    An alternative way of accomplishing the process of matching the image with the face geometry is by using a shrinkwrap modifier, it works really well and saves time. If it clips into the object you set it to just mess around with the offset. Great tutorial! Now I know how to animate the faces [:

    Earlier today I was contemplating exactly about this and wondered how to google this effectively.
    This is what's used in Animal Crossing and Zelda Wind Waker for example, right?

    Instead of using an image-as-plane or shrink wrap modifier, you could create a second UV map and project-from-view that cute ol' face onto the head. Should look a little better from all angles, you won't need to worry about shadows, and it'll render faster.

      @@happyc6770 It'll look the same as SouthernShotty's animation, but you could use the method to create any face you so desired.

      This is actually what I do on my own personal work, however I have to cater to a beginner audience on youtube and I've had people struggle with UVs a lot in my past tutorials - so double UVs sounds even harder haha But thanks for sharing the link with the community!

    Immediately giving this a like even though I haven't watched it all the way through yet but I'm already liking what I'm seeing, been wanting to find out properly how to do faces and youtube gives me something decent for once finally, next step would be to give a 2.8 tutorial on a full 3D face rig.

    You just solved a different problem for me. I have been toying with the idea of using time offset modifier as an asset library for my lipsync process. However, the lips kept cycling through the lip shapes...but from your video I was like oh shorts, it's the interpolation 😱 and problem solved now. I can sleep. Thanks for the facial expressions, downloading now... And cheers for 2months free skillshare.

    Tip if when you increment the offset and it doesn't change you might have to move the slider at the bottom to make it change in your view

    For a long time I was struggling with the input images. They all turned up purple and it was impossible for me to animate. Turns out you have to number every image, just like in the tutorial.

    This is perfect, unfortunately I just ran into an issue, when I try to use multiple faces, I can’t have different expresión, somehow blender uses the same image in both faces even tho they are different materials.

      you need to copy your pictures and rename them like faceb (dont add something at the end it need to stay 1, 2, 3, ...) and use those pictures as faces and you are ready to go.

    For some reason, when i select all 25 images, after changing "Single image" to "Image sequence" my image is converted to pink, like it doesn't have all those face textures at all. I'm sure, that i chose them correctly. Why this problem is happening?

      Make sure you follow my steps exactly and have them all selected, not just highlighted when you import

      Also try the find missing files option in the file menu

      i dont know but i feel that you can install 2.8 cuz eevee will demand you less than what cycles do in term of speed, am using a surface go that it pretty close to a phone ahhahhah, anywas just give it a try to 2.82

    Hey, I used your face animation thing for my characters but you actually can add an empty and make a simple driver setup with "copy as a new driver" feature so you could just scrub through faces right in 3d view by moving an empty up and down and don't have shader editor opened.

    Hello, i was just wondering how you got the sparkle in the eyes to remain white, while the background of the face remains as an alpha channel. this wasnt covered in the tutorial but i noticed during the intro clip that the characters eyes have white "sparkle" bits but that effect isnt explained in the tutorial. Thanks!

    Great video! Really helpful. Although, I am having trouble with keeping the face fixed to a moving animation. Basically face is moving fine but doesn't stay attached to the character, when the character moves. Is there anything I have missed or would this involve another method?

    I'm going to be making an attempt at Katamari Damacy skits and short films once I get a Computer at or near Christmas time; The characters have flat faces aside from their noses, so this technique is in mind for how I'll animate the face!

    Hi! I was wondering if yo could answer my question. When applying all the faces to my plane and setting them to image sequence, my offset is set to -1, and when I set everything to 1 and try to move the offset up it won't show my other faces, do you might know how to fix this?

    Quick Q for you. When I reload a blender file, with a 'face' png series, and sometimes if I leave for a bit, the png turns into an opaque square. When I go into the shading tab, then re-point to the image, it's fine again. Do you get this sometimes? Might it be a naming error, or if I have the pngs in a different sub-folder?

      Also make sure to unpack the materials so you can change the shader. You need to have a transparent shader in unity, because the shader of blender doesnt work.
      Also maybe you need to import the .png files of your face and import them to the material. Just drag and drop it.
