  • We have 3 states of mind: Active mind, Witness mind, Silent mind.
The Active mind is involved thinking, classifying, calculating, responding, reacting, experiencing pain, pleasure, inadequacy, feelings, attachments, fears, actions - it is more looking outside.
The Witness Mind is observing, accepting, looking inside, looking deeper, not judging.
The Silent Mind is where there is peace, stillness, silence and no thoughts.
These three states correspond to the 3 states of our consciousness viz. Waking state, Dream state and Deep sleep state.
All these 3 aspects of the mind are contained in a common denominator something that is larger, that is impersonal and not associated with this ‘I’.
All these 3 states are like 3 waves that arise and subside in an ocean which is much larger than these 3 waves.
The common denominator is the one from which all creation arises and all creation subsides. It has no specific name or form, no birth or death, no specific time or space.
It includes everything - (sampoornam) - it is complete. This is the 4th State.
To experience all this is possible through the 4 state Meditation. This meditation is a part of a retreat that Dr. Rajan Sankaran conducts at Apti, Lonavala.
