Forget Marvel and your own language for a f***ing couple of hours. This movie must be watched in OV with subtitles because the 60% of the efforts are directed to the cast.

Alive was ok, but The Society of the Snow, is majestic. They honored and gave voice to the ones that died, and their families appreciated that, some said they felt their relatives were beautifully represented. A few of the actual survivors were in the movie. The actual Nando Parrada opened the airport entrance door to his younger self, his sister and mother. Carlitos played the role of his father (who was very involved in the search) excitedly naming the survivors to the radio host. Roberto Canassa was the doctor who took care of the actor who played him. Etc. The survivors said this movie is the most similar to what actually happened. And apparently they also wanted Numa to be represented as they named him as a big part of the team's motivation for survival and what prompted Parrada & Canassa to go on that last 10 day hike to find help.
Every detail seemed to have been done with genious intent to make them symbolic.
It was also said that the actors spent time with the survivors and families of some of the non-survivors, in an effort to learn more about their characters, and represent them the right way. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets nominated to the oscars.

I didn’t know any of that so thank you for commenting about it! It’s really fascinating to know about the sheer dedication and love put into making this film. I too hope it gets nominated for some Oscars, but sadly Netflix releasing it so late will probably be hugely detrimental to its chances.

@@LoganLikesMovies This movie was based on a different book than "Alive". The author of "La Sociedad de la Nieve" was Pablo Vierci, an Uruguayan writer that went to the same college and knew the rugby players since before the accident. When Bayona read the book, he wanted to bring the story to the screen and give a voice to the ones that stayed in the mountain, and show how the effort of all of them, as a group, made possible the return of the 16 survivors, that's why we truly care for all of them. As you said, the movie is heartbreaking but incredibly beautiful at the same time. Not only the quality of the direction and the acting, and the story itself, the technical aspect is also outstanding: they filmed the mountains, the view, the whole area around the actual place of the accident, and added it later digitally to every frame filmed with the actors around the fuselage, so we see what the group really saw when they were trying to survive, the vastness of the Andes, the kilometers of snow and more mountains, it's not CGI. The whole making of this movie is fascinating, as the care Bayona had to tell this amazing story of survival and strength.

This film was absolutely fantastic. It's really superior to "Alive" and JA Bayona did an outstanding job. The sound in this movie is just nuts, I felt really uncomfortable at a times. Same thing happened when I saw the Imposible as well is like Bayona's special signature. He really likes to put extra effort in the sound department. I hope Bayona and all the team get the recognition they deserve.

I mostly agree with you, except on that I've already watched it twice and maybe I'll give another try because there's so much depth in this movie, so many feelings that arise along their extremely overwhelming experience that I've needed to watch it more than once to figure everything out and I still don't get how could they survive in the middle of nowhere under those terrible circunstances. Two of the survivors, Canesa and Parrado, give lectures outside of their profession. And tell Because they survived. One of them to see his mother and tell her that he was alive. The other to reach his father, and show him that he had not been left alone despite having lost his sister and his mother. They talk about very simple things, but sometimes we forget. It's inspiring to listen to them.

I Really want to watch it again with other people who have the guts to watch it of course..
I have known the story from a long time ago and was shocked by it when I heard that this movie was based on that event I literally went to watch it right away and like you said it is gruesomely beautiful..
I lived in Indonesia, south east asian country which has very warm weather all year round but we have many volcanoes and mountains that are also cold but not in comparison to that Andes mountain cold temperature.. I had experience of sleeping in a hut in a mountain with just tiny blanket that I had to share with friends.. I was cold and couldn't sleep because of the cold.. never in my life that I would imagine, I would be so glad to to see the sun with its warm light since I got plenty in my hometown (my hometown is near the sea so it is kind of hot and I kind of hate it in someway)..
I imagine it would be millions times far worse than my experience to sleep in that cold temperature at night with dead people around you.. and hunger and everything..

This movie deserves an Oscars! This is a cinematic masterpiece, not only because of the aesthetics, art, photography, make-up or script, but because the story is real and truthful as possible....
And may I ask: why no focus on one of THE REAL HERO of the story - SERGIO CATALAN ? The man that found them was Sergio Catalan, a Chilean muleteer. (And this is Sergio Catalan's story). He was moving his animals through the mountain and happened to come across them. He said that at first he thought they were tourists. However, the more he looked at them he realized how poor their condition was. (But) because of the stream he couldn't hear them. So he had to go and get a piece of paper and a pen so the boys could communicate with him. Once he got their message he rode on his horse 10 hours to the closest police station. He said it took him what was left of the day and the whole night to get there and you were right in your reaction. When he arrived they didn't believe him. They thought he was drunk and making it up. However, since he refused to budge and he had the letter they decided to go ahead with the rescue... After they were rescued the survivors developed a really close relationship with him. Some of them said he was like a father to them. When he got sick and needed hip replacement surgery, the boys paid for his medical bills and Roberto helped him get treatment quickly since he was now a doctor. Sergio passed away in 2020 and Gustavo Zerbino attended his funeral in representation of the survivors. He carried his coffin and gave a speech to say goodbye to him. "
There should be a PART II of the Society of the Snow, with the story focusing on SERGIO CATALAN... People may disagree with me, but for me, Sergio Catalan is NOW a member of the Society of Snow - and ONE OF THE HEROES... So, I repeat, there should be a Part II...

As a 13 years old, when i first heard about the story, i was completely shocked, sad, but also REALLY captivated my interest. I wanted to know more abut it, to do more research, to hear the story from the survivors perspective. Despite the c*nn1b@l!sm part of this story, its still not believable how 16 of them survived, how they took care of eachother, etc. The c*nn!b@lism parts really did traumatized me but it gave me a big slap of reality and that young innocent men can experience this tragic story. And i couldn’t help but cry every time a survivor died, it made me so sad, ⚠️SPOILER** especially i didn’t expect Numa Turcatti to die, he was so caring, kind he was the type of person who takes situations seriously yet doesn’t take any risk. But when it comes to his friends, he took the risk when *SPOILER*⚠️ after the avalanche he couldn’t take it anymore so he broke the window seat with his feet, (so that each of the survivors would get out of the snow) but his feet got infected and died soon in December 11.
Big applause for the movie “The society of the snow”. Its really amazing and extremely realistic.

This movie is a 10/5 for all the barriers it breaks through, as well as for layer after layer of good writing, good storytelling, good messages and the faithfulness to the survivors’ testimonies. If this movie makes you uncomfortable, I’m sorry, but too bad. None of us will see a better movie than this for YEARS.
