  • A Winter Walk through Enchanting Luxembourg City: the timeless beauty explored.
It all began with Roman fortifications, as is the case with so many of the beautiful cities of Europe. In the year 963 Count Siegfried acquired a rocky site known as “Lucilinburhuc”: Little Castle. That location became the majestic city of Luxembourg.
The capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg still has some of the impressive military architecture. The natural features help a lot, of course. The city is placed on the top of steep rocks with a deep gorge around it.
It is a land locked country between Belgium, Germany and France. It was once part of Spain and The Netherlands. It has been conquered by the French. Today it is one of the capitals of the European Union, like: Strasbourg, Brussels and Frankfurt.
    The Gibraltar of the North
The Casemates du Bock are a vast network of underground tunnels and galleries. Build by the Austrians. Italian, Spanish, Belgian, French, Austrian, Dutch and Prussian engineers took part in the gradual extension of the fortifications of this stronghold. The first casemates were built in 1644, under Spanish domination. The enlargement of the 23 km long underground galleries took place 40 years later, in the 18th century, under the rule of the Austrians. From the rocks you have amazing views over Grund - a quaint neighbourhood on the lower parts of Luxembourg. And when moving up to the plateau, you can see the bridges over the gorge of this fortified city. This is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The Treveri tribe of the Celts lived here before the Romans came. The Romans named the nearby city of Trier after that Celtic tribe. The Germanic Franks moved in when Rome moved out. And the Franks brought the Moselle dialect to Luxembourg
    The Notre Dame Cathedral
This is the only cathedral in Luxembourg. A Catholic cathedral in the style of late gothic architecture. It was originally a Jesuit church. After the Jesuits had left the city in 1773, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria gifted the church to the City of Luxembourg in 1778. In 1870, it was elevated by Pope Pius IX to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.
    Palace
The Grand Ducal Palace in the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The building was first the city hall of Luxembourg from 1572 to 1795. From 1817, the palace became the residence of the governor, the representative of the Dutch grand dukes. Adolphe was Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 23 November 1890 to his death on 17 November 1905. The first grand duke from the House of Nassau-Weilburg, he succeeded King William III of the Netherlands, ending the personal union between the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
