I think people get confused when they hear Japanese metal and say "Why does it always have J-Pop elements" but if you listen to any western band with pop elements, they're always western pop elements. So the pop elements make sense culturally.

I’m old and I love Hanabie. The contrast in vocal styles makes the growls hit harder. In the context of the song it makes more sense as well. The gutturals are about having willpower and resisting urges for sweets, hence the contrast with the sugary pop vocal section. If you look carefully, Yukina never eats any of the sweets while the other band members do. Ultimately she overcomes temptation and crushes the cake.
Everyone can like or dislike whatever they want, I’m glad you took the time to check it out. Personally I don’t think musical maturity is only liking one style (especially the style popular in your youth) while disparaging others. I don’t want to be an Uncle Rico stuck in a time period (not that you are). I love GNR but I don’t expect every band I listen to to sound like them. I find Japanese music especially refreshing because they aren’t formulaic and they are adept at mixing up and combining genres in unique and interesting ways. To each his own. I gave you a thumbs up for sharing your opinion

There are a lot of things you have to get used to in order to begin to truly appreciate the music. This is coming from someone who go into the J-Rock scene several years ago. If you can't get past it, then there's no chance you'll ever come to enjoy it.

Chorus? Hanabie don’t usually do “chorus”, they do changes, except L.C.G. which you will hate. Irrationally. Let the Kawaii love flow into you, man.
As Christopher says below, there is a Crystal Lake tie up… Now, “juxtaposition” is a word you will hear a lot in the sphere of girl’s J-Metal. I’m 53, It TOTALLY works, it’s absolutely brilliant, the problem is you aren’t used to it at all, or you just hate puppies and kittens and kawaii. Do you hate puppies and kittens and Kawaii?
Their showpiece song is literally that, “Want to TIE-UP”, which layers Matsuri’s clean vocals with Yulina’s growls. It’s just excellent music. If you want more growls their latest sing “LOVE Rangu” or their album opener “Sunrise MISO Soup” are the way to go, but no MVs for them. They rap quite a lot - “Reiwa Matching Generation” is mostly rap - and it’s awesome.
Their album “Girl’s Reform Manifest” is my favorite from 2021 - it’s just an epic listen.
Now, where’s the reaction to the OG successful J-Metal band? Aldious are number one, even if they are having a LOVEBITES style extended vacation they are the best live girls metal band in Japan and you will like their lack of Kawaii and hate all three of their vocalists, even though R!N is an absolute world class talent in her own right… Aldious - If you don’t
Include them you haven’t got a full sample. Literally the OGs.

    Good reaction guys
I suggest you to listen to the song at least once more in your own time to find out that "WE LOVE SWEETS" doesn't have a chorus.
It seems like you expect from the bands you discover to sound like what you are use to hearing.
I discovered Japanese music scene 2 years ago and It's hard for me to listen to anything else now. And I'm not only talking about metal but also rock pop, jazz because they're often mix all genres together anyway.
I was bored listening to American metal with a few exceptions. Only some European bands and now Japanese are entertaining for me.
But I can understand that it doesn't "click" with you at first, you have to get use to it. And then, coming back from this rabbit hole is hard.

Not all Japanese bands are created equal. They blend genre's and world music quite well. This song is like 4 time signatures of Bad Ass covering about 5 styles of Hardcore easily. Remember these girls and many Japanese people have grown up on Anime more so than in the West. They literally have arcades and bookstores dedicated too these themes everywhere. I enjoy the Circus/Carnival aspect of the Shock and Awe in these new bands. Nobody in the West is even trying too do these things.

Music is like all art, one person's masterpiece is another person's splatter of paint. For me, this song landed on the masterpiece side of the spectrum the first time I saw the video. The first thing I thought was that these kids really love Maximum the Hormone because, to me, it was an excellent mashup of genres, along with a great sense of humor. Then I found out that they started in high school in 2015 as a Maximum the Hormone tribute band. I don't think the drummer is an original member but the other 3 have been together since it formed. They are now in the 22/23 year old range. Your interpretation is that the poppy parts of this song was to be like other bands. However, my interpretation is that they are actually poking fun at those bands. Babymetal's Gimme Chocolate is about loving sweets but worried about pesky weight gain. This song goes way beyond that, in a darkly humorous way, when they sing about gastrological distress and diabetes. In fact this whole song could be them poking fun at the Babymetal hit.

@@maxmaidiac2237 I don't think he is addicted to being abusive because I don't think he is trying to be abusive. He wants to be brutally honest and I respect that a great deal. This, however, is when an extreme narrowmindedness reared its ugly head. I look for three things in reactors. First, I want the person to have an actual musical background to bring some expertise to the reactions. He appears to have that background but it has yet to be really highlighted. I have been a lover of rock/metal for over 50 years but I am not a musician. I want to be educated but, so far, that has been lacking here. Second, I want honesty. This guy has honesty in spades. Third, I want someone that is open to expanding his or her musical horizons. If someone is only open to music that fits in their small musical box, the reactions will soon get predictable and boring. Unfortunately in this reaction he went from stubborn narrowmindedness to outright cluelessness. I don't mind comparisons with other bands. I do that too. But I never expected Hanabie to be compared with Demi Lovato. Demi Lovato?!?! That was totally bizarro. I had to rewind to make sure I was understanding it correctly. The creativity and humor of Hanabie went so far over his head that the reflexes of Drax would have been no help. Being a stick-in-the-mud is never good, but being a metal stick-in-the-mud is just plain sad.

Speaking of Crystal Lake, Gaku Taura(support drummer) is the music producer of these girls. Hanabie used to be a Maximum the Hormone cover band.
Hanabie is my top #1 Japanese right now, not because everything is great, it's because Yukina is the youngest girl growler with very low gutterals that I've ever heard. Like everything in their albums so far and singles.
If I have to be honest I really, really hate super growly bands like Merican deathcore and other metalcore out there. But there's only one exemption band that are good on deathcore and that is Deviloof. Hanabie girls are very young, they are still at college and have just released one album. They started as a cover band for Maximum the Hormone so it is not surprising their stuff is very crazy. I think they have interesting stuff coming for them because they are talented, but they have just started.
If they have songs where they don't do this...hmmm it is true that We Love Sweets it's their most gimmicky song, but you can clearly see what they do here. This is their style. I think their best song is Love Ranbu though; just recently released in spotify and I think they are still doing a music video for it.
On Babymetal...hmm, people might be becoming a bit insistent but it's because most of us were in the same stage at some point, at least the ones that come from a metal background. I never thought that it was shit when I first saw Gimme Chocolate, but I thought "lol the japanese are crazy" and continued doing something else. It was later watching *Road of Resistance* some time later that they started to grow on me. I still have doubts you will ever like them, because in the end is that, three girls dancing and one of them singing with high pitched voice to awesome metal music, but I would give them a chance to at least know who they really are. So that, *Road of Resistance* would be my recommendation.

With many Japanese bands, especially heavy metal or hard rock, they want to avoid the depressing death, oppressive doom feeling where the entire song is a suicide inspired downer re: German/ Russian heavy metal which I guess is what you seem to want to hear. 'We love sweets'. It's doing what they want in that you can't make sense initially of the heaviness of the beats, drumming and guitar, then the cuteness, screaming along with Jpop vocals with the theme of eating sweets all in less that 4 minutes. What is more surprising is that it works so damn well. It brings a smile to your face/maybe not your faces, but it makes you love the inspired non stop how many times can this band change up the beat and still make you head bang. Yeah you should just skip Japan and go on to another methodical, unimaginative, same old same old with 5 minute guitar solos and screaming and relentless gloom and doom lyrics about death and Satan and what have you. In this same vibe I suggest another girl band called Raise a Suilen, go and see the live performance of "Outsider Rodeo".

Well, I get your point and fighting about tastes makes no senses. So I will talk about *my* taste: Metallica let me more then once down. Starting with the black album and that crap with Load and Reload. There was a point in my live where I stopped listening to metal at all for 15 years. I came back to metal because of one of these newer metal bands started to mix things up and I liked it. I discovered Hanabie some days ago. Despite I don't like everything; there is more light than shadow. There is no doubt that these girls incredibly talented and show a lot of variety in their songs, what I heard so far.

Metallica lost me after the Black album too. I've kept up with metal since then, and there have been some bands that kept me engaged like Pantera, Disturbed, Killswitch Engage and Slipknot. Then I went back to the rock format with bands like Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown and Evans Blue. But ultimately, I'm a metalhead. So we searched out more metal and Japan has an abundance of it these days.

A little history!! The reason you even know there are Japanese Rock/Metal bands is Babymetal. In 2014 they performed at the Sonnisphere festival in England, conquering an audience of 55,000 in 30 minutes. Second was Band Maid with their MV "Thrill", getting 2 millions views in 2 weeks. Both have been touring the world ever since in sold-out venues. Band Maid will be touring the US in October (13 cities) with all venues sold-out!! Nemophila on 1 July performed at the Whiskey a Go Go, sell-out.
As to musicians, the difference in Japanese bands is everyone is talented and professional. No drunks or dope heads. Most westerners will name A western musician as an example leaving the rest of the band out. The depth of talent is the difference.
    Enjoy yourselves, Bye!
