Alban Berg: Wozzeck "Interlude"

  • Wozzeck is the first opera by the Austrian composer Alban Berg. It was composed between 1914 and 1922 and first performed in 1925. Since then it has established a solid place for itself in the mainstream operatic tradition, and modern productions are consistently sold out. Though its musical style is challenging, the quality of Berg's work (in particular, the characterization of the situation through clearly defined musical techniques) amply repays repeated listenings. Although a typical performance takes only slightly over an hour and a half, it is nevertheless an intense experience. The subject matter the inevitability of hardship and exploitation for the poor is brutal and uncompromisingly presented. Though Berg's musical style is not as violent as some other composers might have written for this story, the style suits the subject matter.

My gosh, I have not heard this in years! Boy, do you hear the Mahler influences in the voice leading (9th and 10th Symphonies), and also in how he scores for the wood winds. Fantastic music!!

The first half was actually the beginning of a student piece by Berg called "Symphony in D minor", which he later incorporated in the opera.

2:45 all 12 chromatic notes in this chord. The three orchestral groups each play one of the three possible dimished seventh chords which results in this super chord. With the A of the Timpani resolving to a D it's basically an extreme dominant.

I've been listening to my recording I have of Wozzeck.I don't understand the German language the singing is in, but I enjoy the music. It's pretty creepy, but that's probably why I like it.

Una musica complessa, non immediatamente orecchiabile. Richiede ascolti.

At the Konigsberg Festival (about 1927?), Wozzek was performed. The lead soprano was Elizabeth Wolff Rothwell. Were there any recordings of these performances? I was told any made may have been destroyed by the German government. Any truth to that?

It just shows how much a movie score composer like John Williams owes guys like Alban Berg (and many others of course). Nothing wrong with that.

Haven't seen that one but that guy and many like him are pretty well versed in 20th century classical music. Of course they all specialize in 4th rate Debussy knockoffs but they can also hammer out pretty convincing atonal and at times even 12 tone stuff when they want an eerie atmosphere
