  • Beachy Head forms part of the Seven Sisters National Park and the best stretch is from Eastbourne to the Birling Gap. It's where you will find the UK's highest chalk sea cliff!
    Start in Eastbourne, the closest free parking is on Dukes Drive where there is a Cafe and toilets nearby (Postcode BN20 7XL). Make the steep ascent up the hill where you will be able to look back and see Eastbourne and it's Pier. Keep walking where you can either choose the upper or lower routes which pass a couple of large football pitches which run to the edge of the cliff!
    If you plan on going down to see the lighthouse then check the tide times and you can then use the ladder at Cow Gap to get access to the beach at this point. You MUST check tide times as the lighthouse can only be accessed 2 hours each side of the lowest tide. Depending on the timings you may choose to go down either at the beginning of the hike or at the end on your return.
    Make your way higher to the the First Lighthouse Viewpoint where you will catch you first glimpse of Beachy Head Lighthouse. Continue up a very steep route to reach the War Memorial and you can take a break there.
    Once you have regained your breath continue on where you will see The Beachy Head Pub. You can make a pit stop there if you like. Now keep along the cliff edge path admiring the panorama views where you will be able to see The Belle Tout Lighthouse in the distance. Keep to the path which runs steep in places both up and down as you follow the cliff edge.
    A good place to stop for lunch is either just before the Belle Tout Lighthouse where I've marked the second Viewpoint, or just after where the terrain evens out. Once you pass the Lighthouse it's a gentle downhill walk to the Birling Gap.
    Once at Birling Gap you may choose to take a break. There are shops and toilets there. Make you way down the steps and onto the pebbly beach where you can explore, just be careful when walking on the seaweed as it's very slippery!
    Then you can make your way back the route you came and enjoy the views as the sun begins to set and the cliffs start to turn to an orange tint. If you get tired there is the option to take the ESS Bus which runs all along the main road. This will lead you back to your starting point.
    This hike is rated Moderate/Difficult as there are many steep and slippery parts. Hiking boots recommended if going down to the Lighthouse.
    Enjoy and please subscribe and give your feedback which will be much appreciated.

    I live 30mins drive away and visit Birling Gap every week. This is a *BRILLIANT* video for those either new or experienced 'locals' like myself. Man, I didn't even know about the Cow Gap - in fact, I didn't even know you could get to the lighthouse ! I'm going to find out more and give that a go. Can't thank you enough dude. That was epic.

      I'm so pleased you liked the video! I always try and find interesting routes. Walking at low tide from Birling Gap to the Lighthouse is quite difficult as the seaweed was slippery and I didn't want to walk close to the cliffs. Enjoy the walk :-)

      @traffic71 Před 5 lety +1

      Give it a go. It’s a great walk. Aim to start from Cow Gap just as the tide is going out. That’ll give you plenty of time to walk to the lighthouse and back. Check out the old car wrecks and parts of an old ship scattered at the bottom of the cliffs. Enjoy.

    Always thought the Beachy Head experience better at the bottom of the cliff; far fewer people there. Now decided I'll have to go there and see the sun set! In contrast, I've noted the dreadful Rihanna and her absolutely appalling song 'Umbrella' has hundreds of millions of views on CZcams, and yet you've produced this wonderful video of an inspirational landscape, and only 3000+ people have watched it. A sad reflection on the human species I think!

    • @HarrysHikes
      @HarrysHikes  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes at the bottom of the cliff it's much quieter and you get the appreciate the awe of the gigantic chalk cliffs. You will really enjoy the sunset and the way it turns the chalk orange! Thanks for such a lovely comment, I just hope more people can appreciate the beauty that's on our doorstep :-)

  • @suegardner8995

    This is beautiful but the people getting close to the cliff edge must have had a death wish. Those cliffs are chalk and crumble easily. this is where i grew up and unfortunately have seen people go over the edge.

    • @HarrysHikes
      @HarrysHikes  Před 4 lety

      sue gardner thanks. Yes it’s beautiful, there’s so much evidence where the cliffs have collapsed in the past but people still go all the way to the edge! It’s a great place to walk

      Harry's Hikes Great video for your first one. I didn’t realise there was a Bomber Command Memorial there, I must visit soon! Re the filter, it reduces the flicker from shooting at 30fps so I’ll try it on the next video. Keep flying👍🏻

    Most times i go (for 3/4 days) there is a flypast by spitfire(s) , you have to be very quick to film it , but can hear them coming by the deep throat sound of their merlin engines.Also i walked from birling gap to beachyhead one evening and there was a rnli speedboat down near the waters edge , i went to the cliff edge to see and up pulls a 4 wheel drive rnli with 2 occupants aproaching me asking my name and suspecting me of being a jumper ! -
    :- |, i really didnt need that .

    In June 2016 me and my wife spent our holiday in Friston. It was the week after Brexit election. On a walk at the Cliffs of Beachy Head, the most idiotic thing happend. I lost my wallet with ID, driving licence, all the paper for the car and so on. I became aware in the Evening of that day. So we had driven to the police station in seaford to report it. There was a very kindly female police oficer who helped me with Patience to fill up all the forms. We reported it to the landlords of the cottage. They join in to be present for the police, in case they had news for us.
    24h later, we got the wallet back. Hikers found it at the restaurant neat by beachy head and transfer it to the police station at Eastbourne. The police network do it's police thing and I was able to receive it back even without a scratch on the leather.
    Well it's not a common story of east sussex but if you plan to spent holidays in GB, this region would be a great deal. Because of its pleasant people.

As hikers we tend to appreciate our environment and are mindful of the nature that surrounds us, and that includes humanity. Hope you enjoy more walks and check out my other videos for great places to go in the UK.
