- Following the video on case based discussion of hypernatremia in neonates ( • Hypernatremia in neona... ), in this video, I discuss in detail the approach to management/correction of hypernatremic dehydration, including calculating fluid deficit, type of fluid to use, how to use partial oral and partial IV correction and how to choose the tonicity of the fluid used. It is a very important topic, please share.

Sir, I have watched all of your videos. They are a quick go for an update for neonatologists too. Moreover, presentations are by eminent personalities of particular fields. It's a great option to learn on your channel. you might be interested to read Mx of hypernatremia in the last edition of nelson. Very simplified, rather over simplified. Please post your view. hello I have a doubt, in the calculation exersice, you put 2400X 0.14 , this last. number where is from ?--
Hi, 3 kg or 3000 g is weight, body water is 0.8 times 3 (2400). The 0.14 is observed-desired sodium/desired Na, ie 160-140/140 in this example, ie 0.14
In the newzland guidline they mention
13%deficit mean 130 x3kg = 390 gram
Plus maintenance 100ml/kg =300 ml
690 ml /24 hr that mean 28ml/hr
That's correct ? It's not too much fluid
The duration of correction is an important factor, 48 to even 72 hours in severe cases
I will review this as well (New Zealand guideline)
