    So play them on a modern stereo - they'll sound great ! And the light tone-arm, the record will appreciate.
    By the way, "His Master's Voice" was the dog listening to a recording of his DEAD master, who was lying in a closed coffin. The dog and the phonograph were both perched on the coffin llid ! Somebody said that the theme was macabre, so the coffin was left out of the final design.

    amazing how loud they are, but imagine playing an old record on an amplified modern player, it would be massively loud because its designed for smaller grooves unlike the oldies that had big grooves i imagine.

    Some of these Gramophones had no volume controls so turn it down you had to shove a sock in it.

    Ya, the needles actually do wear out after about 1-2 plays. I have heard something about you can substitute the needle with a cactus needle, however I'm not suggesting it...

    @jellybones423 No, the grooves are not wide enough and vinyl is too soft, that steel needle will go right through!

    old "gramophones" DO NOT play vinyl. They were made for the older 78 records. You would destroy the record if you tried to play it on one of those machines. Look for a modern turntable to play vinyl discs.

      These usually have a small lever for speed control, it shall be set to 78 rpm.
      Check it out.

      Neal Wilson Are you by any chance trying to play a Long Play on it, or a 45?

    • @TheWarflight
      @TheWarflight Před 9 lety

      Neal Wilson
      Okay,m here's what you need to do... you need to get a small screwdriver, and, depending on the model, there will be a small flat head screw either on the speed adjuster arm, or under the lid, where the arm touches the regulator... loosen the screw, adjust the part that touches the regulator, and readjust the arm back about a half inch... try that, and see if it works, as you may need to adjust it a bit more... don't forget to oil the part that touches the regulator any time you make an adjustment.
      If you have an Edison machine, well... Edison made his disks for 80RPM, and non-compatible for any other machine, and his machines non-compatible for any other company's records, because Edison was an evil tyrant, and hated his customers. I can't really help with an Edison machine.(never worked on one)

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine Před 9 lety

      Richard Lantz Probably you wouldn't be even able to play a normal record on an Edison at overspeed, since EDD's were vertically cut, and the machines had a tracking mechanism, meaning that any record with a different groove density of that of Edison's, would start skiping or repeating. At the begining various companies attempted to make their machines and records non compatible with other companies, but that method later became counterproductive, as many record companies started appearing everywhere, and people would choose machines that could play most of them. Many companies switched to massive use formats, except for Edison, who was very stubborn for that matter, and also resisted switching to electrical recording for two years (until '27). From that point, Edison machines were quite useless, and more expensive, however many of them had an outstanding quality, and even acoustic records had a very rich sound for what they were. The stylus that didn't need to be replaced was innovative aswell, as far as I know, Pathé was the only other big company featuring a stylus like this.

    @MichaelFearnleyBass Před 13 lety

    @shieldsguy Don't use one of these they'll destroy your shellac records (especially later ones). Buy a proper setup with a turntable that can do 78 rpm, a decent cartridge such as a shure SM78 and a flat level pre-amp. Steel needles will ruin your collection.

    Just to warn folks...this is a reproduction. The Victor Talking Machine Co., Camden, NJ never made HMV machines and certainly wouid never place a "Nipper" decal like this on the front. It would be a metal plate with Victor and the model no. and The Victor Talking Machine Co. etc. Don't be fooled.

    • @alistairsandilands1358
      @alistairsandilands1358 Před 7 lety

      Kraftpr,
      This is a British" His Master's Voice" gramophone NOT an American Victor. The decal is perfectly correct for HMV's of this period.
