    This is excellent! As a kid I remember watching this on a Saturday morning waiting for the programmes to start. I could only see it in black and white though! I used to live quite high up in North Wales and all my friends were jealous that I could watch Granada and wasn't just stuck with HTV!

    I listen this music each morning when I go to work. I'm french and born in 1995, but i'm absolutely fan of Granada. To watch closedown with Charles Foster or Colin Weston makes me nostalgic of times that I've never known, but where TV was better than today. And while I listen this music, in my car across the countryside, I imagine that I'm in the "North-West of England". So sad that Granada does not still exists today (considering ITV Granada is not Granada)...

      Good to know that good times From The North ring true over the Channel, and have to agree, the closedown version is also gold.

      The closedown music is the first i've heard. Fantastic, Mansfield was a genius. Some days ago, thanks to you, i've discovered the fabulous startup theme ! And now, instead ringing from Winter Hill, it's carrying the spirit of the North beyond the seas ! Thanks for this video ! And, if I can ask a question, did you know somewhere I can find more Granada archives than on youtube ? Thanks !

    Composer was Keith Mansfield, a legend in film & TV music composing circles. Also composed a lot of library production music for KPM and Bruton.

    Hard to believe I used to actually turn on the TV five minutes before Sesame Street just to see this start-up! Thanks for taking the time out to recreate this... the music alone has just brought back a flood of childhood TV memories.

      Glad to be of service. Some credit of course has to go to Dave Jeffery (Stupidrubbish) for the IBA cap and the ad video at the end (used with permission of course). Was a simple case of putting everything together all of nearly 5 years back. And you're certainly welcome.

    An excellent piece of music but one which I only heard regularly during the long school summer holidays in the mid 80s. I recall it was played every morning at 0925 hrs following TVam, usually after Roland Rat or Lizzie Webb!
    After the TVam end titles and the "eggcups" ident, there would be a blank screen followed by the announcement "This is Granada" ...and then the music started.
    A lovely job -You deserve to be proud of it. Thanks for keeping this music alive. Its great to have it back!

      Before the former Richmond Hill, the Isle of Man has three ITV stations: Granada in the east (from Winter Hill), UTV in the west (from Black Mountain), and Border in the north (from Caldbeck).

  • @walterkronkitesleftshoe6684

    I never ever realised there was an accompanying tune to open the days broadcasting !!! I was only ever aware of the closedown music with Granada TV's Charles Foster "wishing you all a very good night". Guess it just shows that I was always a night owl and not an early bird. Excellent upload !!!

    This is the only ITV startup theme that I had heard for the first time this year. I can't have many left still to discover. This theme basically feels to me like the past year has been - sometimes quiet, sometimes energetic, turbulent and dramatic. I think I must have played this video about 100 times in the last few months - I like the theme that much!

    Am I right in thinking that Granada was the only ITV company who did not have a jingle before their own programmes on the network? From what I can remember, all the other companies did but they did not I wonder? Thank you!

    • @TSWHedgehog
      @TSWHedgehog Před rokem +1

      Border was also without a jingle. This is probably due to their sma size as a company

      @nowster Před rokem

      @@papayapuppy999 You're thinking of the one before the continuity announcement. No, Granada never had a fanfare on the front captions for their programmes, like HTV's Hammond organ or Yorkshire's brass Ilkley Moor Bar T'at.

    That looks like the Authority slide mock I uploaded to MHP in the mid 2000s. I remember getting told I'd used the wrong variant of Clarendon font for the GRANADA logo (wrong shape D). I also rather overdid the unsharp mask shadow effect.

  • @SamHodkin23
    @SamHodkin23  Před 10 lety +1

    LibraryDelights Found it at the time on a TV music site, uploader sourced it from the Granada's own 1/4" tape, the closedown theme is on the same site as well, perfect to play on the iPod before hitting the hay.

      As far as I'm aware, it was simply referred to as the "New Granada Theme",. and it was written by Keith Mansfield. There's copies of this with other bits and some IVC on here, including stuff with Jim Pope attached.

  • @simonguitarman

    Knowing the current Granada owners -ITV have probably lost the music when they destroyed the old quay st studios in central Manchester and moved into smaller studios at Salford quays across from the bbc's media city studios.

    Living in the Ulster Television region, I remember how much of a novelty it was to be on a few family holidays in the Granada region and to hear/see a different start-up routine to what we had in Northern Ireland (though Ulster's music was very good!), and how nice this music was.
    Tell me: did Granada (in the colour era) ever show transmitter information as part of its start-up routine? I can't find that anywhere. I know Ulster (and others) did - they're on CZcams?
    Cheers.

      Yes, they did have a "Transmitters In Service" slide in the 1970s, until it became too cluttered with small relays.

    Pretty good, with one slight error right at the very end... that test card with the girl and clown was only on the BBC, so would not have been used for any ITV regions! ITV's test card was either just coloured stripes or more like the Channel 4 one but with just IBA and no CH4.

    • @grabham59
      @grabham59 Před 5 lety

      Test Card F was jointly developed by the BBC and ITA for the introduction of 625 line colour services. The ITA ETP1 was based on the Philips test patterns (sometimes known as Test Card G ) during 1978, and was introduced in 1979. So entirely possible that this format of start up could have used it...

    • @davidlewis5681

      It's "New Granada Theme" by Keith Mansfield, the composer of the theme tune for BBC's Grandstand. The parts played on what I believe is a xylophone sound a lot like Keith Mansfield's Grandstand theme. Both tunes were written about the same time in the early 1970s.

    Love this music, but the Transmitter announcement is wrong for the time.
    It was always "From Transmitters of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, this is Granada" at the beginning and half way through the music would fade for "all the advertisements on this channel today have been cleared by the IBA and televisions companies in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Independent Broadcast Authority Act and the IBA code of Advertising standards and Practice"
