Hercules DJControl Starlight Review - Good For New DJs?

  • The Hercules DJControl Starlight is a compact two-channel device meant to be used with Serato DJ Lite. It looks similar to the Numark DJ2GO2, except that it’s got touch-sensitive jogwheels that you can use for scratching. It also has lights going around the base of the unit that can sync with the music you're playing.
    We check it out in this full review.

    My boss invited a couple of employees to her house this Saturday. She asked me if I could bring some music and DJ. Perfect for a strip club DJ, rarely mix, daily share a DJ space with another DJ, easy to travel to work with everyday and swapping out equipment with the day shift DJ.. as well as a small footprint, since theres other club business going on. As a 20yr pro DJ, this guy would be perfect.

  • @AlexMoschopoulos
    @AlexMoschopoulos Před 3 lety +3

    I picked one up just to play with MIXXX and stream online for some friends without having to use my larger setup. I love the compactness and even remapped some aspects to fit my workflow. Only complaint is I feel like the jogwheels aren't very responsive. Like I'll start to turn one, and it takes a second for things to suddenly catch up and the controller to see I'm doing something. Not sure if it's a MIXXX issue or the controller.
    Not the end of the world. It was an $80 controller for fun. I do love how this one has some means for EQ while others done. So I can use the bass when I'm doing long blends. Might remap the quick effect/bass filter to control gains.
    Not regretting my purchase at all. Will still use and play with it. :)

    Great review! I am just trying to learn how to DJ. I am very interested this controller, but no EQ for high and mid is little concern. It is not clear for me that having no EQ is critical or not as a beginner DJ. If it is, is there any way to adjust EQ with the controller (or laptop) or EQing bass is enough for now?

    As an experienced DJ, I found it annoying that I'm not able to adjust the width of the 8 +/- Pitch Fader.
    Also, not being able to scroll and select from the library using the controller is a drawback.
    I've had some fun with it, but it's those couple drawbacks that keep it from shining for somebody looking to be more creative on the move.

      In Serato DJ Lite, go in Settings > Mixer, and in the section Crossfader you can click on Reverse.

      @francoisgaret3012 Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, turning off the base backlight is easy.
      - In Serato DJ Lite, go in Settings > Mixer > Lighting Control and choose "OFF".
      - Out of Serato: follow the Quick Start Guide > section "Adjusting the backlighting on the base", press simultaneously on "Bass/Filter"+Pad 1 and to choose the lighting scenario.

For loading a track I've offered up the shift+cue combo. Brilliant little controller!

    Good little piece of kit but prefer the Numark DJ2GO2. Sits perfectly on your laptop, quick and easy to set up and start using when you're travelling. Both of these products can still be used as back up when you're at a gig and doesn't take up much of that 'premium' space.

  • @vlajster
    @vlajster Před 5 lety +1

    it's just way too small. it's good enough for late night practice with your headphones on or maybe while travelling between gigs but that's it. the jogs are too small and a newbie would have trouble switching to another controller with a normal sized jogs or even to cdjs.

      I'm a live sound engineer who mixes and there's always a controller next to my console, that I want to spin on. It's not the type venue to play with it though. They either want you to know how to OR not touch. Something like this would help familiarize timing and cues and at night I could spin a basic beginner mix
