    I think the reason you probably had trouble layering the mahogany over the pink is because you had already burnished that pink color into the paper so it physically couldn't hold anymore pigment- could be wrong but it seems you pressed really hard with that pink on the first go around (probably because the crayola pigment wasn't what you were used to? idk) so I think any pencil would have trouble going over that- however I have to agree with what you said about the vibrancy of the colors offered by crayola and the lack of depth in the piece... you could probably also try layering complementary colors over the color u have (so like green over the red/pink) to get more or of the right sorta deep color. I know u usually use prismas but I hope this helps some :)

    • @astrinymris9953
      @astrinymris9953 Před 6 lety +106

      I think I know what Aleja Trochez means. When you color, you use pressure to get rid of the white gaps in the color rather than using a very sharp tip moving in teeny-tiny circles to get color into the paper's "valleys". It's not a matter of having a "heavy hand" or not; it's a matter of using a different-- but equally valid-- colored pencil technique. A lot of hobby colorists use the microscribbling technique, so if these pencils are aimed at the adult coloring market... *shrugs*

    • @daruleos
      @daruleos Před 6 lety +86

      Yes! Finally someone else revealed the problem you have. This same thing happened with the "fake prismacolors" you pressed too hard way too early when you haven't even build depth. You falttend the tooth of the paper (that white dots you call "patchy") Those are important to preserve until you have layed down all the layers because once you flatten the tooth of the paper, it will be nearly impossible to the paper to take further layers. That action is calles burnishing, and that is generally done when your drawing is almost complete because you are almost done and you are supposed to not to add more layers. It is so unfair you named some pencils "bad"because you don't know how to work with them, just as with the "fake" prismacolors.

    • @thefaninmyroom7784
      @thefaninmyroom7784 Před 6 lety +11

      Aleja Trochez lol I think us lefties tend to do that because when we draw/ color we tend to rub off and smudge the pigment.....so it makes us draw heavier so when it does rub off it doesn’t make much of a difference....if that makes sense lol

    Hi Rae.
    I know this is an older video that I am commenting on, but I still feel the need to comment
    So........
    There are a "bunch" of lower end pencil brands that came out on the market for last Christmas's season. I have purchased a few of them, for the sake of trying them. Coloring in one book of 24 pages, using a different set per page, I went to the page with my heavy-handed nature, and burnished straight out of the box. I was looking to see how much pigment was in each pencil brand, and how the wax or oils behave under such conditions. I did some color stacking, and very little layering. Mostly just fill the spaces through burnishing. Some of the pages show that I was enjoying using the set more, and I did indeed shade of layer, in addition to the burnishing, but I tried to keep to the pattern I set for myself. I am going to make a video of the finished pages talking about my personal experiences, and impressions of each set on the paper that was used in this particular book.
    All that giant mouthful said, I am wondering if you would be willing to try some of those lower end sets? Feela, Guanghui, Positive Art, Lelix, and so on. Brands off of the top of my head, mind you. I do like the Feela pencils, and I am an oil based, harder than Prismacolor pencil kind of gal. I am far too smeary with my Prismacolors. I will have to work on that.
    Please let me know if you have done this. I'm usually out of any loop there may be, so I apologize, but I'm really interested in your thoughts.
    Thanx,
    Mindy

    I so love you Rae!
    Your sense of humor is fantastic. I always enjoy your opinions and struggles. I gotta say that the most expensive thing I've purchased, was a full 170 piece set of Touch Five Markers. I bought a 60 piece set, an 80 piece set, and a 30 piece set that I got to handpick each color. A little bit more than the CaranD'Ache product you tried. Yeah.
    Now, I'm using pencils. I started a coloring challenge, and set the rules for myself, and I have been enjoying trying all the "cheap" oil-based colored pencil sets. I have a few sets of cheap-cheap-cheap colored pencils, Crayola, CraZart, Prang, Liquid Mark....just to name a few. I have used each set, even if they were just 24 pieces. Colored an entire page with each set. Using the Positive Art set of 120 at the moment. Not my most favorite out of the oil-based sets. I'm still feeling my Feela 152-piece set, and the Marco Raffine' set of 72. I do want to get the Marco Renoir set of 100, but I'm waiting until the price is a "tad" lower.
    Love your videos! Thanks so much for sticking with it.

  • @tanyahandley3466
    @tanyahandley3466 Před 6 lety +94

    You can't just pack the paper with was then expect it to take more color.... use a clear was and you will see that same thing.. it's not the pencils it is you. I'm sorry. Also using circular motions to blend is better than lines. You can see the lines and it is easier to make a mistake that you cannot undo or cover.

    • @tanyahandley3466
      @tanyahandley3466 Před 6 lety +32

      Also if you look at you page from an angle I'll bet you can see texture and lines from not only the way you blended but also how much pressure you put on your page. I'll bet like 5 pages after this page where indented. You have to be more patient with them, prisma is ok if you are someone who is heavy handed, but for me that didn't have enough pigment. I remember 3 years ago I argued with my teacher about this, she only supplies prisma and I brought my own collection of pencils and used those instead... they consisted of mostly crayola and other odd brands of better quality than prisma. Like you said though, everyone's techniques are different. I don't color.... I make art. That is offensive to say that people who can actually make their supplies work regardless of quality are just coloring adults.

      I use the micro-scribbling method, also. But not everyone does. If Rae chooses not to, it's her choice. Quite frankly, these pencils don't seem appealing even for that method. I like my Polychromos, and I'm sticking to them. ;-D

    When you review any type of pencil (or watercolor, oil and acrilic), make sure you also try each on several types of paper.
    I notice in several of your pencil "review" videos, you seem to always use the same paper (and color). Even the hack blending video. Not much you can judge by only one type of paper no matter what you use to blend with.
    This is the reason I suggested you look up Lisa from Lachri Fine Art. I'm in no way affiliated with her or her brand/channel. I just think you would benefit greatly from her.
    I've been a portrait artist for well on 30 years and I'm still learning. Good luck, and thanks for your time =}

    Instantly demonetized? Great review Rae. I admit I am very excited about this. I feel their next batch will be an improved formula. If they can just get on their game with the same texture with say polychromos for ease of blendability. I always loved Crayola because they are easy to blend out. However the pigment always fails until you start to layer upon layer. With these they are pigmented as heck but the blendability just doesn't match. It leaves a less cohesive feel. I would buy these for my adult colouring books however I tend to do a lot of blending. Maybe with a tortilon or tissue?
