Just a few minutes in, wanted to say something re Chris' mentioning of Lolita fashion - the fashion/movement exists explicitly because of enjoyment of fashion and the need for autonomy and having control over your clothing. Of course, like with anything girls do, there are people fetishizing it. But at the core of the movement, Lolita is all about youthfulness, self-expression, not giving a damn what other people think, and feeling cute.

I don't really think Chihiro is a trans icon?
Chihiro is a boy who feels *pressured* to pretend to be a girl to hide his weakness. And his arc is about being comfortable in his own gender . Before his death, he WANTED to tell everyone he's a boy, and to stop pretending.
It's like... Coming out as cis, hah. That's like the opposite of trans.
To me, Chihiro is a boy that realizes it's okay to be petite, AND a boy. But also who wants to become stronger and improve himself.
It's inspirational.
I just, don't like it when ALL gender related characters or character arcs need to be lumped into the trans interpretation.
I do like trans characters, but, not every crossdresser is a trans icon
Yeah, that's always been the discourse around Chihiro. I'm all for trans rep in games, but Chihiro pointedly cross dresses for the reasons you said above.
I think that chihiro is just such a can of worms that no one wants to touch just bc chihiro’s writing is kinda just transphobic tropes one after another. I’d be fine with any of the number of interpretations of them if their actual canon character was written better instead of just being yet another trap joke
@@SakuraVarietyChannel Well, I don't think the authors had any malicious intent. I feel like my interpretation is the one the writers point to. I don't know much about tran stereotypes, but I didn't get those vibes personally.
I mean heck. Alter Ego refers to Chihiro as "master" or "he".
So we can infer Chihiro preffered that.
I feel like if it was really a trans thing, or if the writers were implying a trans thing, Alter Ego would say she. But I dunno. Chihiro's gender is only written poorly if you think of it as a trans thing. If you think of it as a crossdresser thing I see no issue
@@leritykay8911 well as a trans crossdresser theres a lot of stuff that just icks me out about their writing, which i am willing to chock up to it just being a different time, the original game came out in like 2013 or something. “Cute gurl character is actually a dude lol isnt that gay or what lmao” was a big problem trope around this time, and the danganronpa cast really didn’t need to “discover” their gender the way they did (seriously we did not need them feeling up chihiro’s body just to go OMG PENIS they could have just had the detective go by the way i checked the body) it just feels tactless

I haven't seen anyone say it, so I'll do it myself, Chris was right about Nagito Komaeda, his name is an anagram of "Makoto Naegi da" or "I'm Makoto Naegi", that plus the VA thing, the talent and also both jackets having the same colors and just overall almost exact same palette (just changing browns for whites) is to evoke of Makoto and confuse the player.
But also, if you notice, his hair despite having the same overall silouetthe, with his locks going in the same direction as Makoto's, Nagito's is wavier and curlier, which can both give you
-Chill vibes (like Hinata's first impression of him)
-Crazy vibes (like his true self)
Also, him being larger than our short king Makoto can also showcase how his luck is also larger than Makoto's.
I was in chat during this stream, a lot of us did mention “Naegi Makoto da,” but this is a great reminder for people who weren’t :D

In the Games Ibuki is mentioned to actually be incredibly skilled and gifted at any and every instrument she performs on, and was even the lead singer in a popular pop band. The whole rock aesthetic and move to this very niche kind of music was because she felt bored in the fairly cookie cutter world of pop music and is in the middle of reinventing herself in the game.
If you are about to play Danganronpa really soon, you should probably save this video for later
It's always really disappointing to see people who are convinced lolita fashion is a fetish thing when it's super not. The whole point is to be over the top cutesy in a way that men don't find attractive! I wish subcultures of all sorts could exist without this sort of reputation, but especially lolita, which was fundamentally designed to be unappealing.
Yeah, Celes trying way too hard with her outfit is in-character. She's an ordinary girl who so desperately wishes she was elite.
They don't even try to hide what's going on with Junko in her art and outfit. It has got to be the worst kept secret of all time. (Now where's that one fanart meme of Junko covered in spoiler tags saying "is this hell?")

Funny how she asked "Is she trans too" for Chiaki. Chiaki is often paired with Chihiro in fanart. (Also first top tier, Chiaki sweep LET'S GOOOO)
I love Gundham for how fully committed to the bit he is. He leans so far into Chuunibyou syndrome that it actually loops back around to being kinda cool again, and his outfit reflects that well. It's over-the-top edgy without being too tacky or unoriginal.
Ibuki might be the Ultimate Musician, but I'mma count Chris's guess of Ultimate Bisexual as correct.
I always figured Mikan's choppy haircut is because she's perpetually bullied and they ruined her hair to torment her (and this has happened so often that she stopped bothering to fix her look).

Don't be hating on Shinguji, his looks are gucci (Actually do hate on him, he looks so interesting at first and then he just turns into a clown car of a character)

I wouldn't exactly agree with that characterization of Celeste. She dresses that way because she's a very flamboyant person.

So the thing with the hair is that, it's basically tradition for the protagonist to have a hair that sticks up in this series. Saihara's hat felt like it was almost exclusively used to hide his so no one would think what happened happened.
‼️‼️Just correcting you on something.. Chihiro isnt trans. He dresses that way because society made fun of him for being so feminine looking so he crossdressed so people would leave him alone. He was gonna start working on himself so he could become stronger and more confident to be himself.

I used to be really into Danganronpa and, while nowadays I certainly have *opinions* on it, I must say that there are some really solid designs in the series (and some…not so solid ones lol)

It was all a trap, Chiaki in both Danganronpa 2 and Danganronpa 3 was a victim of ultimate Despair, In all Danganronpa the last case is always a trap.

Fun fact Kirumi Tojo's English voice actress plays 2B from Nier Automata and I think they based the design either on her or the opposite. Either or she is amazing

Just gonna give my two cents, but people insisting Chihiro is trans and a girl have absolutely 0 media literacy😭😭 like, his whole thing was that pretending to be a girl was a defense mechanism for his inferiority complex for being too “weak and girly” for a male, and the whole reason he wanted to get stronger was so he could be confident in his masculinity. Like, at MOST it’s okay to refer to Chihiro with they/them pronouns, but he’s absolutely not a girl💀💀💀

Frankly, I really like the final trial of V3 and I kinda see why people don't like it but it doesn't make V3 terrible where depending on the person that it is really good or really bad.

that final trial is legit my favorite video game ending ever. i can see why it’s devisive but to this day i have yet to come across another game ending that can top it.

This video combined with doing AA case 5-3 just reminds me of how weird Japanese Murder Mystery writers were about including trans characters back in that time. Chihiro was obviously written as a trans man, and Robin was written as a trans women, but I can only assume some higher up didn't let them include actual trans characters, so they just did a quick last minute rewrite to make them cis crossdressers instead.
Well it's more of a trope of mystery histories in general: a character hiding something about themselves (in this case their gender) and you have to uncover it. In the case of Chihiro that was done for the mystery aspect above all else, and the writer did say that if he could he would go back to rewrite some parts of Chihiro's character, so not bad faith mostly just poor execution in some aspects
I always thought Chihiro's character was more about going against traditional stereotypes because he didn't fit the stereotype of a guy and felt shame from that, but he wanted to grow as a person in the end and be his true self.
I think the main reason a lot of english speaking people think it's transphobic is because as soon as we find out Chihiro has a male body all the characters refer to him with male pronouns without knowing why he dressed as a woman, but Japanese doesn't typically use gendered pronouns so the english version probably used he for simple context. Plus I remember 2010 and trans discussions weren't exactly talked about like they are today, so I doubt that was the original intention.
