    An on/off tail button for a rotary dial that gets uncomfortably hot is a necessity. I don't understand why Fenix didn't include one.

    This PD40r v.3.0 flashlight is the direct competitor of the Nitecore P23i.
    The Nitecore "i" series of flashlights utilise a modified 21700 cell, in which the "+" and "-" terminals are present at both sides of the cell.
    In this manner, Nitecore has limited the number of contacts from the "-" of the cell to the "-" of the LED driver. The spring contact, the tailcal/tube, the tube/bezel, the bezel/driver electrical contacts: all gone. Removing all parasitic resistances is very important in a 3000/4000 lumens flashlight powered by a 3.7 Volt battery: the current, in turbo mode, in an hair less than 15 Ampere.
    Now, Fenix didn't want to use a personalised 21700 cell, so they removed the tailcap altogether. Small inconvenience in exchange for using a standard cell: all Flashaholics who complained about the PD40 not having a tactical switch, tell to learn some math (both Ohms' laws) and some engineering of the materials, and then ask the question again.
    The PD40 uses the same LED of the P23i, a Luminous SFT70, capable of more than 3000 lumens of light flux with 6,500 °K colour temperature. The LED is a single dye with four sections, configurable in a series or a parallel, to operate either in 12 or 6 Volt mode. This is one of the most expensive type of LEDs, and this fact is reflected in the cost of the flashlight.
    I believe I'll buy the Nitecore P23i anyway, honouring the root criteria of selection employed by all militant Flashaholics: normal people choose the best flashlight to buy, we don't; we buy both.
    Thank you for your review!
    Greetings from the UK,
    Anthony

    I really like the UI of this light. I would like it more if it was stepless dimming. Thanks for the video.

    Would be nice to test the run times on these lights, some reviews (written, not video) do the run times tests. For example the turbo is rated well over 2 hours, but the actual maximum 3000 lumen turbo output only lasts a few minutes and then permanently steps down to nearly half the max brightness for the remaining two hours and keeps stepping down after that until it's empty.

      Turbo is always (afaik) a gimmick. It never works for long due to heat and voltage drop, and shouldn't be the first rating that hits you as a consumer. High is much more realistic as it usually is sustainable over time. But I guess high numbers sell lights.

    • @MM-qv5lf
      @MM-qv5lf Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@WeldingForJesus Yep, you're absolutely right. Too bad the manufacturers don't include more realistic numbers and run times.

    • @WeldingForJesus
      @WeldingForJesus Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@MM-qv5lf They usually do, but you need to look at the chart, which isn't exactly the first thing they present when releasing a new product. With preciously few exceptions the first thing you see is the turbo output in bold text with an edited picture of a (turbo) beamshot in the background.
      Falling for it once is a human mistake, but the second time we buy a performance light we should know better.

    Yo...when you giving out 3 lights...you said 2 weeks. I'm waiting. Hopefully things will be good. I really want to ask for lights but I'll behave. I really like how dedicated and how much you love lights. Keep up the hard work....❤

    The V2 was the worst torch i have ever owned. Firstly, you could only hit turbo if the battery was 85% or higher and secondly the rotary dial got wobbly. I reached out to Fenix and they stated the 85% was correct. Meaning i got about 2 bursts on turbo. Its was a 1000 lumen torch. Hope they fixed this on the V3.
    Would love to see a 50% battery turbo test on this one.
    Take care bro.

    I bought an older version of one of these for my father years ago. For everyone nitpicking this to death, it is perfect for elderly exactly because of the rotary switch. It does get warm, but it's not any worse than holding a cup of coffee in a paper cup.

      Not to mention that it is way better than a button if you have gloves on.

      I was researching getting this light to upgrade the light I got for my mom. Exactly my line of thinking, simple foolproof interface, very reliable, more output than she will ever need.

      @77surefire Very good light for the ladies and the elderly. Super easy to use and charge. The actual light output is a great combination of flood/throw. Turbo/highest level is useless, though, as it is a barely detectable level step.

      @@cg1288 thanks for the additional information. Looks like a very nice beam with plenty of reach if needed.
      Actually my mom is already kind of familiar with the interface, as I currently have her using a Malkoff MD2 with high/low ring installed so twist to change levels.
