  • The Pentax Auto 110, the swan song system for 110 film, arrived when the sales decline, general poor performance, and cost to value ratio of 110 film made it clear that the format was soon to be obsolete. That said, the camera's engineering and overall system quality demonstrate that the Pentax 110 system can deliver fantastic and captivating results. The Auto 110, the simpler of the two Pentax 110 SLRs, supported by the 110 lens system, presented cost- and size-conscious photographers with a quality system that was easy to carry. This video series looks at the Pentax Auto 110, the Pentax Auto 110 lenses, and describes the features, functions, and uses of the camera. This video series also provides tips on how to easily and cheaply expand your Pentax 110 system to make it more usable and versatile.

    I have this camera from back when it was originally sold, it was my favourite to use back in the late '70s and early '80s. So small and neat and inconspicuous. The picture quality was nice, I managed to get good enlargements too. I had to really argue with the lab to get them to enlarge since it was 110, but the lens quality was so good that it worked OK (obviously not really large, but still larger than the standard size). I went to get my 35mm SLR out to use today and found it in the cupboard, hence looking for information and finding your vid. I think I will have a play with it to see what I get. I was surprised to see you can get film now, I put the thing away back when the main companies stopped making the format. I have 5 lenses, and a number of filters as well as the flash and motor drive. Now I need to work out just what each lens does and how I can use them again. Then I will have to find someone to develop the film. Back in the day I used Kodak Gold, and I found some cartridges in the cupboard - way out of date but maybe it will still work?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 3 lety

      Nice! That's an awesome kit.
      I would not expect the Kodak Gold to work at all. I've tried some of that from the 90s and it's all unusable. That particular stock did not age well. Your best bet is to sell it on eBay (because people like me will buy the old cassettes to break apart for re-use with 16mm film) and pick up some new 110 film.

      @@DavidHancock Thanks for the advice, it would be a shame to pay out for development and find no pictures! There was a part used film in the camera, so I'm not sure whether to finish it and get it developed (I have taken a couple of shots since digging it out, but was waiting until I went on a walk before finishing it off). I didn't realise there was a market for the cassettes, so I will take your advice. Hopefully there will be someone in UK who does what you do.
      I realised this is the 2nd of these that I have owned as I have photographs on 110 negatives that predate the Super Auto's manufacturing date, I must have had the original at one time, and maybe it went to an ex after a breakup, and then I bought the Super in the kit after I missed it! Anyway that was a long time and a number of cameras ago now, but I still remember how much I liked using it as it was small enough to not make a big thing of it when taking a picture, so people were more relaxed allowing better candid shots.

    12:00 or so (ISO Vs ASA) - The ISO standard came about by combining the two most common film sensitivity rating systems of the time - the near-ubiquitous American ASA rating (100, 200, 400), and the near-defunct German DIN system (21°, 24°, 27°). Thus a true ISO rating is expressed as ASA/DIN (eg 100/21°), but with limited room on camera LCD screens, the more intuitive and popular ASA component of the rating won out. So ironically, when people talk about "ISO100," that's actually just an ASA rating. (Edited for typos)

    Saw it at the Photokina, probable in1980, and I got the system one by one. When I went to the local photo store to collect my prints I was told only the Pentax could deliver such good results in 110. Lost most of interest late 80-ties but the Lomography campaign for the Metropolis film made me want to use it again. I managed to get a Super version around the Metropolis campaign and also a Minola zoom SLR Mark II. The latter is bigger but offers more control and is from my point of view easier to focus. Now there’s Lomograhy color negative Tiger film but do not forget to tape the film window due to problems with the backing paper. Even 5x7 prints are acceptable. Really love these little cameras. Thanks for these videos.

      I've done an in-depth review on the 18mm PanFocus already, too, about a year ago. This year I'm planning to release reviews on the 24mm and 70mm as well. They can, with some flexibility in the definition here, hold up on APS-C in some cases. That's a bit more true for APS-C videographers as the 16:9 aspect ratio cuts out most of the image-circle-related vignette.

    I have the Auto 110 with the four most common lenses and it is fun to use -- but as you said, the film/developing is at least as expensive as 35mm. I have an adapter for my Lumix G85 micro-four-thirds camera and these lenses work very, very well for stills and video.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 5 lety

      The lenses are really nice for these. I much prefer these for black and white since I can manage that at home, but color scanning for 110 is really expensive. The scanning is he biggest difference from 35mm.

      @@DavidHancock -- Interestingly, the 110 negative is almost exactly the same size as the micro-four-thirds sensor, but the digital sensors produce much better images than 110 film -- film being what it is. Oh -- I sent my 110 film to The Darkroom -- where I send all of my film, and I'm pretty sure that costs were the same as getting 35mm developed and scanned. The Auto 110 does generate some conversation -- "What DSLR is that?" "How'd they get a DSLR so small?" :-)

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos Před 4 lety +1

    Theoretically the lenses of the Pentax auto 110 camera can be used with an adapter on a micro 4/3 camera because the flange focal distance of Pentax auto 110 isn't two shallow and the size of the micro 4/3 sensor is similar to that of a 110 format film.
    The flange focal distance of the tiny Pentax auto 110 is 27mm and that of micro 4/3 cameras is 19.25mm.
    Of course the Pentax auto 110 lenses can be used on many other mirrorless cameras with adapters like the Nikon 1 mount cameras, the Pentax Q mount cameras etc.
    However that aperture is fixed only to f/2.8 but that isn't necessarily so bad as long as the lens is quite sharp.
    The Pentax auto 100 and super version weren't successful and the same mistake was repeated 30 years later with the tiny digital mirrorless Pentax Q mount cameras.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 4 lety +1

      They definitely can be used on M43, s well as Sony E. I've tried every 110 lens except the 20-40mm zoom, which I don't have, on both APS-C and FF E-mount bodies. The excess coverage the lenses provide is staggering and all of them cover APS-C.
      As for the fixed aperture, yeah, that's a problem. I ordered a microscope aperture and a second 110 adapter to see if I can modify an adapter to have an aperture. On paper it's possible.

  • @guenin
    @guenin Před 4 lety +1

    Hi David, thanks for another excellent video. I've been subscribed to your channel for a few years, but I think this is my first comment. You talk about 110 cameras recognizing two film speeds. From what I understand there is a tab on the right side of the film cartridge which is either long or short. Long indicates low speed and short indicates high speed. This leads me to believe that you can cut the tab down if you want to push the film which is a typical hack.
    Anyway, I just bought some lomo tiger film which is rated at 200 and has a long tab indicating slow film. I’m not sure why you say that the Pentax 110 recognizes it as fast. Maybe you had an older cartridge with a short tab? You say the Pentax 110 meters slow film at 80 which would over expose the 200 film by a little over a stop which should be good.
    Like I said, I just bought some 110 film which I haven’t shot in over 30 years (lol) for a Pentax 110 which I bought not too long ago for the lenses to use on micro 4/3. We’ll see how it goes. Keep up the good work.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you! And yes, you're one of my longest subscribers. Creators can see how long someone is subscribed to our channel and it tells me you've been here for seven years, and my channel is seven years and five months old.
      For the tabs, yup, you are correct. A slow-sped cassette can be filed down to make it a high-speed cassette, but that's a permanent mod. I wanted to touch on that in my recent video about re-spooling 110 film cassettes but I don't know how far the tab filing has to go to make it a high-speed cassette and I didn't want to provide potentially incorrect or incomplete info.
      And yes, I did have some Tiger cassettes with short tabs, but the batch I bought last year also had long tabs and the results were definitely better.
