Kingkiller is one of the few series that I could read over and over even if there is NEVER a book three.
Sometimes I worry we won't ever get the ending of this story. Patrick Rothfuss has said this is just a prequel, im assuming that means Kvothe isn't finished after the 3rd book. Hopefully he leaves the Inn!!!!
The Name of the Wind was the first book I've ever bought, back in 2010. I remember the first time I read the "Tarbean arc" I thought it was so sad that I skipped it the second time I read the book.
This is one of my favorite books. It shares the top spot with Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. I simply can't choose between them.

This series is BY FAR my favorite ever and I couldn't agree more about everything you just said. Even if the 3rd book never comes out everything that the characters and the lore gave me will be meaningful and will stick to me forever.
They'll stick in your mind like shit on a shoe
The story was beautiful, and so intricate, and so easy to read. I love Kvothe (a very controversial opinion abut what can I say, he’s cool). I don’t necessarily like school settings but seeing it through Kvothes eyes you see that the school is more of a tool and not the complete focus of the characters mind. The whole atmosphere was so intriguing and full of mystery. I can’t wait to reread it in summer!
Kingkiller chronicles are by far my most re-read books, I love them so, so much. And for me they lose nothing of their value just because the series aren't finished yet. They are beautiful and heartbreaking, and hope inspiring and warm and intricate, and I'm very grateful to have them in my life.
I absolutely love this series. The way the story seems to grow with each re-read with the intricate secrets Rothfuss has hidden in the pages is just great. I'm not much of a re-reader but I've lost count of the amount I've re-read these books. Anytime I find myself getting too busy or drifting away from reading for enjoyment I always come back to the comfort of Temerant and it reminds me why I love books.

My reading experience of the Name of the Wind was so special and I can’t wait to reread the series again-
I began reading this book in 2018 after several disappointing YA books in a row. I was frustrated, tired and almost in a slump but had seen this book around a LOT lately.
I decided to be safe and to read the sample on kindle before committing to another book. I only read the prologue and chapter one before buying this book and my love for reading came back to me full force.
After the first big event of the book (😭) I knew I needed to talk to someone about it but none of my friends were really readers. So I searched my podcasts app for the Name of the Wind and found *The Duke and Duchess Podcast* 💖 A husband and wife duo that felt like old friends as soon as I clicked play.
They labeled themselves as a fantasy loving podcast currently covering the Kingkiller Chronicle 4-5 chapters per episode. They do a super deep dive and catch details and hidden elements that I never caught on to. He’s reading the book for the very first time and she’s already read the series several times. It’s a fantastic setup and hilarious when he makes tinfoil predictions.
To date they’ve covered the Kingkiller Chronicle, the Gentlemen Bastards (Lies of Locke Lamora series), the Stormlight Archive and now Gardens of the Moon.
I hope I can pass this experience on to another person because the books that they chose to read have become lifetime favorites because of this podcast. If you love taking time with a good book, this might be for you 🌾🍻⚔️

I actually just finished the Wise Man’s Fear for the first time this morning. Great video, and great summary of everything there is to adore about these books. The questions left are pressing, but even if book 3 never comes out I’ll still be happy for the experience. A riveting experience.
I really liked his character development in NotW. Kvothe's zealous and impatient pursuit of knowledge was so well portrayed, which is why I would agree that he is not really due the "Mary Sue" criticism in that book. He puts in a lot of work, and he's really smart. In addition to that, his life in Tarbean and the loss you mentioned make him almost greedy when it comes to success, and I believe Rothfuss wrote that convincingly w/o making Kvothe overpowered and thus boring to follow.
Now in Wise Man's Fear, that is a very different story. He is introduced to concepts entirely foreign to him (sex, naming, Adem sign language to an extent, Adem martial arts) and almost immediately masters them, without any real effort. Granted, the Adem stuff takes him a while, but he is still considered a prodigy by the Adem for how quick he picks both of them up, DESPITE Kvothe himself stressing time and again how challenging they are. That is where Rothfuss lost me with Kvothe. Love the first book, love how well the unreliable narrator is used, love love love the prose, but man did the second book fall short of the first one for me.
This is going to be my next go to series after I’ve finished The First Law. Can’t wait!

The First Law series is one of my favorites. All 6 books in the combined universe are good.
Don't do it. Not worth it. The first book os great, the second much less so, but it still leaves you wondering about the conclusion and waiting for more. It has been about a decade since I first read the books and it is still on my mind. Not a nice feeling, knowing that I Might never see the conclusion.
i read all 9 first law books, the last couple books were the best of the bunch.

These are some of my favorite books. His writing style is definitely part of the reason I love the books so much. I also agree with you: I can't wait for the third book, but even if it doesn't come out (unlikely), I will still be glad that the first two and the novella exist. I will happily reread them.
Excellent video as always! Can't stand the "book 3 isnt coming" crowd. There's a reason why they liked the books so much in the first place, Rothfuss puts in the time and effort to create ART not just another story. Saying he doesn't care is just blatantly false. When the series is finished it will be remembered as one of the greatest fantasy trilogies ever written, no one will care about how long it took to write.

these books have been on my tbr for ages, but when you described the time in your life when you picked them up, I immediately had to get a copy from my library. I just lost my dad a couple months ago and I'm still overwhelmed with work and college, so I really appreciate this recommendation and especially the timing more than words can even explain
Every time I watch one of your videos on The Kingkiller Chronicles it just reignites my passion for the series. I also had a very similar experience when first reading them and have since re read them many times. While I’m sad the 3rd book isn’t out yet I’m so thankful to have something in my life that gets me this excited. I genuinely feel like a kid waiting for Christmas when anticipating the next book. This was such a great video! I remember reading The Name of the Wind for the first time like...9-10 years ago now?...and it’s still one of the most beautiful, well-written books I’ve ever read. I am hopeful that Rothfuss is taking his time to give us, and Kvothe, the ended he deserves. 👏🏼 love all of your videos - they are so well done.

I am currently reading Kingkiller Chronicles for the first time, I am about 150 pages into the Name of The Wind. To be precise I am on the part where Kvothe decides to go to hillside to beg for the first time and is beaten by the guards and the head demon of Midwinter Paegentry helps him. That part was so moving. Rothfuss’ Prose is so immersive and enchanting that I am not able to put down the book.
It really has one of the finest prose I have seen, and everything feels so intentional that I am not able to understand what I have to remember and what not? It’s just amazing.
BTW excellent work, your editing skills are quite good.

ok, so you might not like this one but I have to get this out. I love KKC. I have signed books and have been there since pretty much the beginning. Read/listened to the books multiple times. Traveled through KKC theory forums on reddit and watched all of your stuff and most other quality content on youtube. Your analysis is pretty spot on for most of us that have dived deep. Now to the point of my major skepticism. Follow his blog... I think that Rothfuss has fundamentally changed as a person over the past 10 years and that will reflect in book 3. I think he now feels personally responsible for making a societal "change for good" through the fame of his books, instead of just continuing the story as planned. "Those with great power have great...".. Yeah we get it with him pretty much devoting himself to Worldbuilders for the past few years. Also, I hate to bring this up as a point of blame but, Oot(his son) will also play a part here. From his blog entries, it seems that Pat is a very large role model to his son, loves him to the nth degree, and has to be the personal shaper of his sons morality etc. That's natural, that's part of being a father. Now though, we have a different lens of the world that Pat is writing(or re-writing) from. Kvothe as a character has always been.. not amoral but rides a "fine line" sometimes. Reactive violence in particular is also a major aspect of Kvothe's response to conflict, as also it is to the world in general. This is not dissimilar to us and our own world to a certain degree and that's(IMO) a large reason as to why so many readers identify with the character. Kvothe is very human(with a photographic memory at least...). I think that Pat is currently struggling with that moral "fine line" now though. With such a large current audience, does he stay true to the original nature of the character that he created over a decade ago or does he modify the story to represent his current concerns in life that were propagated by his success and parenthood? My guess is the latter so I don't have a lot of hope for book 3 as being true to the story that started brilliantly when he was a struggling a bit. He will resolve the mysteries but at the same time, I feel it will be more like TSRFST than NOTW or WMF. Or I could be all wrong and he just never had a good ending to the book from the get go? He will sell you a bunch of KKC Merch or solicit you for donations on his website though b4 he loses a lot of fans after book 3 realease(as he's been doing for years)...

‘I got a problem!’ We’ve all been there Jay. Favourite books or movies that one slips back into reading or viewing, even though you know them like the back of your hand. Also can quote or recall favourite parts to others. Favourite books/movies are like comfort food because they can remind you of a time when things were different, simpler or easier. They can make you feel better or worse depending what you need, whether it’s comfort, reassurance, guidance or a reminder of ones youthful times. It can also remind people about those they have like a gifted book from a parent or friend, that when the book takes on a meaning that only that person knows. Beyond a favourite book it can become a treasure or a family heirloom something of true value to pass down the generations of one’s family.
Oh yeah I know how required reading can potentially rid a person of their desire to read for enjoyment as I’ve been to university twice so six years of it and learn plus school before those stages of my life. It’s crazy 😜 to think I want to go back again that’s another story. But needless to say I never lost my love of reading or the enjoyment of it because I found a way to seperate from non fiction to fiction and fantasy. I always kept reading both without it I might have wanted to give up reading. It’s worth learning about the real world and created ones to keep things fresh. Otherwise reading can be lost to some people.

By far my favorite saga. Worth the wait for the third installment.
When I first read the books I couldn't believe the range and intensity of emotions it made me feel... I remember getting chills, having tears in my eyes from the beautiful prose, laughing HYSTERICALLY, sobbing HYSTERICALLY, vibrating with excitement, and just generally being compeletely addicted to reading these books. I would finish The Wise Man's Fear and just go right back to the beginning of The Name of the Wind. I'm going to patiently wait for the final book. Fans may be disappointed right now, but I know we won't be disappointed when we finally get to read Doors of Stone.
I find myself raving about these books to anyone who asks me for a recommendation.

It’s easily one of my favorite series and even if it never ends I still really enjoy Kvothe’s journey.
These books are undoubtedly a masterpiece. I'm upset that the third book hasn't been published yet, but I'd rather Rothfuss take the time to make them as perfect as he can make them. These books are impeccably written. They made me realize how few words we use in normal day to day life. I fell in love with the marvelous subtleties of the English language because of these books. There is not one word out of place. It's his Magnum Opus, his perfect storm, a once in a millennium masterpiece. I eagerly await more.
I came to this story when I was 14 y.o. I since then I loved the world. Truth be told I started reading them in Spanish but since then I have read each book over 9 times each both in Spanish and English and the are still my adoration.
My friend gave me a copy of the 1st book. 😁 I’ll definitely read it.

I'm not sure how many times I have read this books and each time I love them more and got desperate waiting for the third one. However, I never get bored at all.
As for Kvothe being a reliable narrator; or not. There has always bwen one part that stood out to me. Though it haa been so long since I read the book, I could not point out where to find it.
But it was where he was telling his story, and the way it was worded made me think that what we read, was not what he was telling the Chronicler.
That entire part made me not question what the reader read, but if what Chronicler was told to be what we were reading.
Wish I could remember which book and where, but it has been 3 years...

I found this book through a podcast (my brother my brother and me) and purely based off my trust of those guys I read it. They are now my favorite books of all time.

Also: I always found Kvothe to be very similar to Odysseus as he retells his story to the Phaeacians in (I think?) Books 9-11 of the Odyssey. The magical encounters, the possibility of an unreliable narrator, how arrogant they both are. the importance of music and story telling, themes/motifs of travel, family ties, revenge, etc. Not sure if this is intention, but I’m thinking about putting together an essay / video essay on it when Doors of Stone comes out

I just listened to this series for the third time over the last 2 weeks and change. You should try listening to them on audible. I picked up on more and different things while listening. You also get to hear the proper pronunciations for words.

Complaining about book 3 is not of the lethani. It is a destructive attitude, instead of one which allows you to follow the path of life as it is, which lets you experience life at its fullest

I honestly haven't been THIS invested in a fantasy world since Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars series completed. Sure I've been drawn in by her other works, and from other authors, but there's just something extra about Kingkiller Chronicles! I have a hard time putting the books down; I'm smack in the middle of Wise Man's Fear right now.

I got about halfway through the first book and had the feeling that it wasn't really leading anywhere and so I stopped. Im not a very analytical reader, I don't look for clues nor do I ever reread a book once Ive completed it.
On the other hand, I did enjoy his writing style. Given all the praise it keeps getting, I've exceptionally put it back on the reading list for a reread. Maybe as you said, it's more enjoyable upon rereading.
I envision 3 books on the past, followed by 3 books on what kvothe does currently, then 3 books on the history of kvothe's future.

Oh I love that you’ve appeared in my suggestions. I was searching for some Kingkiller theory videos and couldn’t believe how many were negative. I’ve read both books a couple of times and have just lent them to someone while I listen along to the audio version. It’s like a little book club, but I obviously don’t want to spoil anything for him, so wanted to did other people who have read them to talk theories with! I remember I had loads by the end of NotW, but can’t remember what they were 🤣
Well, you’ve convinced me. This series has just shot up to the top of my TBR.

I have to say that I largely agree with you on everything. I read it twice in book format and listened to it once on audiobook. The second read was better than the first because I could pay attention to a lot of smaller details, and when i listened to the audiobook i literally got chills when i realized so many of the lines rhymed or had a prose to them. While i also agree that this series has it's flaws, it does hold a place in my heart because it was the first book I read for fun in nearly 4 years (all of high school I didn't read and I picked this up right after graduating), and it had rekindled my love for reading.
also whenever people say that kvothe is a mary sue i think they're not understanding that he's the one telling the story. Of course he's going to make himself sound close to perfect and that everything came easy to him, because memories of how hard learning stuff fades. and he also reminsces on his mistakes and flaws a lot and at least on the second read i noticed that he's not perfect at all and he's just a guy telling his life story and focusing on the little things which had an impact.
anyways sorry for the little rant in the second paragraph, great review. this is the book i most recommend when people ask me for recommendations so there is that :)
I found these books 4 years ago, I wait patiently for the third book but I have many other books to read through so I'm not too concerned.
The thing that struck me most with these books is how easily they come to life your mind. Some book series take almost the entire first and second book to have a full picture of the world but within the first few paragraphs of the Name of the Wind you can already see the world that Patrick has created.
I've had The Name of the Wind on my shelves for quite some time, but I don't want to start it when the third and final book isn't out yet :)))))
If you start now you can get through several re-reads and be well versed in all the little details and hints from the other two books.
Agree. The ebb and flow of the words, intermingled with dreams of coyote and loki stories, and of course All the Jacks and foxes. Great recommendation
one thing i realised is that just like real life people, once i like/love a character, even though they make mistakes and showcase flaws, it generally doesn't take away from my love for them. it's the tolerance that comes through understanding, and i might even find myself agreeing with them too. so i feel like once i start this series kvothe will have me wrapped around his finger lol.

Books are pure fire, amazing and I was hooked after first few pages. It is no wonder it was a best seller. I just read them few days ago and honestly while writters should have take time to do a story they could be transperant more so we know what is going on. If he says it will take me at least 5-10 years more, am 33% finished that would be totally ok but it sucks to know the latest information about the book rn is a radio scilence after he never delivered a promised chapter for which he got over a million dollars for his charity. Kind of sucks. I get it tho, had something similar happen to me but what got me out was simply being open.
No idea when or if the series will be finished, but I do already own what's been published and I do plan on reading it eventually. No idea when that will be, but you definitely do a great job of hyping up the series.
With listening to them at work, I have to be in the top 90% or higher of having read it the most.
in conclusion: one of the best stories one should hold till finished. because i love re-reading and see the clues
i feel like book 3 will release this year or at least be announced. just a hunch.
Made a deal with one of my professors who is also a huge fantasy nerd. I would read The Name of the Wind if he began the third book in the Stormlight Archive (one of my favorite series). Your video has hyped me up excited to start it in the next week!

Well. I watched this to gain inspiration to finish the name of the wind. I started about a month ago and have only reached 237.
Watching some reviews I was shocked to see how highly it is regarded. Although I I finally getting interesting at the university, I find it dull. Sorry. That is my opinion. I had no preconceptions about this book having never heard of it. I was given it by a friend for summer reading. So far the world is superficial, deep I not something I would refer to it. I do hope I enjoy it more soon, but I cannot see myself ever reading this again. Never mind the second book.
I do understand you love it, but it seems it is not for everyone. So far.

Omg! You made me want to reread these books so bad, and I never reread books. I forgot most of the things that happen in the story, so I will reread them for sure, but I want to wait a bit longer for the 3rd book to be out. By now I still have so many books to read.

Same, the name of the book made me pick it up, was the only book I picked up in so many years, it just called to me.
The seven words thing also happens with the "then words to break a strong man's will", specially during the conversation witht the Cthaeh. I've compared both the original books with the Spanish translation to make sure this kind of sentences are not just a coincidence of the translation, and I can tell you the phrasing in both situations is compleatly intended to have this number of words!
I am curious about this series, but since I am still waiting on a song of ice and fire, I think I will start this when the third comes out.

I think you really capture excitement with that video, i started the series a few days ago and this video is hyping me up even more. However i stopped at the three minute mark, cause of some light spoilers already (at least till page 300 there is no word of kvothe being responsible for the skale creatures). Great video tho, i'll Look forward to watching it after I've caught up :)
