I hope you were able to speak up and get your money back or at least get a discount because that’s nothing close to what you asked for. I’ve been there though. I went to get a trim once and the girl kept making the sides uneven and I ended up losing 4 1/2 inches of hair and it was supposed to be a trim. I was heartbroken when it happened but after a few days, I’ve just learned to go with it. PS. You could rock the most 80’s mullet or rat tail and you’d still be stunning. Don’t let something like an undesirable haircut stop you from shining bright baby girl

Go to an independent salon, so like one person running a small salon room (it’s called Sola in my area) but since there’s only one stylist per salon you can see the reviews on singular people opposed to reviews on a salon as a whole. You can get nails and other beauty treatment research done this way too.

Finding a good stylist is SO hard. I am so sorry 😭 tbh I'd try and find a black hair stylist who has a loooot of experience with curls and see how that goes. Most people don't realize that a half inch can become 3 inches once the curls come back
Talented stylists there are plenty... but stylists who REALLY know how to style and cut curly hair that is much rarer...often hairdressers say they are good with curly hair when it is completely not true..🤷♀️ they say yes for money 🤑

I saw that first snip and almost screamed. No way to blend that into your existing hair. What my curly girl friends do is blow out their hair, trim the ends dry, and refine it wet and curly. That way you get your split ends without changing the shape much.
Similar situation happened to me many years back in hs. This was when the bleach blonde on top with dark underneath was trending, and that’s what I asked for. I specifically asked for very little to be cut, I understood it would need layered so the dark would peekaboo towards the lower end. At the time my hair had grown to be quite long and for once felt a bit thicker.. naturally my hair is very fine and a bit thin. Anyway my regular stylist was behind so he asked the new hairdresser if she mind getting me started, and of course she didn’t hesitate. I just remember my usual stylist looking over and saying OMG why are you using a thinner on her hair? I thought she was using a comb. After the end result and getting to see the big reveal, I had some layers that was literally 3 inches long. My hair looked like a mullet, particularly looked like I was in an 80s rock band. I remember keeping my hair in a ponytail, until I was able to get it cut to my shoulders without it being too thin. Since that incident have not let a stylist use scissors on me.
That's why a stylist that knows what they're doing will not cut it this... It's amazing to me people can study for it and I know it doesn't take a master to cut hair, but how is it that the only hope for a decent cut is looking for someone black or that also wear their hair curly? How long will it take for most people cutting hair to know how to cut most types? If it was me with my raggedy waves and occasional spiral I'd get it, but her hair should be cut dry, blown out then water to get the curls back and refine, otherwise there's not really any telling to the shape and you end up with something like this where even the stylist knows they did a sht job and will still charge you full price to look like a show poodle. Not mad at you just at the system and how he uphold it bc it's somehow worse to complain about looking bad than it it's to make someone look bad for months.

I remember going into my appointment with my hair length being half way down my back. I showed the stylist an image I found with short hair, layers and curtain bangs. I told them specifically that I wanted to keep my hair longer than what the picture had shown, and they agreed. At the end of my appointment my hair was wet, and the length looked shorter than I had anticipated, but I wasn’t truly freaking out. It wasn’t until after we payed and I started driving that my hair started drying and my curls started shrinking, where I found out it was now barely touching my shoulders. I remember staring at myself at a mirror at target, almost in tears because I could even pull my hair up. I haven’t gotten a serious haircut in years, and I now have a fear of salons 🙃🙃
Im so sorry this happened to you! Im 100% sure that some hairstylists got their education online…they are just not able to understand their clients at all! I haven’t been to a salon in about 7-8 years because the stylists mess up my curly/wavy hair EVERY TIME,I can actually do it better myself…which is tragic when you know they are supposed to be the professionals. Im never going to a hairstylist again in my life!!
I am a (former, still licensed) hairstylist, in California. Ever since the pandemic - they freakin’ removed the practical part of the exam, due state-board, to get licensed. Meaning, no one has to prove they know how to properly do any services - they only gotta do the written, and prove they know theory.
I think everyone should learn how to do their own hair. I’ve always wanted to start a finishing/grooming school - to teach young people how to be presentable and self-sufficient, going into adulthood. Even with being a hairstylist, I’ve had trouble getting adequate haircuts. Once I learned how to cut my own hair - I’ve been happy, with the results, for the most part. And whatever I am upset about, I’m not pissed that I spent money, and feel out of control because someone else did it, at least.
Yaaa one time I went to this super fancy salon to get my hair dyed. I wanted pink and I was already a dirty blonde. She bleached it and then went to go eat her lunch (I later worked for this salon as front desk) she was gone for about an hour or so and I could feel my scalp burning so I went to another stylist and asked if I could have my hair rinsed. When she rinsed my hair it was falling off and completely melted. I was furious and they were very apologetic but I had to cut my hair super short and then buzz the back because it was so damaged. I never felt uglier. I haven’t been to a salon in 3 years bc of that. And when I started working there that same stylist ended up getting fired because she did the same exact thing and fried off another persons hair.
Noooo I feel this so much 😭😭😭 I tried to get a haircut a few years ago and was so scared to get a new one bc they messed up my curly hair like this 😭 Thankfully I got a hairstylist who did EXACTLY what I asked for and I’m so grateful ☺️

It’s so hard to find a good stylist for curly hair... when I was 8 years old a hairdresser cut my hair so short that I looked like an old lady with a perm.. I went out to the salon crying. since I’m afraid of getting my hair cut..😭
lol when I was a kid my mum took me to a barber 😂 he only knew one girls cut and it was a bob around ear lobe length with thick bangs. so I became a hairstylist and always do my own hair 😅
This is why I learned to cut my own hair too many people didn’t understand what I wanted and then if I mess my hair up I can’t be upset at anyone but myself

As a stylist. She just evened your hair out, and a half inch on curls will cause it to shrink more than normal. It will relax back down in a week or 2. It's the loss of dead weight
I've been trying to work the courage up to go get my hair trimmed. I've been cutting my own for well over a decade since a very bad experience. I was so close last week. I went to a salon, watched the dif stylists and almossssst did it but just couldn't. So for a few days I've been working up to it and then, I saw THIS video and the update. Now, I'm back to being terrified. I am so sorry they did that, and I'm so glad they tried to fix it up. I feel like you should keep your hair as natural as possible. Especially because if you color it, you'll have to keep going back to get it touched up. So more money for them and more salon time for you. Wirh your beautiful curly hair, I'd leave it alone. If you want fun hair for a day, go online to ebonyline wigs and buy some wigs under $30 in fun styles, colors and even Los or braid wigs! No big commitment and let's your hair grow.

Girl I feel ur pain like 2 weeks ago I had my hair up to my chest and I told the hairdresser I want it on top of my shoulders he cut it all the way up to my chin and o was sobbing cause I was trying to get a cute look and short hair suits me but I was not prepared for it so don’t worry u will get over it cause I felt the same way
You poor love! This is why I've spent years cutting and dying my curly hair at home myself 🙈 I've been burned (thankfully not literally!) too many times by bad stylists. I need to branch out and try again at some point, but I'm always disappointed! I do t do a perfect job at all, but at least it's all on me when i do it myself, and I've nor paid for it 🤣

I would highly suggest going to someone that knows how to cut curls. I went to a black lady and she said curls need to be cut different, and she knows what the curls want. Idk if it’s because of her curly hair that she’s worked with or other curly girls, but she gave me the best haircut of my life. Please ask them if they have cut curls before. I wish they taught stylists how to cut curls specifically, because they look amazing when done right. Not enough people know how to cut curls tho
I love being natural but I have legit never had a good curly cut experience, curly hair is legit so personal and no one knows your vision like you do. I would start cutting my own hair, if I mess it up at least I didn’t lose $250 cus why are curly cuts so expensive :(
A very similar thing happened to me lately, but over a period of time. My hair a year ago was halfway down my back, and I started going to a new stylist around January of this year. A couple months ago, my mom noticed my hair was shorter. I started giving my stylist strict instructions that I was trying to grow my hair out (which I've been doing for 6 years now) so that she would hopefully keep my trim to a minimum. My most recent haircut was 2 days ago and my hair is now up to my shoulders. I balled my eyes out that night because of how long it took me to get my hair to where it was. I have thick hair, so it will take me approximately 2+ years to get my length back. Im cancelling my next appointment with that stylist and waiting until September to go back for another trim, but with a different stylist.

tbh i've had the same hairdresser for years and she just does it out of her home and she is the best and gives GREAT curly cuts, not too far either. Maybe check out some smaller shops??
Wow! Honestly if I was you I'd just start trying to figure out how to do my trims at home. I know curly hair is way different, and clearly there was a misstep in your appt. I am so sorry! Idk how far I'm coming in to this but I think it would almost me better a little shorter now honestly, it would give your curls more lift on the sides. At any rate, you my dear are beautiful and so are your gorgeously tightly wound curls, even if they may be a visual representation of nerves at times 😅❤
I severely hate hair dressers, mostly because my aunt Jude (a professional hairdresser) cut my hair since I was little. She passed in 2023 and I didn’t get my hair cut till this year,the new hairdresser toke off 4 inches of my chest length hair plus it was uneven since she tried to give me layers. All I’m trying to say is Ive felt the same pain.
Once I went to a hairstylist, had been going to for a little bit, and I asked for CURTAIN bangs. then he proceeded to cut my hair into normal bangs that were very short. my mom and sister came to and both wanted layers. Then the hairstylist cut their hair into actual choppy layers like actual layers that were just like straight lines. let’s just say my mom got her money back and we never went back. Plus I was crying, and when my mom was talking to them about it some people saw and left and I’m glad they did. So now I also have a little fear of going to cut my hair. But I just recently got a trim and everything was ok. Plus I’m lucky my hair grows quickly.
I would recommend doing this herself, it seems like the stylist take most of the length off because they don’t know how to cut ur hair type, maybe it’s possible to get ur hair cut by someone who genuinely knows curly hair
Dude, my deepest condolences!!! Like I know it's "just hair" but oooooofff that was so so so much more than 1/2"!!!!!! Shrinkage aside, that was bad!! I had the same hair dresser from when I was 3 till I got married at 19. I have yet to find a reliable salon that can cut curly hair. Ended up quitting a very promising salon as she switched to straight razoring hair & gave me 1/4" bangs after shrinkage!!! I hope it grows back quickly & you can find "your" hair dresser!
Last time I got a haircut, my hairstylist actually started to cry and say she was sorry over and over because she ruined my hair. She claimed she was very new, which honestly with how bad it came out I don’t think that was an excuse to continue to cut after I asked her to stop. I literally had to convince my manager at work to let me wear a hat temporarily to hide it. My friend in hair school hooked me up with extensions because she’s an angel, I almost didn’t let her because I was afraid it would get worse, but I’m so glad I trusted her.
I think so many relate, I went for a curly cut and my curls haven’t curled the same way or even curl at all since yet it doesn’t look good straight. Going to a highly skilled curl specialist idc what pays it’ll be worth having my hair back
Go to a black or some type of ethnic salon. They’ll do that hair easy and have it looking beautiful. I try to make sure my stylist either has my hair type themselves or plenty of examples of their work with hair like mine. I never cut straight because I wear curly the most. I can also cut my own hair curly but that’s not for everyone. I find it easy but It’s kind of an art to do on yourself 😊
Happened to me last week I have curly hair below my butt and I asked for a one inch trim and they cut off 9 inches!!!!! Completely heart broken so I feel u girl 💕
No bueno!! It really is hard as a hairdresser to give some clients what they want while also meeting their requirements. Sometimes people want a whole new look but then don’t want us to take any length off, which sometimes isn’t really possible! Definitely find a trustworthy stylist that works with lots of textured hair tho! That should help for next time 🥰 you’re still beautiful!

In my 3c hair experience, a curly cut for volume is never the choice. You'll always end up crying. I havent got my hair cut professionally in over 2 yrs, and I haven't gone back bc I cut my hair better than any stylist ive had 💜💜💜
Omg that's horrible, I'm so sorry they did that to you *hugs* I've had so much hair trauma from people not listening to what I want or ignoring the reference photos I bring. It sucks because I have to remove my glasses and I'm legally blind without, so I can't see a thing they're doing. My hair isn't curly, but has a lot of texture and stretches when wet, so it always comes out too short. Please tell me you didn't pay.
Curly Girl here. I have only met one stylist in my life (and I’m over 60) who knew how to cut curly hair. If you ever find one that knows how keep them.
Curly hair salon or black hair salon that specializes in framing cuts. The mainstream or “trendy” salons, unless they have someone who specifically works on curls and they have a portfolio, rarely know how to handle curly hair. Lots of people dont learn in cosmo school how to handle anything beyond straight or mildly wavy hair.
It sounds weird but like my hair springs up drastically when cut but after like 3-5 days it kinda levels itself out and doesn’t look nearly as short. Also super short layers on top for shape are a must for me!
I've had so many people tell me that they don't think long curly hair is pretty. It's projection, everyone who has told me that either brushes the texture out of their own hair or straightens it everyday. I cut my own hair now, I don't let anyone near my hair because texturism is so common even amongst stylists.
These stories are the reason why I havent gone to the salon for over 6 years..my hair is so thick and long but im so scared. I camt find anyone herr in the hague.
Other curly girls are welcome to chime in here, but whenever i get a trim they cut my hair when it’s wet. Curls bounce, so just a half an inch can make a big difference. I am also trying to maintain my length, i just get rid of dead-ends and add some layers for shape/volume. I’m sorry you had this experience😔
It took me 18 years (my whole life) to find a hairdresser who said they specialize in curly cuts and actually new what they were doing. Now I'm going into cosmetology school so I can help other people with curly hair.
Had the same situation 2 weeks ago. Asked for very soft and subtle layers only at the bottom and just a trim to cut off the broken ends cuz I'mtrying to grow my hair out. She cut off 10cm and gave me heavy af layers that look horrible if I don't style them, which I don't want to have to do every single day. That was the first time I cried after a haircut.
When you don’t like your hair It doesn’t matter what anyone says. No matter how good they say it is. You know you hate it and you have to see it every day. I feel you. I’ve been there you’ll find someone who know your hair type and how you want it cut❤❤

When she rinsed my hair it was falling off and completely melted. I was furious and they were very apologetic but I had to cut my hair super short and then buzz the back because it was so damaged. I never felt uglier. I haven’t been to a salon in 3 years bc of that. And when I started working there that same stylist ended up getting fired because she did the same exact thing and fried off another persons hair.

It’s so hard to find a good stylist for curly hair... when I was 8 years old a hairdresser cut my hair so short that I looked like an old lady with a perm.. I went out to the salon crying. since I’m afraid of getting my hair cut..😭
lol when I was a kid my mum took me to a barber 😂 he only knew one girls cut and it was a bob around ear lobe length with thick bangs. so I became a hairstylist and always do my own hair 😅

I've been trying to work the courage up to go get my hair trimmed. I've been cutting my own for well over a decade since a very bad experience. I was so close last week. I went to a salon, watched the dif stylists and almossssst did it but just couldn't. So for a few days I've been working up to it and then, I saw THIS video and the update. Now, I'm back to being terrified. I am so sorry they did that, and I'm so glad they tried to fix it up. I feel like you should keep your hair as natural as possible. Especially because if you color it, you'll have to keep going back to get it touched up. So more money for them and more salon time for you. Wirh your beautiful curly hair, I'd leave it alone. If you want fun hair for a day, go online to ebonyline wigs and buy some wigs under $30 in fun styles, colors and even Los or braid wigs! No big commitment and let's your hair grow.
Some hairdressers do not know how to handle curly hair. There are some who specialise in it, so you might need to research
And this is exactly why I haven't been to get a haircut in like 5 years!! I'm sooo sick of people cutting all my hair off when that's not what I'm asking for!

I would highly suggest going to someone that knows how to cut curls.
I went to a black lady and she said curls need to be cut different, and she knows what the curls want. Idk if it’s because of her curly hair that she’s worked with or other curly girls, but she gave me the best haircut of my life.
Please ask them if they have cut curls before. I wish they taught stylists how to cut curls specifically, because they look amazing when done right. Not enough people know how to cut curls tho
I love being natural but I have legit never had a good curly cut experience, curly hair is legit so personal and no one knows your vision like you do. I would start cutting my own hair, if I mess it up at least I didn’t lose $250 cus why are curly cuts so expensive :(

A very similar thing happened to me lately, but over a period of time. My hair a year ago was halfway down my back, and I started going to a new stylist around January of this year. A couple months ago, my mom noticed my hair was shorter. I started giving my stylist strict instructions that I was trying to grow my hair out (which I've been doing for 6 years now) so that she would hopefully keep my trim to a minimum. My most recent haircut was 2 days ago and my hair is now up to my shoulders. I balled my eyes out that night because of how long it took me to get my hair to where it was. I have thick hair, so it will take me approximately 2+ years to get my length back. Im cancelling my next appointment with that stylist and waiting until September to go back for another trim, but with a different stylist.

tbh i've had the same hairdresser for years and she just does it out of her home and she is the best and gives GREAT curly cuts, not too far either. Maybe check out some smaller shops??
Wow! Honestly if I was you I'd just start trying to figure out how to do my trims at home. I know curly hair is way different, and clearly there was a misstep in your appt. I am so sorry! Idk how far I'm coming in to this but I think it would almost me better a little shorter now honestly, it would give your curls more lift on the sides. At any rate, you my dear are beautiful and so are your gorgeously tightly wound curls, even if they may be a visual representation of nerves at times 😅❤

I severely hate hair dressers, mostly because my aunt Jude (a professional hairdresser) cut my hair since I was little. She passed in 2023 and I didn’t get my hair cut till this year,the new hairdresser toke off 4 inches of my chest length hair plus it was uneven since she tried to give me layers. All I’m trying to say is Ive felt the same pain.
This is why I learned to cut my own hair, I have never had a stylist that knows that shrinkage is a little beast

Once I went to a hairstylist, had been going to for a little bit, and I asked for CURTAIN bangs. then he proceeded to cut my hair into normal bangs that were very short. my mom and sister came to and both wanted layers. Then the hairstylist cut their hair into actual choppy layers like actual layers
that were just like straight lines. let’s just say my mom got her money back and we never went back. Plus I was crying, and when my mom was talking to them about it some people saw and left and I’m glad they did. So now I also have a little fear of going to cut my hair. But I just recently got a trim and everything was ok. Plus I’m lucky my hair grows quickly.

I would recommend doing this herself, it seems like the stylist take most of the length off because they don’t know how to cut ur hair type, maybe it’s possible to get ur hair cut by someone who genuinely knows curly hair

I had the same hair dresser from when I was 3 till I got married at 19. I have yet to find a reliable salon that can cut curly hair. Ended up quitting a very promising salon as she switched to straight razoring hair & gave me 1/4" bangs after shrinkage!!!

Last time I got a haircut, my hairstylist actually started to cry and say she was sorry over and over because she ruined my hair. She claimed she was very new, which honestly with how bad it came out I don’t think that was an excuse to continue to cut after I asked her to stop. I literally had to convince my manager at work to let me wear a hat temporarily to hide it. My friend in hair school hooked me up with extensions because she’s an angel, I almost didn’t let her because I was afraid it would get worse, but I’m so glad I trusted her.
As a curly haired person too I can say that finding a stylist who knows how to work with curls is a daunting task.

I think so many relate, I went for a curly cut and my curls haven’t curled the same way or even curl at all since yet it doesn’t look good straight. Going to a highly skilled curl specialist idc what pays it’ll be worth having my hair back
Go to a black or some type of ethnic salon. They’ll do that hair easy and have it looking beautiful. I try to make sure my stylist either has my hair type themselves or plenty of examples of their work with hair like mine. I never cut straight because I wear curly the most. I can also cut my own hair curly but that’s not for everyone. I find it easy but It’s kind of an art to do on yourself 😊
Happened to me last week I have curly hair below my butt and I asked for a one inch trim and they cut off 9 inches!!!!! Completely heart broken so I feel u girl 💕

No bueno!! It really is hard as a hairdresser to give some clients what they want while also meeting their requirements. Sometimes people want a whole new look but then don’t want us to take any length off, which sometimes isn’t really possible! Definitely find a trustworthy stylist that works with lots of textured hair tho! That should help for next time 🥰 you’re still beautiful!
Finding a hairstylist is soo hard I have like frizzy curly and straight hair mixed and however short I want it all of a sudden poof half of my hairs gone!
In my 3c hair experience, a curly cut for volume is never the choice. You'll always end up crying. I havent got my hair cut professionally in over 2 yrs, and I haven't gone back bc I cut my hair better than any stylist ive had 💜💜💜
Omg that's horrible, I'm so sorry they did that to you *hugs* I've had so much hair trauma from people not listening to what I want or ignoring the reference photos I bring. It sucks because I have to remove my glasses and I'm legally blind without, so I can't see a thing they're doing. My hair isn't curly, but has a lot of texture and stretches when wet, so it always comes out too short.

Curly Girl here. I have only met one stylist in my life (and I’m over 60) who knew how to cut curly hair. If you ever find one that knows how keep them.
Curly hair salon or black hair salon that specializes in framing cuts. The mainstream or “trendy” salons, unless they have someone who specifically works on curls and they have a portfolio, rarely know how to handle curly hair. Lots of people dont learn in cosmo school how to handle anything beyond straight or mildly wavy hair.
It sounds weird but like my hair springs up drastically when cut but after like 3-5 days it kinda levels itself out and doesn’t look nearly as short. Also super short layers on top for shape are a must for me!
I've had so many people tell me that they don't think long curly hair is pretty. It's projection, everyone who has told me that either brushes the texture out of their own hair or straightens it everyday. I cut my own hair now, I don't let anyone near my hair because texturism is so common even amongst stylists.
These stories are the reason why I havent gone to the salon for over 6 years..my hair is so thick and long but im so scared. I camt find anyone herr in the hague.
Other curly girls are welcome to chime in here, but whenever i get a trim they cut my hair when it’s wet. Curls bounce, so just a half an inch can make a big difference. I am also trying to maintain my length, i just get rid of dead-ends and add some layers for shape/volume. I’m sorry you had this experience😔
It took me 18 years (my whole life) to find a hairdresser who said they specialize in curly cuts and actually new what they were doing.
Now I'm going into cosmetology school so I can help other people with curly hair.
Had the same situation 2 weeks ago. Asked for very soft and subtle layers only at the bottom and just a trim to cut off the broken ends cuz I'mtrying to grow my hair out. She cut off 10cm and gave me heavy af layers that look horrible if I don't style them, which I don't want to have to do every single day. That was the first time I cried after a haircut.
