also a successful singer and Angelina's brother is a musician, too (that's some DNA she's got there). Valente was the second lead singer for Matia Bazar, who represented Italy at Eurovision in 1979, then still with their original lead singer Antonella Ruggiero, though. Both her mum and her dad took part in Sanremo .

    Loved the analyses of the braids and al the possible metaphors you found for it. As a girl that has always had long hair I wanted to add that when I'm bored, or zoned out, I start braiding my hair, over and over again, lol. Anyway Angelina has often her hair braided, it's a bit of something iconic of her and them being kind of extra has also to do with her "gipsy" style, so I wouldn't be surprised if she showed up to Eurovision wearing something a bit crazy and over the top (colors, prints, ex..., but still with an elegant cut and fit), how she did all week in Sanremo wearing Etro.

    Very similar perspective as me - I LOVED both the women in this year’s Top 5, they felt like such fresh entries, totally different from “handsome classy emotional man” Sanremo. It could do really well, so catchy. Juries tend to have a lot of goodfaith towards Italy by default, so sending a catchy song that could do well with televote is such a no-brainer. The only thing I’m worried about is staging. I know Sanremo is very limited in what staging is possible, but Marco’s staging last year didn’t help him at all, the trampoline guys did nothing. This is the kind of song that NEEDS amazing staging.

You should also watch her cover of her father's song LaRondine (keep Kleenex near): she said she wanted to paid homage to him but she poured her heart out and you could feel it even if you don't know the lyrics (but you could search them on the web just to cry more 😅).

    I am sooooo happy she won but if we look at the Sanremo televote Geolier got 60% which is a record! Normally I am thinking the televote should be what counts the most (the reason I thought Kaariya should have won last year), but this time I don't agree with the televote at all. So today I have to say thank God for the jury vote. I guess there will always be a discussion about jury vs. televotes.......

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 4 měsíci +8

      yea, Geolier had support from all around the country, but there was no doubt that he was getting a disproportionate amount of support from Naples, and it felt partisan. It doesnt sound like much, but even a minority can influence a televote massively if they are laser focused and united.

    • @a.m.rifkia.3rd493
      @a.m.rifkia.3rd493 Před 4 měsíci +3

      this is why 50/50 is still the best system for Eurovision, and same for the national finals (or any other system with similar-portion ratio such as 33/33/34, even though Sanremo is not necessarily a national final show).

    • @Shalalacls
      @Shalalacls Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@a.m.rifkia.3rd493that could be true, except that Eurovision nips partisan voting in the bud, so something like this, where the juries save the integrity of the competition, wouldn't happen in Eurovision! And since the televote is far more consistent with the audience's tastes than the jury, I still think ESC should limit the influence of the juries.
      (I'm Italian, so I can tell you that Sanremo has almost always worked with the mixed juries system, but 90% of the time jury votes don't completely uphend the preferences you hear from the people... Except this year, which was more about *a* people than *the* people)

    • @eimante3000
      @eimante3000 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ESCTomyou have a good point, but it is not completely true in this case. Geolier is very famous among teenagers all over the Italy, not only Naples, he has made a lot of sold out concerts already, meanwhile Angelina Mango is a beginner who was voted by the part of jury mostly ('sala stampa' only, because 'sala radio' was more consistent. There's a lot of discussion why most of jury on the final night gave 1 point for Geolier and 10 points for Angelina Mango. There is a huge cultural gap regarding this votes, mostly because Italian dialects, especially napoletano (Geolier sang in napoletano) is snobed way too much among 'well educated' italians. Unfortunately the sabotage of sala stampa against Geolier influenced a lot the results not only for him but for Annalisa too, who became third in the final ranking.

    • @scully8950
      @scully8950 Před 3 měsíci

      @@eimante3000 It's NOT TRUE, both juries have always given low marks to Geolier even before there was the televoting scandal linked to him.
      On the first night the press jury placed Geolier 23rd out of 30 singers.
      On the second night half of the singers performed and Geolier was 8th out of 15 singers for the radio jury.
      During the covers night Geolier was *26th out of 30* for the radio and *28th* for the press and won only thanks to the mass votes of his fans.
      On the final night Geolier entered the top 5 finalists thanks to the scores accumulated the previous nights and was *4th for the press and even 5th for the radio* !
      Even the "giuria demoscopica"(i.e. a representative sample of Italians of all ages, genders and regions of origin) placed Geolier in the last places, *20th* , even if this year their opinion was not used to decide the winners of the festival.
      Angelina, on the other hand, was consistently in the top three positions every night for *all* the juries and received the most votes of all, only Geolier surpassed her in the televoting. And she was the singer *everyone talked about the most* , the one who had the greatest growth in social media, showing the public's enormous interest in her.
      There has *never* been a time when the Sanremo juries considered Geolier's song and performance decent enough to win!

    It's so interesting hearing you react to and analyze this song!
    One thing I want to note, though, is that this lyrics wasn't written only by Angelina, but also by Madame. They cooperated to write it, basically. Madame is a young and peculiar artist in Italy. She took part in Sanreno twice, so maybe you've alredy heard of her. Her writing style is super recognizable, and from what I can tell knowing her style she put a lot of herself into this song too.
    Madame's partecipations in Sanremo were in 2021 with "Voce" (it's a sort of... love song addressed to her own voice? The lyrics are quite unique) and last year with "Il bene bel male".

    I just wanted to point out something: at 1:11 you say that Arisa refused to go to Eurovision, but that's not the case at all. The right of first refusal for the Sanremo winner was only introduced in 2015, back in 2014 the selection was completely internal and Sanremo had nothing to do with it and from 2011 to 2013 we had an internal jury pick a song from the Sanremo lineup, coincidentally Marco Mengoni won Sanremo in 2013 while also being picked for Eurovision, but the two things were not related. Arisa has actually stated multiple times that she really wants to go to Eurovision and it's one of the reasons why she keeps submitting songs to Sanremo every year.

    Great song! I’m so happy she won, the jury made the right decision. Geolier won over 60% of the votes, while Angelina and Annalisa won a combined total of 24% 💀 so we still haven’t really beaten the patriarchy at Sanremo lol.
    Still, I’m a bit gutted for Annalisa. I really, really think Sinceramente would have been a contender for winning Eurovision. It was super catchy, slick, elegant and had an epic quality and I think it would have done really well with both the jury and the televote. So frustrating that we will never get Annalisa at Eurovision, she absolutely is a Eurovision winner level artist.
    Angelina will do well regardless, but I don’t think it’s a contender.

      @@ESCTom To be fair, gender issues had nothing to do with it in this case. The reason why Geolier received so many votes is that he brought to Sanremo a song in neapolelitan dialect and in Naples he's considered one of the new big representatives of their music. Now, Naples is the absolutely most patriotic city in Italy (if you ask them, they'd tell you they're neapolitans before being italians). So, neapolitans mass voted for him (apparently, even doing things like buying multiple SIMs to give him more votes or offering discounts in restaurants if you voted for him, which is kind of illegal). Still, Geolier's song was good enough that maybe, if he won Sanremo, people would have still believed that he was voted for his song... if it wasn't for the "night of covers and duets". The "night of duets", "night of covers" or whatever you wanna call it, is the Sanremo night before the finals. All the partecipant singers, instead of singing their own song, sing covers with other guests. Geolier's cover wasn't the best at all, I wouldn't even placed it in top 10, and yet he still won. People in the theatre got angry and booed at him (it was a bit too much, but they made clear that they didn't agree with the results). And the winner of that night wasn't decided only by the televote, televote had only 34% of value. It was supposed to be mostly decided by radios and journalists. So, that was a signal that Geolier had been unfairly mass voted. In the finals, journalists and juries decided to mass vote another singer to contrast that, and they chose Angelina. Angelina received a lot of votes from the televote too. That night so many votes were sent, whether they were for Geolier of for other singers to beat Geolier, that the the televoting literally crashed. It was a wild night. And this is why Geolier lost even with 60% from the public vote in the top 5, while Angelina had only 16% (more than the other singers in the top 5 though, which had around 8%). Juries mass voted for Angelina.
      At least, that's what I know. If I was inaccurate, someome please correct me. This is quite a delicate topic.
      About gender issues. Usually, female singers don't lose because they are female. I think it's partly because girls partecipate in televoting more than guys, and they usually vote for male singers.

    • @Shalalacls
      @Shalalacls Před 4 měsíci

      @@roca7268 yeah, that's more or less what happened. Basically the vote would have been rigged regardless, cause the song didn't deserve to win but Neapolitans really don't give a fuck about that 😂
      The best part is, if they hadn't pushed so hard on Cover Night, they wouldn't have given the game away and wouldn't have gotten the backlash that caused the jury to be *this* unfavorable to Geolier in the final... They might have even managed to get him 1st place.
      The point is, every year Sanremo is a damn cultural civil war 🇮🇹

    As an Italian, I was also disappointed with our representatives in the last few years, with the exception of Mahmood (2019) and Maneskin. But now I've got Italy third in my ranking! I'm still skeptical about the staging, usually our stagings are very straight foward with just the singers. Maneskin had obviously the whole band on stage, so there was a dynamic between them. But I'm still embarassed about last year's staging for Mengoni (what was the purpose of the two jumping dudes?!). I feel Angelina's song really needs some dancers, let's hope we don't mess this up.
    I also wonder if the cumbia sound could attract some Latin America votes from the Rest of The World vote.

    Hi Tom.
    As an Italian who's been following the Sanremo festival since 1981, I'm a bit astonished by all this talk of "Oh, wow, a woman won Sanremo".
    I realise that for you who follow it - for ESC reasons - only in the last decade you have seen almost only men win.
    But this is certainly not out of sexism, it's completely ridiculous just to think that.
    For example from 1997 to 2003 women had won 6 out of 7 times.
    Sanremo has NEVER been against women.
    Just look at the roll of honour.
    In 74 editions there have been 43 victories of men (or groups with male vocalists), 12 victories of mixed male/female couples and 19 victories of women.
    And the first 3 editions (1951, 1952 and 1953) were all won by women.
    So if put into historical perspective the things changes. Thank you.

      @ESCTom  Před 4 měsíci

      i was quite specific in talking about how i think it's due to the televote and these hardcore fans of male artists, and all the examples that you gave there are before the televote era?
      As you said, we've had nine years in a row with a male winner, doesnt that coincide with the televote? and not a single woman in the top 5 last year? even marco mengoni said something about it on the stage

    • @micheleferretto7079
      @micheleferretto7079 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ESCTom There are also die-hard fans of female artists, why shouldn't there be my friend? it makes no sense to think that there are "hard-core" fans only of men. Take X-Factor Italy for example, where the televote has been there in the same period: many winners have been women.... Also, in Sanremo televoting has been around fo ages, if you want I'll try to find out exactly when, looking now on the fly - since at least 2005. But think that back in the 1980s we were already voting through the compilation of paper ballots initially designed for betting on horses that were collected by betting shops (present even in the smallest villages in Italy).

    I have a hard time seeing Italy winning this year. It rather reminds me of a less choreographed version of Cyprus 2018, which I think is how it will end up (top five, but can’t get quite enough jury points to win in the end). That’s not to say I don’t love this ( it’s my forth place after Ukraine, Slovenia and Norway) but I’m afraid it will struggle to get a strong enough coalition to carry out a win. Please don’t kill me!
