    If your not Irish it’s a difficult song to understand because it deals with the bitter hardships of Irelands Past. But the heart and spirit of the Pogues performances of this song is moving.,👍👍

      I've seen the Pogues twice and Shane with the Popes once. When he was playing with the Popes, he actually stopped mid-song on about the 4th or 5th song into the set, roared all over the stage, mumbled something like "that feels better," and resumed the song.

    "Is this deeper than I thought it was?" Yeah, the Pogues among other punk and folk-punk bands can tell very deep stories with music that just pushes you to feel something, and it can take a few listens to put it all together. There's a way to make art that comes from anger but still feels like a celebration because you survived, if that makes sense.

    I think the Catholic imagery in the song doesn't come out of actual stong religiosity as such...it's more a case that the images and symbols we (Irish catholics) absorbed from birth are often used for artistic or poectic reasons at a later stage in life. This was v true for people like James Joyce etc.

  • @robertwilson973
    @robertwilson973 Před 9 měsíci

    Wow....talk about missing the point. I just found your reaction 3 years later after Shane MacGowan died. Basically it deals with the English violations of the Irish throughout history but it can also be taken literally. Sailors of old were buried at sea, and since there was no grave stone the spirits they wronged could not haunt them. Ireland's soil is sod and that does not break down the bodies of the dead well, etc.

    You should try the track "Medley"..it´s an very energetic song where the people used to sing and dance like crazy on their concerts back then in the 80ties..
